Scholar of Strawhat Pirates

Chapter 2: Chapter 2: Tony Tony Chopper

As years passed by, Douglas became engrossed in experimenting with different chemicals that Kureha taught him how to make. Despite knowing everything from the books, he didn't have the practical experience to back it up. Kureha assisted him in learning how to extract chemicals from the plants that he would find.

Kureha was deeply shocked when she saw that Douglas had already learned everything from the books, as she had first intended to make Douglas read every book that she had. But then, when Douglas informed her that he had already "read" the books, she quizzed him, and he passed perfectly. So Kureha then brought him in for practical practices.

Of course, Douglas did not only focus on one subject, as he studied engineering as well. And, of course, he did not neglect to train his own body; he wanted to be able to protect himself against strong opponents. So, every day, he would climb the highest Drum Rock point, as he knew that there were lower oxygen levels there, and start his training regimen, using the training method of Rock Lee.

Every day, he would push himself to the brink of exhaustion. He would also practice kicking and punching with each of his limbs more than ten thousand times a day—something that built his body. After a year of training like this, his body adapted, as he could feel that there was no progress anymore. But he persisted and added intensity to his training—the push-ups became burpees, planks, one-hand vertical push-ups, and many more. He also started kicking and punching a rock, copying the routine that Garp did since he was a teenager, and passed on to his disciples.

After three more years of training like this, his body developed even faster, as Douglas created a drug that would accelerate his muscle healing. He added more and more training to his routine and even started practicing his Observation Haki for a year now, as he was always wearing a bandana over his eyes. He would also close his eyes and fight and hunt more and more animals, managing to unlock his Observation Haki.

One day, as he was hunting, he came across a herd of reindeer that were fighting, which was not something rare. But the enemy of the reindeer that was fighting was standing on his two feet, which indicated something to Douglas. Then the reindeer started talking, which made Douglas know what was happening, as he displayed a huge smile on his face.

"What an incredible creature. A talking reindeer is something that I would not expect to see in these parts of the mountain," Douglas said as he walked toward Chopper and his enemy. When Chopper heard Douglas, he immediately went on guard, as he thought that Douglas would hurt him. But when he looked, he just saw a tall child looking at him without any hatred, but with a smile—something that Chopper had only seen with Hiriluk.

"Say, do you need help?" Douglas then asked, as he could see that Chopper was badly injured and his antlers were even breaking. The reindeer that was fighting Chopper suddenly attacked Douglas without any thought, but Douglas punched him in the head, which immediately made the reindeer faint.

Seeing this, Chopper was shocked, as he thought that the child was just some weak human. But here, he defeated the enemy that he struggled to defeat. Suddenly, he broke out of his stupor, as Chopper was eager to take the mushroom that he thought would cure Dr. Hiriluk. He went toward the bushes and started collecting one of the mushrooms.

But before Chopper could walk away, Douglas stopped him, which made Chopper afraid. He had not had the best time with any humans and thought that Douglas would be the same.

"Please, don't hurt me. I'm just going to give this cure to my father. He is incredibly sick, and this is the thing that could cure him." Chopper, who was scared, managed to scramble these words out of his mouth.

"This would not cure your father. It is a poisonous mushroom that would kill him. Don't you know that?" Douglas said, as he knew from the original story and the books of Dr. Kureha, about the Amiudake mushroom.

"You are lying! Doctor said that this symbol means vitality," Chopper said, as he insisted that this would be the cure.

"I think he means the symbol of the pirates, as they represent the strong ones that travel the sea," Douglas said, which made Chopper hesitate for a moment. But among his hesitation, Douglas saw something from the bush where the mushroom was located—it was a fruit that had strange patterns within, something that he knew very well—a Devil Fruit.

Douglas took it immediately and lifted Chopper, with both of them in his arms, while Douglas kicked the reindeer that Chopper fought away, harboring a deep resentment toward the animal responsible for the suffering of one of his favorite characters in One Piece.

"Where are you taking me? Please don't cook me," Chopper said, as he became scared once again.

"Don't worry. I'll just treat your wounds so you can be presentable when you come back home. You don't want your father to worry about you, do you?" Douglas said, which made Chopper nod.

After a few minutes of walking, they arrived at the cabin of Kureha, which made Chopper surprised, as the cabin was incredibly near his home. But it became a surprise that he had not yet seen it in all his life. Inside, Kureha was drinking alcohol as she was waiting for Douglas to come home from his hunt. When Douglas came in, she became excited, as she thought that Douglas already had what she would cook.

"Is that our dinner, Douglas?" Kureha asked as Douglas put Chopper on the table.

"AHHHH!!! PLEASE DON'T EAT ME! I HAVEN'T SAID GOODBYE TO DOCTOR HIRILUK YET!" Chopper shouted as he panicked. But Kureha also became shocked by the scene, as the reindeer she just saw was talking.

Douglas then started treating Chopper's wounds while also answering Kureha's questions about Chopper. After a few minutes of treating, Douglas managed to heal Chopper easily.

"Thank you," Chopper said shyly to Douglas.

"No worries about it. If you want to learn how to treat people, just come here. Doctor Kureha here would teach you," Douglas said, as he presented Kureha as a teacher for becoming a doctor, something that Kureha did not appreciate, which led to shouting at Douglas. Chopper, who was just watching, was surprised, as he did not think that a human could be capable of having the same relationship as he had with Doctor Hiriluk. Despite being yelled at, Douglas was just smiling. Kureha then turned her head toward Chopper.

"What's your name, brat?" Doctor Kureha asked.

"Tony Tony Chopper," Chopper answered almost immediately.

"Huh? Tony Chopper??" Kureha said.

"No, Tony Tony Chopper. That's my name," Chopper said once again, clarifying to Kureha. He was then given by Douglas a medicine that he invented that would help Chopper recover from his blood loss. Chopper then thanked him and started walking back toward their house, leaving Douglas and Kureha alone.

"Doctor, I found this earlier," Douglas said as he presented the Devil Fruit to Kureha, which surprised her, as she had not seen a Devil Fruit for a long time. This made Kureha curious about the abilities of the Devil Fruit, as she took out her available encyclopedia about Devil Fruits—something that Douglas touched, as he wanted to know the contents of the book.

The name of the Devil Fruit was then revealed, as it was the Buru Buru no Mi, or Assemble Assemble Fruit, which allows the user to disassemble and assemble anything that they touch.
