Revenge Heiress: Bow To My Reborn

Chapter 16: Chapter 16: Little Flower

The chill air from the open sky disappeared the minute we stepped into the cooly-lit room. Even the very air screamed of a dignified ambiance, with classical music softly playing in the background. Mr and Mrs. Cornelius were already seated at the table.

Is it just the both of them tonight? I thought they had a…

"My pretty goddaughter is around! I missed you!" Mrs. Cornelius stated with excitement and Suzy ran ahead of us to give her a hug. "You've only been gone a day and it feels like forever"

Oh, so when Sebastian said Suzy wasn't going to be around for three days he meant she was with his parents. If so, their relationship might not be as bad as it seems, right?

From my findings, Mr. Cornelius' name is Anthony while Mrs. Cornelius' is called Helen. Even though I knew this, I don't think it's wise to call them by their names. I'm smart enough to know the relationship between them and Sebastian is very strained and the only reason he brought me here tonight is to piss them off!

So let the show begin!

I took a bow and greeted them following Sebastian's lead and he did the gentlemanly thing by pulling my chair out before taking his. Suzy suddenly ran over and sat by my other hand which was the farthest away from everyone else because Sebastian was closest to his Father, Anthony.

I noticed Helen sign to Suzy, I was slightly surprised to see that she knew sign language but I have bigger fish to fry.

Our dishes have just been served and with the indifferent gaze that was being cast on me, you'd think I was an uninvited guest. Technically speaking, they don't want me here! Too bad they just have to get used to my face because I need their son for a bit longer!

Still, the table rested in deafening silence, only the sound of cutlery casually filled the air and the only person I pitied was Suzy.

I am far too used to being ignored in a family dinner so this was par for the course for me.

"Suzy, open up" I made a 'ah' sound and spoon-fed her. I'm well aware that she could feed herself but indulging her is better than leaving the poor kid feeling invisible and I was right. Her face instantly lit up and she eagerly waited for another spoon, and another one.

I was so engrossed in my act that I forgot to eat anything and it was only when I felt a tap that I snapped back to reality.

The truth was, I saw myself in Suzy and I wished someone would've indulged me while I was only a child seated at the table, maybe I wouldn't have turned out to be such an unlucky person.

"You haven't touched your food," He said to me in a low voice, even though I'm pretty sure everyone heard him. As I said, the place was pretty quiet.

I was just about to reply when Helen finally spoke with her mouth instead of the sharp gaze of her eyes. I would be honest, I never expected her words. In fact, the spoon I raised to my mouth hung mid-air!

"I see you haven't changed a bit, Sebastian. You still have the same taste in women. Caring, soft, adorning and most of all a breed that was always cheerful as if the wickedness of the world were oblivious to them"

She ended with a smile, a fake smile if I must add. I lowered my spoon back to my plate. She was referring to his dead ex-girlfriend! All my attempts to get any information about her were unsuccessful and here she was giving a vivid description of her attributes!

"Watch your mouth…" Sebastian forced out through clenched teeth and even I who sat beside him couldn't help creating some distance. He could be really terrifying sometimes! Still, Helen didn't seem fazed, heck! She strengthened her stance!

"Am I wrong? You brought a duller version but nothing's changed. This one is only more reserved but they're both the same all together… " She took a dramatic pause and I just had to take a minute of silence for myself who was referred to as 'This one'

"… Don't you agree? -"

"She has a name! It's Lyla" I shuddered, Sebastian's husky voice rang out again, his restrain was evident in his tone but Helen refused to give up. Honestly, I wanted to hear more about his dead ex, any information would be much appreciated so I kept my ears peeled to fill my jar of curiosity.

"Of course, she does, just like your little flower had a name, but somehow you managed to keep it hidden even if it meant inviting all those who found out to an early grave!"

"Helen!"

"Enough!" Mr. Cornelius' voice echoed in the room while his cutlery made a loud 'clack!' and I found myself covering Suzy's ears. Her distressed expression pierced my heart.

Did Helen make that up? I felt my skin crawl just by thinking of the possibility. Did Sebastian really kill people just to hide her identity? That's next-level craziness! But a thought remained in my head. Was Helen really his mother? Anyone who understands the situation could see the innuendo, her tone and method of speech were as sharp as a knife.

"You seem to have lost your mind, Sebastian. All because of a woman!"

I was instantly put in the spotlight. How I wish their words were true but it's all a lie!…

This man doesn't give a hoot about me.

"Yes, I've lost my mind because of a woman so give up your ambition of securing that alliance"

The tension in the air tripled, and swallowing food has never been more difficult. I quickly grabbed a cup of water and as if Mr. Cornelius was diligently waiting for that moment, he asked me a question that sent the entire liquid in my mouth flying.

"Lyla, do you love Sebastian?"

It was not my intention but I broke into a coughing fit. Thankfully, Suzy was quick to pass me a napkin and save me some face. His question was reasonable but it felt like my plans were exposed. It was probably a result of a guilty conscience but I couldn't bring myself to answer it.

Was this what Sebastian meant when he warned me about unsettling questions?

"I'll make it easy for you" Mr. Cornelius spoke again. "Tell me about your love story with my son. How did you get to meet and fall in love? Just do me this favor. See it as feeding an old man's curiosity"

[Oh boy!]

My brain went completely blank and at that moment the sound of heels clacking against the marble flooring filled my ears. It got closer and closer until it revealed a young lady seemingly about my age.

"Sorry, I'm late, Dad, Mom. Hope you won't hold it against me?"

Sebastian's sister!

I knew someone was missing! How could I forget the princess of the Cornelius Family? Who also happens to be Harry's all-time crush!

After the royal family, the Princess of the Cornelius family was esteemed next in line, and let's just say, her behavior is definitely something I need to worry about!
