Rise Of The Unworthy Trillionaire Son-in-law

Chapter 10: Runaway Husband

Back in the city of New York, minutes turned into hours and hours turned into days, but Evelyn hadn't set her eyes on the man she called her husband—not since her birthday party. She lay on her bed wondering where he was. Her mother wouldn't tell her the truth, no matter how persistent she was.

"I don't know the whereabouts of that scumbag!" were the words that flew from her mother's mouth anytime she dared to ask about Ethan. She was slowly losing her mind; his absence ached her badly. She wasn't herself anymore. She knew something wasn't right. She had called his number countless times, but it was switched off. It was as if he never existed. The maids and guards spoke nothing about his whereabouts.

In utter confusion, she marched to her mother, who relaxed peacefully in the living room, sipping her wine with delight, savoring the taste so well while Evelyn simply stood there, staring at her face like a ghost.

"What is it, daughter? You haven't been yourself for days and you haven't had any rest either. What is the matter with you? In a few days' time you will be having a gig, you need all the rest you can get," Mrs. Judith expressed her displeasure.

"Enough of these games, Mother. Where's Ethan?!" she screamed, her voice bouncing off the walls. Mrs. Judith turned around, paying close attention to the maids who never dared to look her in the eye.

"Leave us, all of you!" Judith ordered at once, watching as the maids left quickly.

"Don't even dare to lie to me again! I have had enough of this nonsense! I demand to know the whereabouts of my husband!" Evelyn thundered, her voice louder.

"Why don't you call him? If he truly cares for your feelings, he will answer the damn phone, won't he?" Judith mocked as she raised her glass for another sip, but before the wine could touch her mouth, Evelyn knocked off the glass cup. She watched as it shattered to pieces, creating a mess.

"Have you gone mad, Evelyn!? What the fuck is wrong with you?" Judith screamed, almost raising her hand to slap her daughter.

"Give me the answers I need! I know very well that you know something I don't. Ethan can't just disappear in one night. What did you do to him? Tell me, Mother!"

"Behave yourself, Evelyn. You're spiraling out of control. Mr. David Sinclair will be joining us for lunch this afternoon and I want you to be in your best character. So enough with your tantrums and get your head straight!" Judith revealed.

"I don't give two fucks about the Sinclairs. Where is my husband, Mother?!" Evelyn thundered, her eyes filled with rage.

Mrs. Judith took some steps closer to her daughter, their eyes staring at each other's faces, but a guard quickly broke the silence in an instant.

"You have a visitor, Ma'am!" his voice sliced through their silence war.

"How dare you interrupt us!" Judith screamed.

"I didn't mean to, my lady. You have a—"

"You can interrupt as long as you have information regarding my husband. Speak without fear! I won't let my mother harm you, not under my watch!" Evelyn revealed while her mother watched in disbelief and anger.

"I believe he meant to inform you both about my presence in your humble abode," a familiar manly voice called out from the entrance as all eyes turned at once. It was no other person than the devil himself—David Sinclair.

"You may leave us, guard. I believe I need no introduction at this point. I'm well known," David muttered with a smile etched on his lips as he took some slow and deliberate steps forward.

"My darling woman, it's a pleasure to see your beautiful face. You shine like the morning star," Mr. Sinclair added as he carefully caressed her cheek, but Evelyn knocked off his hand in a heartbeat.

"And what are you doing here, Mr. Sinclair? I appreciate your gift at my birthday, but I believe our friendship hasn't gotten to this point, has it?" Evelyn asked coldly.

Mr. Sinclair was stunned but quickly hid behind a faint smile as his eyes slowly turned to Mrs. Judith, who felt uneasy.

"You haven't told her, have you?" he asked, his voice calm, sharp, and cold.

"Tell me what? What the hell is going on, Mother? Spill the truth! Where's Ethan, and what haven't you told me?" Evelyn screamed, her voice nearly bringing down the roof.

"Ethan is gone for good. He doesn't wish to continue with the marriage," Mrs. Judith finally voiced out with a sigh.

"What do you mean?" Evelyn asked in utter confusion.

"Ethan has betrayed you. He has left you in suspense and fled off in the dead of night like the fool he has always been!" David added, pausing to catch his breath and create more tension.

"None of this makes sense in any way!" Evelyn protested.

"It doesn't, my dear daughter, and I was stunned too. But Ethan brought a document to me in the dead of night after your birthday celebration. It was a divorce paper of which he had already signed. He revealed with his mouth that he couldn't continue with you anymore. Ethan made his choice despite my pleas. I apologized and tried to make peace with him for the sake of your happiness, but his mind was made up," Mrs. Judith revealed as she went to the shelf to pull out the documents. Evelyn read everything word for word as tears slowly gathered in her eyes. She couldn't believe any of it was real.

"No, this can't be. He made love to me, Mother. I held him in my arms that night. He was so good in bed—that night was the best sexual pleasure I had in a long time. Ethan wouldn't do this to me!" Evelyn revealed as tears streamed down her face, her hands shook in fear.

"Ethan also blackmailed us. He took pictures of you naked that night and threatened to expose them anonymously on the internet if we didn't pay him ten million dollars. Mr. Sinclair here was the only one who helped me settle off the payment in cryptocurrency. Ethan was the devil no one saw coming," Mrs. Judith added with a faint smile etched on her lips as she watched her daughter sob uncontrollably.

"I don't believe any of this! I have to find Ethan. There must be an explanation for all of this. I know the man I married, Mother!" Evelyn screamed through tears.

"I'm afraid you won't find him—not in this world, not in the next one. Ethan is gone for good and he can never come back!" David Sinclair thundered as his eyes held unspoken words of nothing but pure evil.

He walked slowly toward Evelyn, lowering his voice as his cold fingers traced the edge of her arm.

"You deserve better, Evelyn. Someone who understands your body, your mind, your fire," he whispered darkly. "You gave your heart to a ghost, but I am flesh, real and powerful."

She took a step back, trembling with tears in her eyes.

"Stay away from me!" she warned.

But he smiled and leaned in, brushing a lock of hair from her cheek.

"Soon," he said in a voice laced with promise and threat, "you'll realize that I'm a more better and suitable man for you than that worthless bastard, I should be your king, not Ethan"

Evelyn stared into his eyes, cold, merciless, and terrifyingly certain.

And somewhere deep inside her heart, she knew the real nightmare was only just beginning.
