Chapter 3: Chapter 3: The Beast’s Roar
The beast roared, shaking the very air around us. But I stood firm, shadows curling at my feet. The Grand Line was a place for the strong, and I was going to become its darkest force yet.
The beast's roar sent a shockwave through the beach, its guttural growl rattling my bones. My shadow soldier stood at attention, unwavering despite the creature's size. I was still getting used to the idea that I could command the dead, but I didn't have time to sit and reflect on that. Not now.
The System pinged again.
New Quest: Defend yourself.
Objective: Defeat the beast.Reward: 100 XP, Random Weapon Drop.
"Right," I muttered, squaring my stance. "This thing's no Sea King, but it looks like it could tear me apart if I screw up."
The beast charged, its massive, lumbering body cutting through the sand like a ship in full sail. Its jagged claws dug deep into the beach as it ran, eyes locked onto me with primal fury. I barely had time to think before it was upon me.
Move!
I threw myself to the side, feeling the rush of air as its claws swiped at where I'd been standing moments ago. The ground shook under its weight as it skidded to a stop, kicking up a cloud of sand.
The pirate shadow stood its ground, and I saw an opportunity. "Attack!"
Without hesitation, my shadow soldier lunged at the beast's flank. Its blade, though rusty in life, was now a weapon forged in darkness, cutting through the air with deadly precision. The shadow drove the sword deep into the creature's side, causing it to bellow in pain.
The monster swiped at the shadow with a mighty claw, but it passed through like smoke. My summoned minion couldn't be touched. It was invincible in this world, just like the system promised.
I grinned, adrenaline pounding in my veins. "Perfect."
I could win this. I would win this.
Taking a deep breath, I focused on the notifications in my vision. I had leveled up my Dagger Mastery, and I was going to make use of it. I didn't have a proper weapon yet, but I'd learned in my first fight that I didn't need one to win.
While the shadow soldier kept the beast distracted, I sprinted forward, darting around its massive bulk. It was wounded now, thanks to the pirate's relentless assault, and I wasn't going to give it time to recover.
I reached down, grabbing a sharp piece of driftwood from the shore. It wasn't much, but it would do for now. Charging toward the beast's exposed side, I drove the jagged wood into its bleeding wound, twisting it hard.
The beast let out a deafening roar, thrashing wildly. But I didn't stop. I jabbed again and again, driving the makeshift weapon deeper until the creature's roars became labored, pained. It was weakening.
Critical Hit!
"Come on!" I shouted, more to myself than anything. My blood was boiling, my muscles screaming in protest, but I couldn't let up. Not now.
The beast staggered, collapsing onto the sand. It let out one last bellow before falling still, its breath ragged and fading.
I stepped back, gasping for air, my heart pounding so loud I could barely hear anything else. My shadow soldier stood beside the fallen creature, its sword still ready, as if waiting for the next command.
Then, the System chimed again.
Quest Complete: Defeat the beast.
Reward: 100 XP, Random Weapon Drop.
Level Up!
You are now Level 2.
A rush of energy surged through me. My exhaustion melted away, replaced by a strange, invigorating force. I could feel myself getting stronger. Every movement was smoother, sharper. My body was adapting, growing to meet the challenges this world threw at me.
But then, something caught my eye. The beast's corpse began to shift, its body dissolving into a thick, inky shadow. The dark essence flowed toward me, swirling at my feet, waiting for my command.
I hesitated for a second, then extended my hand. "Rise."
Just like with the pirate, the shadows obeyed. The beast's form began to materialize again, only this time, it was under my control. The massive creature stood before me, but now its eyes were hollow voids, just like the pirate's.
Shadow Soldier Summoned: Shadow Beast (Lv. 2)
I stared up at the towering beast in awe. This was mine. I controlled it now. A smirk crept across my face. With a creature like this under my command, the possibilities were endless.
But before I could revel in my victory, the System interrupted me with another notification.
New Quest: Survive the Pirate Attack.
Objective: Defeat the pirate crew approaching the island.Reward: 200 XP, Weapon Upgrade.
I turned sharply, my eyes narrowing as I spotted the telltale black sails of a pirate ship on the horizon. It was headed straight for the beach, and I could already make out the figures aboard, armed to the teeth and itching for a fight.
"Of course," I muttered. "Because one fight isn't enough for today."
I didn't have time to dwell on it. I needed to get ready, and fast. My shadow beast let out a low growl, as if sensing the approaching danger. The pirate shadow stood at attention, waiting for orders.
"Alright," I said, rolling my shoulders. "If they want a fight, we'll give them one."
I scanned the beach, looking for anything I could use. There wasn't much, just wreckage, driftwood, and some half-buried barrels. But I had something far more valuable: shadows. My shadows.
I raised my hand, my voice low and steady. "Prepare for battle."
The shadow beast growled again, and my pirate shadow unsheathed its sword. I could feel the tension in the air, the calm before the storm. This was going to be my first real test, a crew of armed pirates against me and my growing army of darkness.
But I wasn't afraid. Not anymore.
The System had made me stronger. Faster. Deadlier.
And if these pirates thought they could take me down?
They were about to learn just how wrong they were.
