Chapter 83: Clash of Wills
The stadium was packed, buzzing with excitement as Ray Virel stepped onto the battlefield. Yet his mind wasn't on the crowd—it was on Donovan Lux.
Opposite him, Donovan smirked arrogantly, the glint in his eyes sharp and venomous. "I heard your bird had a little accident," he said casually, arms crossed. "Shame. I was looking forward to seeing it struggle."
Ray's jaw clenched. The words, the tone... It was too precise, too timely. Could Donovan have orchestrated the ambush?
"You…" Ray muttered, narrowing his eyes.
"Hmm?" Donovan leaned in mockingly. "Something wrong?"
Ray said nothing. He couldn't lose focus. Not now.
The announcer's voice echoed:"Match start! First round: Dragonair vs. Hydreigon!"
Ray inhaled sharply. Donovan was opening with his ace.
Hydreigon appeared in a flash of crimson light—massive, brutal, and snarling with three heads. Its sheer presence made the crowd fall silent.
Ray's hand trembled slightly as he pointed forward. "Dragonair, let's show them your heart!"
The serpentine Dragonair coiled gracefully onto the field, elegant but outmatched in size and weight. Ray knew Hydreigon was a powerhouse. The system confirmed it:
Hydreigon (♂) – Level 45 – Aptitude: Light Purple
Dragonair (♀) – Level 39 – Aptitude: Core Purple
Ray clenched his fists. "Let's play smart. This won't be a test of power—it'll be a battle of will and control."
The battle began.
Hydreigon roared and launched a savage Dark Pulse, but Dragonair danced aside with grace. Ray countered with tactical strikes—coil-enhanced slams, speed bursts, and precision attacks. Dragonair's agility was her edge.
But brute strength didn't play fair.
Hydreigon began overwhelming her with a relentless barrage of Dragon Breath and Crunch, scoring painful hits. With each blow, Dragonair's movements slowed, her breathing grew ragged.
"She's just a serpent," Donovan sneered. "You're wasting time. Give up, boy."
Ray's mind raced. He saw it clearly: Dragonair was losing.
But she didn't fall.
Instead, Dragonair's eyes met Ray's. For a brief moment, he saw the reflection of all they'd endured—the forest, her birth, her mother's sacrifice. Pidgeotto's wounded wing. His promise.
"Don't hold back," Ray whispered. "You've already come so far."
Donovan, irritated, commanded the finishing blow:"End this. Draco Meteor."
The sky darkened as searing meteors plummeted toward the field.
"Now!" Ray cried. "Channel it—dodge and strike with everything!"
Dragonair's body shimmered, glowing with latent power. She wasn't just moving—she was flying, twisting through the blasts with a furious elegance.
The system chimed:
[Notice: Dragonair has reached Level 40]
Ray's eyes widened. "It's now or never!"
Charged with new strength, Dragonair soared high, electricity crackling through her form. She roared and released a blinding beam:
"Hyper Beam!"
Hydreigon reacted just a second too late—its own Hyper Beam roared upward at the same time.
The two titanic forces collided mid-air in a flash that consumed the arena in light.
An explosion.
The dust settled slowly.
Both Pokémon lay still.
Silence.
The announcer hesitated before finally declaring:"Double KO!"
Ray fell to his knees, tears clinging to his lashes. "You did amazing… thank you, Dragonair."
Medics rushed in to tend to the Pokémon. Donovan looked annoyed—but not surprised. For him, Dragonair had simply removed one obstacle.
Ray stood slowly, wiping his eyes.
"One down," he whispered. "Let's see what you've got next, Donovan."
