Chapter 23: Chapter 23: Fortune Teller
My heart was thumping against my chest, the only reason I was this jittery was because I had to be the winner.
I mean, that's how it always goes in movies. How else would he fall in love with me if I didn't win and steal the show?!
The tense air was choking and everyone stood on edge to hear the announcement. Dare I say I even held my breath!
"And the winner is… Miss Laura who was also last year's Festival Ambassador. She performed the Buchaechum (Fan dance) that perfectly portrays East-Asia culture but this is not to say other contestants didn't excel in their respective cultural dance so don't take it the wrong way"
A scoff escaped my lips, why did I think for a second that luck was on my side?
This is the part where I roll back into my anti-social shell and wallow in self-pity but I can't even do that! I still have a part to play.
After all, I'm supposed to be the lively dead ex of Mr. Sebastian!
I felt a tap on my shoulder and I stared up at Suzy.
"S.L: You're my winner. I don't care what anyone says. You are the prettiest"
I chuckled unintentionally, she was so cute it's hard to believe she's real sometimes but it's even harder to believe she suffers from trauma. My smile stiffened when I met Sebastian's gaze. He must want to gloat now that I lost but I'm not in the mood for that.
I instantly put on a bright smile and pointed to a corner
"Over there! Let's try that hotdog stand, I really love hotdogs!" I didn't wait for a reply and carried Suzy along. Anywhere she went Sebastian would follow suit so this was perfect. Well, it would've been, except for the fact that I hate hotdogs!
"I'll have three!" I enthusiastically raised my fingers while eagerly staring at the grilling pan. The light from the stand was golden and bright so I took the opportunity to smile charmingly while staring at Sebastian.
"I want this and this" I said to the middle aged woman who seemed extremely excited to have us there.
"Young love is so precious my dear" She smiled and turned her attention to Sebastian "Don't let her go, having a woman that brings joy to your life is a blessing, keep her safe… hmm?"
Sebastian stayed silent like the emotionless 6'4 statue he was so I had to receive the advice in his stead and shortly after she handed me the hotdogs.
"Give it a try" I pitched it to him and I knew he was going to refuse so I quickly added. "Just try it and see, if you leave my hand hanging I'll cry so hard. I already lost the dance competition so I have a reason to cry, do you want to see me cry?" I feigned puppy eyes and Suzy was the first to reply by shaking her head.
That's all the motivation needed for Sebastian to take it from my hand and take a bite.
"How is it?" I inched closer with widened eyes.
"Not bad"
Was I making progress or not?! Reading this man is harder than reading for my college exams!
"Next up, the Fortune Teller! Let's check it out pretty pleaseeeee…" It sounded like I was begging but I already dragged Suzy along for my endeavors.
"Please take off your shoes" The person by the door said and I felt a headache coming. Sebastian would never agree to that! Not even in a million years!
So I had to play a card that I'd rather not have played.
"Come in right away"
Sebastian caught up with us and we took our seats across from the Seer.
She did her abnormal routine and asked us to pick a card. I didn't hesitate to pick mine but Sebastian, on the other hand, looked forced to be here!
"I'll start from you gentleman" She collected his card and smiled coyly. "You have strong love in your past but I see an even stronger bond ahead and it all starts from tonight's festival"
He didn't look convinced as he listened but that's not what's important. The words have been said so his mind would subconsciously register it.
That's right, I paid her to say those exact words. There's no way I'm leaving my life in luck's hands again!
"You! My child… have unsettled business. I see a cloud that prevents you from leaving. You must finish up here!"
Her words left me terrified, mine wasn't part of the plan. I never asked her to and she said such disturbing things!
My palms were sweating and my face was no different from a pale sheet of paper.
"We're leaving"
Sebastian suddenly said and dragged me by the wrist while he held Suzy with his other hand.
Oh shit! For a second I got carried away by my problems, I don't think he noticed, I sincerely hope not.
We were out on the street and Sebastian started questioning me. My heart jumped from anxiety every time he spoke.
"What are you doing? You're acting strange, what's your aim? What do you plan to gain from this?"
I think I finally got the answer to my question. I wasn't making any progress with this iceberg! He only sees my actions as suspicious.
I don't know whether to cry or laugh but I knew I couldn't give up.
At that moment a lantern floated in the sky and got my attention.
"Oh look! A lantern" I talked with my head up, using this as an opportunity to escape his questions as I walked forward.
"Watch out!" Sebastian suddenly yelled and when I looked it was already too late, a moving bicycle was heading towards me and I could do nothing but squint my eyes reflexively while waiting for the impact but a minute passed and I opened one of my eyes than the other to see Sebastian shielding me with his body.
"You're so clumsy" He said and my breath hitched. He was so close to my face!

I darted my gaze away and suddenly voiced "Where is Suzy?"
[Oh no!]
