Chapter 3: Chapter 3: Professor Wang's Warning

Chen Hao had been up all night, his eyes bloodshot.

The lights in the laboratory were still glaring.

He wearily rubbed his temples, trying to sort out a glimmer of thought from his chaotic mind.

The impact of the mysterious signals, the intervention of the national security department, and the rumours spreading on the Internet all put unprecedented pressure on him.

Just then, the door of the laboratory was gently pushed open, and Professor Wang walked in.

He also looked haggard, with worry and fatigue in his eyes.

Seeing Chen Hao in such a state, Professor Wang let out a soft sigh.

"Chen Hao, you should take a rest."

Professor Wang said softly.

Chen Hao shook his head with a bitter smile.

"Professor Wang, how can I rest at a time like this? The secrets of these signals haven't been unravelled yet, and there are so many things waiting for us to do."

Professor Wang walked up to Chen Hao and patted him on the shoulder.

"I know you're anxious, but overexertion is not conducive to research. Besides, there are some things we need to talk about seriously."

Chen Hao looked up at Professor Wang.

From his eyes, Chen Hao sensed that something more important was about to happen.

The two went to a corner of the observatory.

It was far from the hustle and bustle of the laboratory, and only the faint sound of instruments operating in the distance could be heard.

"Chen Hao, do you know why I came to you in such a hurry?"

Professor Wang asked.

Chen Hao shook his head.

"Professor Wang, I've been wondering. You said the government discovered some signs several years ago. What exactly were those signs?"

Professor Wang was silent for a moment as if considering how to start.

"This matter dates back a long time ago," he said slowly.

"Before you joined the National Astronomical Observatory, we had already noticed some abnormal astronomical phenomena. At first, these phenomena were not conspicuous, just some minor cosmic fluctuations. We thought they were instrument errors or normal cosmic activities. But as time went by, these abnormal phenomena became more and more frequent and obvious."

Chen Hao listened intently.

He had never imagined that so many unknown things had happened before he participated in the research.

"Later, through more advanced observation equipment and technology, we found that these abnormal phenomena seemed to point to a terrifying result."

Professor Wang's voice became low and heavy.

"The Earth may be facing an unprecedented disaster."

Chen Hao's heart tightened.

Although he had made some speculations through the signals before, hearing it directly from Professor Wang still shocked him.

"What kind of disaster is it? Is it an asteroid impact or something else?"

Chen Hao asked eagerly.

Professor Wang shook his head.

"We're not sure yet. But from the information we have so far, the scale and impact of this disaster will be global, and it may even threaten the survival of the entire human race. Moreover, we've found that there seems to be some intricate connection between these abnormal phenomena and this set of mysterious signals."

Chen Hao recalled the part of the signal content he had deciphered.

Although it was just fragments, it did convey an ominous premonition.

"Professor Wang, then what should we do now? What exactly is the government doing?"

"The government has been secretly organizing scientific research forces to conduct research, trying to find a solution to the problem," Professor Wang said.

"However, this problem is much more complex than we thought. We not only have to face the threat of an unknown disaster but also consider social stability and public sentiment. Once the news leaks and causes social panic, the consequences will be disastrous."

Chen Hao nodded.

He understood the government's concerns.

But he was more eager to make the truth public so that people could prepare in advance.

"Professor Wang, but we can't keep hiding this forever. If a disaster is coming, the public has the right to know the truth."

"I understand your thoughts, Chen Hao," Professor Wang said.

"But before we find a practical solution, revealing the truth rashly will only make the situation worse. Moreover, this matter has gone beyond the control of researchers. The government has its considerations and decisions."

Chen Hao felt a bit helpless.

But he also knew that Professor Wang was right.

He looked at the night sky in the distance, filled with confusion and bewilderment.

"Professor Wang, apart from telling me this, is there anything else you came to talk to me about?"

Professor Wang hesitated for a moment and then said,

"Chen Hao, I hope you act with caution. There may be some unknown forces and conspiracies behind this matter. If you find any abnormal situations during the process of studying the signals, you must tell me immediately."

Chen Hao was slightly taken aback. He didn't expect Professor Wang to say such a thing.

"Unknown forces and conspiracies? Professor Wang, do you know something?"

Professor Wang didn't answer Chen Hao's question directly but said,

"Some things can't be told to you yet. Just remember, you must protect yourself and the research results. This set of signals may be the key to understanding this disaster and the only hope for us to find a solution."

Chen Hao looked at Professor Wang's serious expression.

He vaguely felt that this matter was even more complex and dangerous than he had imagined.

He nodded.

"I understand, Professor Wang. I'll be careful."

Returning to the laboratory from the corner of the observatory, Chen Hao's mood remained unsettled for a long time.

He knew that he had been caught up in a huge storm, and at the centre of this storm was that set of mysterious signals.

In the following days, Chen Hao and his team continued to plunge into intense research work.

They kept trying various methods, attempting to unlock more secrets in the signals.

However, every attempt was accompanied by failure.

The signals seemed to be shrouded in a thick fog, preventing them from seeing its true face.

At the same time, rumours about the mysterious signals on the Internet were multiplying, with all kinds of speculations and false information spreading everywhere.

Although the government and the scientific community were doing their best to refute the rumours, the public's emotions had already started to become unstable.

In some places, there were even small-scale riots. People began to hoard daily necessities, filled with fear and unease about the future.

Internationally, the relationships between countries had become delicate due to this set of mysterious signals.

Some countries started to secretly strengthen their military forces and stockpile strategic materials as if preparing for the upcoming unknown disaster.

While some other countries were calling for international cooperation to jointly address this global crisis.

Chen Hao looked at his busy colleagues in the laboratory, filled with worry.

He knew that time was running out.

If they couldn't crack the secrets of the signals and find a way to deal with the disaster as soon as possible, the future of humanity would be full of uncertainties.

One night, Chen Hao went alone to the rooftop of the observatory.

He looked at the vast starry sky, lost in thought.

In this boundless universe, the Earth was just a tiny blue planet.

Yet it carried the hopes of countless lives.

He wondered if the impending disaster would destroy all of this.

"Chen Hao?"

A familiar voice came from behind.

Chen Hao turned around and saw Lin Yun.

She was holding two cups of coffee in her hands.

She walked up to Chen Hao and handed one of the cups to him.

"Thank you."

Chen Hao took the coffee and took a small sip.

"I've been worried about you seeing how hard you've been working recently," Lin Yun said, her eyes full of concern.

Chen Hao smiled.

"I'm fine. I can handle it. It's just that this matter is too important, and I don't want to let everyone down."

Lin Yun nodded.

"I know. I've been following your research. Although I'm a biologist, I'm also interested in astronomy. I was thinking, could these signals have any connection with the biological field?"

Chen Hao's heart skipped a beat upon hearing this.

He had always been studying the signals from the perspectives of astronomy and physics.

He had never thought of looking for a breakthrough in the biological field.

"What you said reminds me. Maybe we can analyze it from different disciplinary perspectives. Perhaps we can find new clues."

Lin Yun smiled.

"That's good. I believe that as long as we work together, we will find a solution to the problem."

Chen Hao looked at Lin Yun's determined eyes, and a warm feeling welled up in his heart.

At this moment full of crisis, having someone by his side to support him made him feel extremely comforted.

The two stood quietly on the rooftop, looking at the starry sky.

Both were looking forward to the answer that could solve all the mysteries appearing as soon as possible...
