Chapter 4: Chapter 4: The Sealed - off Truth
The conversation with Lin Yun on the rooftop brought new inspiration to Chen Hao.
After returning to the laboratory, he immediately summoned the team members and proposed studying the mysterious signals from an interdisciplinary perspective.
Everyone readily agreed.
A new research upsurge thus began.
When Lin Yun, a biologist, joined the research team, she revitalized the whole team.
Relying on her professional knowledge in the biological field, she tried to find similarities between the characteristics of signals, such as waveform and frequency, the genetic code of organisms, and the ways of life information transmission.
On the other hand, Chen Hao led his colleagues in astronomy and physics to continue delving into aspects such as the origin and propagation path of the signals.
However, just as they were fully immersed in the research, the pressure from the outside world was increasing.
The supervision of the national security department became increasingly strict.
Every research progress needed to be reported in detail.
This made Chen Hao and his team members feel restricted.
"Dr. Chen, this is the summary of the latest research data. Please take a look," a young researcher handed a document to Chen Hao.
Chen Hao took the document, skimmed through it quickly, and slightly frowned.
"Although these data show some progress, it's far from enough. We must speed up and find more breakthrough points."
"But, Dr. Chen," the researcher said helplessly, "our research is now subject to too many restrictions. Many experiments can't be carried out as we want. And time is running out."
Chen Hao sighed. Of course, he knew these problems.
"I'll try to communicate with the higher-ups. Everyone, keep working hard. Don't slack off."
At the same time, the government was also closely monitoring the research progress.
In a secret conference room, of government officials and experts were discussing countermeasures.
"At present, there are more and more unstable factors in society, and the public's panic is constantly spreading," an official said worriedly.
"We must give the public an explanation as soon as possible, or the consequences will be disastrous."
"But the research progress is slow, and there's nothing we can do about it," a scientific research expert shook his head helplessly.
"The encryption method of those signals is too complex, and the scientists have done their best."
"Isn't there any other way?"
another official asked.
"We can't keep dragging this on. We must take some measures."
At this time, an old man who had been silent all along spoke up.
"I think we can appropriately release some research progress, and let the public know that we're working hard to solve the problem. This might ease their panic to some extent."
"But, won't this cause even greater chaos?" someone objected.
"We can release information selectively, only disclose what won't cause panic," the old man said.
"At the same time, strengthen the control of online public opinion to prevent rumours from spreading further."
After intense discussion, the government finally decided to adopt the old man's suggestion.
However, Chen Hao and his team were unaware of the government's decision.
They were still working day and night in the laboratory, trying to uncover the truth behind the signals.
One day, when Chen Hao was sorting out data in his office, he suddenly received a strange call.
"Hello, is this Dr. Chen Hao?" a deep voice came from the other end of the phone.
"This is me. Who is this?"
Chen Hao asked warily.
"Who I am is not important. What's important is that I know something about those mysterious signals you might be interested in." the other person said mysteriously.
Chen Hao's heart skipped a beat. "What do you know?"
"I can't talk about it on the phone. We need to meet in person," the other person said.
"Tomorrow night at eight o'clock, by the lake in the City Park. I'll be waiting for you. Remember, don't tell anyone."
Before Chen Hao could respond, the other person hung up the phone.
Chen Hao put down the phone, filled with doubts.
Who was this mysterious person?
Why did he know about the signals?
And what was his purpose?
Chen Hao hesitated for a long time but decided to keep the appointment.
He knew it might be a risky move.
But for the sake of uncovering the secrets of the signals, he was willing to take a chance.
The next night, Chen Hao arrived at the City Park early.
The lakeside was quiet, with only the gentle breeze blowing across the lake, creating ripples.
Chen Hao checked the time. It was still a few minutes until eight.
He warily observed the surrounding environment, feeling a faint sense of unease.
At exactly eight o'clock, a figure slowly emerged from the darkness.
Chen Hao took a closer look. It was a man wearing a hat and a mask, and his face couldn't be seen clearly.
"Are you Chen Hao?" the man walked up to Chen Hao and asked in a low voice.
Chen Hao nodded.
"I am. You said you knew something about the mysterious signals. What is it?"
The man looked around to make sure no one was around, then lowered his voice and said, "I can tell you that there's a huge conspiracy behind these signals. The government knew the meaning of the signals a long time ago, but they've been hiding the truth."
Chen Hao was shocked.
"Is what you said true? Why would the government do this?"
"Because they're afraid of causing social panic and, even more so, losing control of the situation," the man said.
"And some forces are manipulating all of this behind the scenes. They don't want the truth to be revealed."
"What forces?"
Chen Hao pressed.
The man shook his head.
"I can't say too much. All I can tell you is to be careful. Your research has touched the interests of some people, and they won't let you go easily."
After saying that, the man turned to leave.
Chen Hao quickly stepped forward to stop him.
"Wait a minute. What evidence do you have for what you said? Who are you exactly?"
The man stopped, turned his head, and glanced at Chen Hao.
"I'll find a way to give you the evidence. As for who I am, you don't need to know for now. Remember, don't trust anyone and protect yourself."
After saying that, the man quickly disappeared into the darkness.
Chen Hao stood there, his mind in turmoil.
The words of this mysterious person made him more suspicious of the government's actions.
Could the government be hiding something?
Then what was the point of all the efforts he had made?
When he got home, Chen Hao lay on the bed, tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep.
Every word the mysterious person said kept replaying in his mind.
He was filled with contradictions and struggles.
He didn't know who to trust or what to do.
The next day, Chen Hao came to the laboratory as usual.
He tried to put aside what happened last night and fully immerse himself in the research.
However, he just couldn't concentrate.
"Chen Hao, what's wrong with you?"
Lin Yun noticed Chen Hao's strangeness and asked with concern.
Chen Hao shook his head. "It's nothing. Maybe I'm just too tired recently."
Lin Yun looked at Chen Hao, her eyes full of worry.
"Don't push yourself too hard. If you're not feeling well, take a rest."
Chen Hao smiled. "Thank you, Lin Yun. I'm fine. I'll adjust myself."
Just then, Chen Hao's phone suddenly received a text message.
He opened it and saw that it was from an unknown number.
There was only one sentence: "The evidence is in the archives of the observatory. Find it yourself."
Chen Hao's heart tightened.
He knew this might be the evidence the mysterious person mentioned.
After a moment of hesitation, he decided to go to the archives.
Chen Hao came to the archives of the observatory.
This place stored years of research materials and data.
He searched around, hoping to find evidence related to the mysterious signals.
Finally, in a corner, Chen Hao found a locked filing cabinet.
He tried several times but couldn't open it.
Then he suddenly remembered that he had seen a master key at Professor Wang's place.
Maybe he could use it to open this filing cabinet.
Chen Hao went to Professor Wang's office. Professor Wang was there.
"Professor Wang, I'd like to borrow your master key. There's a filing cabinet in the archives that I can't open," Chen Hao said.
Professor Wang was slightly taken aback. "The filing cabinet in the archives? What file are you looking for?"
Chen Hao hesitated for a moment. "I... I want to find some early research materials on the mysterious signals. It might be helpful for our research."
Professor Wang looked at Chen Hao, a hint of doubt in his eyes.
But he still took out the master key from the drawer and handed it to Chen Hao.
"Go ahead. Remember to return it after you're done."
Chen Hao took the key and returned to the archives.
He opened the filing cabinet. Inside were some documents and materials.
He flipped through them carefully.
Suddenly, a document caught his attention.
This was an early research report on the mysterious signals.
The content on it shocked Chen Hao.
The report showed that the government had conducted in-depth research on this set of signals years ago and deciphered most of the content.
And the results they deciphered were far more terrifying than what Chen Hao and his team knew...
