Morning light crept through the half-drawn curtains.
Golden rays filtered into the villa main bedroom, soft and warm, stretching across tangled sheets and bare skin. The ocean breeze rustled lightly in the distance,
Arthur Blackwynd opened his eyes.
For a moment, he didn't move. The stillness was rare, almost alien to him. He lay there in the center of the wide bed, staring at the ceiling in quiet thought. Warmth pressed into him from both sides comforting, alive, and undeniably real.
To his right, Raven lay curled across his chest, her body rising and falling with a slow, steady rhythm. The strands of her hair splayed across his skin, and her face usually shrouded in distant calm now looked completely at peace. One of her hands still rested gently over his heart, as if afraid he might disappear if she let go.
To his left, Kara was sprawled like she'd fought a war in her sleep one leg hooked over Arthur's, the other tossed somewhere across the bed. Her blonde hair was a mess, falling over her eyes and into her mouth, and the corner of her lip twitched occasionally like she was dreaming about punching someone or flying through stars. Her head was pressed into the pillow, her breathing light and untroubled.
Arthur exhaled slowly.
"I should feel drained after a night like that.." he murmured to himself, voice low, roughened by sleep. "But I'm not.. Benefits of longevity.."
There was no fatigue in his body, no weariness in his bones. Instead, there was a deep-seated calm like his soul had been submerged in something warm and still. He let his hand drift through Raven's hair, brushing it back gently. His fingers traced the curve of her cheek, the quiet beauty of her expression, and he leaned in to place a soft kiss on the side of her face.
She murmured something unintelligible and shifted closer into him, nuzzling his chest.
He smiled, just faintly. And there was something behind that smile… something bittersweet.
"Life would be good, if we can continue like this.." he said under his breath, "if this was a truly peaceful universe. But peace here is only ever a pause between storms."
With practiced care, Arthur gently slid Raven off his chest and onto the pillow, ensuring her hand didn't fall too hard as it slipped away from him. She murmured again, but didn't wake.
Kara grunted in her sleep, one arm flailing over to claim the space he vacated, only to flop lazily over Raven instead. Her leg stayed hooked in the air for a moment before it crashed down. She snored once softly.
Arthur chuckled.
Pulling on a pair of black lounge pants, he padded quietly toward the balcony windows. The beach was quiet.
And there still, unmoving was Doom.
The monstrous shadow stood in the sand, statuesque and imposing, arms crossed.
Arthur leaned his forearm against the glass and smiled.
"I really made them sleep on the beach," he said, voice amused. "Poor bastards."
He glanced back.
Kara had now flopped entirely across Raven, her blonde hair tangled with violet, both of them tangled with the sheets. The sight made something stir in his chest, not lust, it felt more like gratitude… and something he didn't think he would feel anymore.. A sense of worry for someone else.
Because this, this sliver of happiness might not last for long. He looked back to the sky. The sun was rising. But so were the stakes. He knew what kind of threats are out there in the universe.
He stood there a moment longer, the light on his face, taking in the warmth of morning. Then he exhaled softly and turned away from the sight, whispering to himself, "It really is a weakness… having people you care about."
The words were a truth and a curse.
Arthur quietly stepped out of the room, careful not to wake either of them. He walked into the villa's main space, the air cooler here, more awake. Shadows pooled at his feet naturally, drawn to his presence, and one of them rose silently Galatea.
She stood with militant elegance, arms behind her back, violet eyes glowing, Arthur pulled out a simple black backpack. Not much inside just what he needed for this trip.
He fastened it over his shoulder and without turning said, "I want you stationed with Blade and Kaisel, they are protecting my family. Stay with them just in case."
Galatea bowed her head once, then without a word, she stepped into a balcony and shot skyward like a spear of black light cutting through clouds, vanishing in a blink with a sonic boom. The villa windows rattled.
Arthur stood still, but he felt the change behind him.
Slim arms slipped around his torso from behind, bare and warm. Kara's breath brushed against his back as she leaned into him, resting her head gently between his shoulder blades.
"Where do you think you're leaving to?" she murmured, voice still heavy with sleep.
Arthur smiled faintly. "Oh. You're awake."
"You didn't really think I'd sleep through you sneaking off like some broody assassin?"
"I've been called worse I guess," he muttered. "Didn't want to wake you."
"You didn't. I was pretending to be asleep."
"I figured," he admitted, his hand briefly brushing hers where they were clasped over his abdomen.
She squeezed him a little tighter. "Do you really need to go talk to the glowing green guys? I was starting to having actual fun here..."
Arthur chuckled. "They're actually more blue, but yeah. I need to hear what they have to say. Guardians don't usually send invitations, they could be right, they could be wrong, I don't know."
Kara sighed. "Fine… I won't stop you."
He turned his head slightly, glancing down at her arms, still wrapped around him. "Sure. But… are you really okay walking around naked like this? You do realize the others could show up at any second? I already called back Doom."
Kara smirked against his skin. "Please. I'm faster than anyone on this island."
She let him go and vanished in a blur of motion, wind rushing through the room, and then reappeared directly in front of him, arms crossed under her chest, mischief glinting in her sky-blue eyes. Her hair was wild. Her smile was wilder.
"And where is my damn kiss?"
Arthur blinked, half laughing. "I see what this is about then... Raven.."
"I'm owed a goodbye," she said, stepping closer until their chests nearly touched. "And don't even think about cheating me with a forehead tap."
He gave her a slow, knowing smile. "Fine. Gotta make it fair, I guess."
His hand slid up her waist to the curve of her jaw, tilting her face toward his. Their lips met not a chaste parting, but heat and hunger bottled into a kiss.
Kara melted into him, one hand sliding to the back of his neck, breath catching as his mouth moved over hers with command and tenderness in equal measure. Her back arched just slightly, like she needed more, needed all of him again, clearly one night wasn't enough for her.
When they finally parted, her eyes fluttered open slowly half-lidded, dazed, and glowing.
Arthur touched her bottom lip with his thumb and whispered, "I gotta go now."
She nodded, still catching her breath.
He stepped back, then, with deliberate slowness, he slid the violet-and-black Shadow Corps ring onto his finger.
The moment it clicked into place, reality warped.
A portal of swirling dark shadow and obsidian energy tore open before him, a silent maw of energy. Wind pulled at his form as violet sparks shimmered at the edges.
Arthur looked back at her one last time, eyes locking with hers.
Then he stepped through gone in an instant.
Only the lingering scent of him, the whisper of his magic and energy, and the last swirling remnants of his portal remained.
Kara stood alone in the silent room, still nude and kissed breathless, staring at the place he vanished.
"Be safe," she whispered again, softer this time.
Her hand pressed to her chest, right over her heart, and for a moment… she just listened.
silence… for a few precious seconds.
Crunch.
Her ears twitched.
Footsteps.
Voices.
"Dude, who moved my towel?!"
"I swear, if someone messed with my snacks, I'm burning this place down, I don't care if it's Arthur!"
"Why do I taste sand in my mouth... terrible idea to sleep outside, Damn you DOOMSDAY!"
Kara blinked once processing the sound of the others notably Jaime and Gar slowly returning to the villa from wherever they'd passed out the night before.
"shit." she muttered.
Her eyes went wide as saucers. She looked down at herself. And just like that a blur of motion and golden hair zipped from the spot like a lightning bolt struck sideways. Kara rocketed back up the room the door slammed shut behind her like a thunderclap. Sheets flew in every direction as she dove back onto the bed, arms and legs scrambling like a spider trying to look natural. She flipped onto her side, fluffed her hair out over the pillow, pulled the blanket over her chest, closed one eye halfway… then paused.
"…Nailed it."
She smirked. A small one. Just for herself.
Raven stirred slightly on the bed beside her, and Kara instantly froze.
Raven mumbled, "…if you keep breathing that loud I'm going to hex your lungs."
