Chapter 4: Chapter 4 : White lotus
"Oh my! So bright!"
I can see, oh my goodness, I can actually see. The light is so bright that it's making me tear up but I don't mind. I can also talk and move my body…
I'm so happy but tears keep rolling down my eyes. What if this is a dream and I'm really dead? I pinched myself.
"No, not dead. Ow"
My gaze scanned my surroundings, I was in my room lying on my bed but why was I in bed when it was so bright outside?
Slowly but steadily I sat up and felt my face and arms.
"I'm really alive… wait, what if everything was a horrible nightmare and it never happened. I mean, that's more believable than actually being reborn"
I stared down at myself and I was instantly alarmed. "What the hell?!
Wait a minute… I think I remember the day when I had puke all over my body. The thought alone made me shiver but I had to recall it for clarity.
The night before was a fine evening and I remember being super excited because Regulus asked to have dinner with me and everyone else included in the round table. This was a rare occurrence so I anticipated it with great joy, I even rehearsed how I would act so I wouldn't make a fool of myself or upset anyone but boy, who was I kidding?!
The dinner had barely begun after serving the dishes and I started to throw up like crazy. I couldn't even hold it in because it came gushing out through my nose and mouth. It was a horrendous sight to behold indeed.
I was already familiar with the servant's antics but I never thought they'd be brazen enough to pull such a stunt in front of everyone!
Then again, when they have the backing of Carla and Beatrice, why wouldn't they be so audacious?
I remember struggling helplessly, hoping that even one of them would be kind enough to pass me a handkerchief or something! Anything would have freaking done the trick! But I got the shock of my life when Regulus got up with a face full of disgust and gross irritation.
He didn't say anything but his eyes were flaring with enough words as he stormed out and that was all the cue everyone else needed to leave one after the other, but even if no one said anything, you could count on Harry to leave a comment.
"Are you that thirsty for validation? Congratulations, you won the spotlight" He sneered and walked away, and soon after the round table was left empty.
'Validation?' I found this word rather paradoxical. Who cares about their approval when I was practically fighting for my life?!
I fell off the chair and was gagging from difficulty breathing and that's when a maid walked by. My consciousness was hanging by a thread but I still remember seeing her slip a pill into my mouth and force water down my throat.
Was that the antidote? Ah… back then I didn't understand why they saved me, I could've died that night and no one would give a hoot but now it all makes sense.
Carla needed me alive to take her place in marrying Mr. Mallow.
What a shame, I was left to drown in my own vomit. I wasn't even giving a change of clothes!
So here I was again, I was sent back to the next morning. That means it's exactly three months before I get married to Mr. Mallow and if my calculations are right, the door to my room should open in; 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…
"Louis Spencer is here to see you"
No knocking, no formal greeting and no title. I was addressed like a common person, she didn't even bother to say my name and just shut the door behind her. Not a single thing has changed, everything's just how I remember it to be.
It's that feeling of leaving your house for a trip and returning to see everything in place. It's usually a good feeling but not this time.
Dread ran down my spine just from the thought of reliving those moments again, not in a coma but the real deal! I can't let that happen. Never!
I can't repeat my cursed story, I can't return to that comatose state. No…
"What do I do?" I paced around my room and the words of the maid echoed in my head. That's right, I almost forgot that Louis was here to see me.
In my previous life, I was busy getting freshened up to remove the stench of vomit and by the time I got down he was pretty occupied with Carla, they were having a blast conversation so I didn't intrude.
It's clear now that she was the one he came to see in the first place so why bother dressing up?
I walked right to the door and flung it open. If I must change my fate, if I must make sure never to walk the same steps that lead me to my death, then I must start the change now!
I must, f*ck everyone up! I must screw them over, one by one!
"Lyla… wh-what happened to you?"
Even though he acted concerned, he kept his distance. This only shows how fake his words really are.
"What do you mean? I've never felt better!" I flashed a smile and I could tell he was momentarily dazed. The Lyla of before didn't even arch her lips in comparison, seeing a full-blown smile from me must be stupefying.
"What brings you here, Louis? Are you here to do the formal engagement?" I purposely looked over his shoulders as though I was searching for company.
"Oh, I came alone. About that, Lyla… didn't Sir Regulus tell you anything?"
He must mean the breaking news of the marriage. Regulus would've indeed told me last night if not for the unfortunate incident.
"What do you mean?" I feigned ignorance and as expected he couldn't bring himself to spill it. "It's nothing" He cowardly replied.
"… Don't you feel uncomfortable? I wanted us to take a walk but I think you should get changed first"
To be honest, I would prefer breakfast. I can't tell if it's because I was in a coma before I got here or it's because I was poisoned and didn't eat anything for dinner, but my stomach was killing me right now.
"I'm fine" I replied and his brows knitted putting me under scrutiny.
"Are you sure you're okay, you seem… different" He said finally.
Who could be the same after dying and coming back three months prior? But honestly, couldn't I have gotten more time? I'm not trying to be ungrateful or anything but, three months is a bit strained!
Lyla, you're up"
Carla's voice pierced through my thoughts and what a pair to see right after getting reborn. The betrayer and the pretentious b*tch. Very convenient!
"Clearly" I replied with a shrug and she laughed my words off.
"What's going on with you, Lyla? Why do you look so unkempt? Don't the maids serve you to overcome your shortcomings?… Anyone there!"
She called out to the maids and I pretended not to know the implied meaning of her words. For short, I don't know how to take care of myself so I rely solely on the maids to even change my clothes. Well said Carla but two can play the mind games you so desire.
I will no longer suck up this injustice, so bring it on, let me show you how it's done!
