Chapter 22: Chapter 22: Dancing Competition
Flower blooms only to wither and the autumn leaves testified to that as the evening breeze rustled the trees until they gave away their flaky petals.
This was my view of the festival and I was still thanking my lucky stars my plan worked.
When Sebastian arrived, I brought Suzy before him to use the new signs I taught her but I was shocked to see an enthusiastic expression while she happily signed these words.
"S.L: Uncle, can we go see the lanterns at tonight's festival?"
Sebastian turned to me and I interpreted it but I was shocked when he responded.
"Are you sure you aren't the one who wants to see the lanterns?"
I felt exposed and my pitch immediately increased "It's Suzy!…" but then I realized that was way out of the character I was playing so I mellowed down and added.
"Well, I also want to see the lanterns… I'll go get Suzy dressed"
Some time passed and here we were in the bustling streets filled with shining lights and different shop stands, heavily decorated all over the streets.
[It's show time, isn't it?]
You got that right! I can't believe I'm about to go full-blown crazy by inhabiting the personality of another person like I'm some bipolar maniac but that seems to be the case!
Now that I know his 'little flower' was a sweet summer child, I have to make some changes to my attitude.
Although, I'm not quite sure why Helen described her as a joyful girl when Sebastian only sees her in me when I cry and get all puffy.
It's hard to tell, was she a sad or a happy child?! It's killing me!
[There's only one way to find out!]
Indeed there is. I held Suzy's wrist closer and turned my attention to Sebastian who had his eyes glued to his phone.
What the hell? Was he working right now?
Just then an announcer's voice sounded
"Anyone else cares to join the dancing competition?"
I suddenly raised my hand and waved frantically.
"Ho oh! We have one more over there! The floor is all yours!"
I looked again and Sebastian had a weird expression. Tonight he was decked in something casual but it was more than enough to make heads turn effortlessly and now my actions have put us on the spot.
"What are you doing?" His stern voice rang out and I placed Suzy's hand in his.
"What do you think? I'm obviously going to dance and have fun. Don't forget to cheer me up, otherwise, you all bear my shame" I said with a subtle threat and lowered my figure to Suzy's level.
"You'll cheer for me, won't you?"
She nodded and I instantly felt a boost of confidence. I can totally do this!
I stepped on the dance floor and the announcer's voice rang again.
"The winner of the dance competition will be crowned The festival's Dance Ambassador, with a fancy meal voucher, exclusive access to a scenic spot, and lastly a mysterious gift box! So do your best! Last year's Ambassador has wowed the crowd again tonight, do you have what it takes, Miss?"
How the hell was I supposed to know that? I didn't even know it was this serious! I also didn't watch any of the performances, how do I know the strengths of my opponents?! This is insane! But guess who's crazy for a certain man's attention? This girl!
I looked ahead in the crowd and saw Suzy making a series of signs for me. Sebastian carried her in his arms which also means he wasn't working anymore.
"S.L: I'm cheering for you. You can do it. I know you will win. I'm your secret admirer!"
The last one made me chuckle. I feel kinda guilty for deceiving her on that but it felt good to know I had someone on my side.
"I'm ready" I said to the instrumentalist which I whispered to a second ago.
The moment the music started, it was like the world faded into a single heartbeat, mine! The sharp clack of my little heels against the wooden stage echoed through the festival, and I felt every eye turn toward me. Good. That was the point!
My arms rose instinctively, slicing through the air with precision, my fingers curling as though drawing invisible threads of fire. My hips swayed with the rhythm while my body translated the melody into motion.
The power in my steps growing with every stomp. Each clap of my hands, each snap of my fingers, demanded attention, and I could feel it, I had them. All of them. How could I not, when I was performing the famous Flamenco dance?!
I spun, my skirt whipping around me, and when I stopped, my gaze found him. Sebastian. His face was unreadable, but he wasn't looking away. Not this time.
The guitar quickened, and so did I, my feet pounding against the platform in a blur of sound and fury. My pulse raced to mix with my pounding heartbeat and eyes rested on him with every chance I got.
My breaths came in sharp bursts, but I didn't let up. I could hear the crowd's roaring sip into my focus, their cheers vibrating in my chest, but I didn't care about them. Sebastian is all that matters.
Whatever he thought of my spontaneous performance was all that freaking mattered! I'm only glad my years of being cooked up in my room weren't for naught. My dream was to be an actress so I took it upon myself to learn as many skills as possible, from diverse cultures!
So I'm not surprised the crowd is going berserk from witnessing a passionate Spanish dance with intricate footwork and dramatic hand movements.
It would interest them to know that they're my first-ever audience. Except the three moves I displayed to Sebastian count!
The final beat came, and I stopped abruptly, my arms raised, my chest heaving. For a moment, there was silence. Pure, stunned silence. Then the applause hit, loud and wild, but I only had eyes for Sebastian and we locked eyes over the distance as if we were trapped in a magnetic field - at least that's how it felt to me. It was only when Suzy waved and signaled to be put down that our gaze broke.
She ran straight into my arms on stage and the roses being thrown at me rested on her too.
"S.L: That was amazing! Can you teach me how to dance like that? You looked so pretty dancing…"
I noticed her hand movements pause and she looked back at Sebastian before continuing.
"S.L: Uncle was completely smitten by you. I think he likes you"
I couldn't help bursting into laughter, she sure was smart but I don't think it would be that easy. If anything he was stunned to realize I know how to dance after telling me off the other day. Humph!
"We will announce the winner of this year's Festival Dance Competition! This year's competition is extremely exciting and I must add, a hard pick. But nevertheless, a winner must be crowned…"
"And the winner is!…."
