Chapter 6: Chapter 6: Ermengarde, Possessor of World-Shocking Wisdom
After leaving his own territory, Lucifer took on the duty of guiding Ermengarde, who was unfamiliar with the route, towards the palace of Kazdel.
The most headache-inducing thing was that Lucifer, a man with the title of Prince, didn't even have a royal chariot or any vehicle whatsoever. Every time he left his mansion, he was forced to tread upon this land with his own two feet.
Although he could have created numerous blood avatars to carry him forward like the Blood Demon Overlord, Lucifer was concerned that the horrifying flesh-and-blood masses, which could destroy the sanity of any who saw them, would terrify the innocent Ermengarde and other passersby.
The only fortunate thing was that the current inhabited land of Kazdel was smaller than Lucifer had imagined. Even without any vehicle, walking from one end of the border to the other took less than a day.
"Kazdel has changed so much. It's completely different from what my teacher told me."
Ermengarde, who followed behind Lucifer, her reluctant guide, acted like a student full of curiosity. She had a great deal of interest in her own "homeland" as a Sarkaz. So much so that she didn't even think of using the unique "Cube" of the Liches for travel, but instead strolled along, admiring the scenery at a leisurely pace.
"That pair of twin siblings is truly making Kazdel progress."
Although Lucifer didn't know the fine details of how Teresa and Tracy planned and executed their work, the calls of the Sarkaz people grew louder every day, to the point where even the Blood Demon Overlord and those old geezers could no longer ignore them.
Even though the Sarkaz still faced problems with food, housing, travel, and medicine, a moment of peace was already a wish they could barely hope to grasp.
Lucifer paid no mind to that. He simply led Ermengarde slowly away from the common thoroughfares, heading towards the palace of Kazdel.
"Hmm... it's smaller than I thought."
"Your emotional intelligence is even lower than my blood pressure."
Hearing Ermengarde's critique, Lucifer almost blacked out.
This young lady truly had no sense of time or place. If these words were to leak to the ears of some extremist guards, or a Kazdel nationalist godfather like the Blood Demon Overlord, not even he could get Ermengarde out of trouble.
"Eh?"
But what Ermengarde said wasn't entirely baseless. To call it a palace wasn't quite right. It was merely a base of operations that Teresa and Tracy had hired a few Arts mages to hastily renovate. To call it a government department would still be considered too shabby. But this place was indeed the true representative of the Demon King and the Royal Court.
"Prince Lucifer!"
The guard on duty today happened to be a Blood Demon, so he greeted Lucifer enthusiastically.
"Mm... this is a special envoy sent by the Liches. I'm taking her to see the Demon King, Teresa."
"Hello~"
It seemed Lucifer's actions had set a good example. Ermengarde was no longer so afraid of the Blood Demon race and even dared to initiate interaction.
"Yes, sir! Please, both of you, enter!"
The guard then made way for the two of them.
Walking down the palace corridor, a playful Ermengarde began to tease.
"It seems the social interactions of you Blood Demons aren't as terrible as outsiders claim. That Blood Demon just now seemed to respect you a lot?"
"Don't jump to conclusions. That's just me... and only with some particularly strange groups."
Hearing this, Lucifer immediately corrected Ermengarde, telling her that the outside rumors had actually beautified the image of the Blood Demons a great deal (sarcasm).
Under the "excellent" rule of the Blood Demon Overlord, the Blood Demons were probably the clan most skilled in conflict and strife among all Sarkaz. The Blood Demon Princes, in particular, were the very embodiment of the word "chaos."
Lucifer, who only stood out because everyone else was worse, was likely the most empathetic Blood Demon there was. Many weak and common Blood Demons wanted to seek refuge with him, but unfortunately, Lucifer had no intention of taking on servants or subordinates.
"Uh... in that case, you really are an anomaly, aren't you?"
Ermengarde clearly didn't realize just how "emotionally intelligent" her own words were. Fortunately, Lucifer was quite used to her world-shocking wisdom by now.
"I also find it hard to imagine that the linguistic arts of the Liches could be this advanced. Please, tell me you're the only one who's like this?"
"What are you talking about! My talent is so great that even my teacher has praised it! Among the Liches of my generation, I am the most outstanding!"
"Never mind then... I respect that."
Faced with Ermengarde's unsurprising answer, Lucifer chose to accept and honor it. But Lucifer didn't dislike the atmosphere of being with Ermengarde; on the contrary, he enjoyed the feeling. It was like how he had grown accustomed to bickering with Warfarin in the past. Being able to talk and joke with the person beside him was a very happy thing.
However, Lucifer thought back... according to Ermengarde, it seemed she was the most outstanding of the new generation of Liches? If nothing went wrong... when Fleamont, the current Lord of the Lich Royal Court, retired, the next lord would probably be Ermengarde?
"It's over... the Lich Royal Court is probably doomed."
"What did you say?"
Ermengarde, who was admiring the interior decoration of the palace, didn't hear Lucifer's disparaging remark.
"Nothing. We---hmm?"
Just as Lucifer was about to change the subject, he came face to face with an old acquaintance.
"Lucifer. And... hmm? The aura on you? A Lich?"
The newcomer was not tall, with green hair and emerald eyes, but it was difficult to clearly distinguish their gender from their face and voice. They looked at Lucifer first, then shifted their gaze to Ermengarde behind him and immediately guessed her identity. It was just that their pair of emerald eyes always seemed devoid of interest, as if they were indifferent to everything.
"Are you also here to attend the meeting, Slime?"
"..."
"Slime?"
The Shapeshifter chose to ignore the first half of Lucifer's sentence, but his nickname for them seemed to pique their interest a little.
"Is that what you call me? Do as you please. As for the meeting, I've already told Teresa our thoughts."
It was clear the Shapeshifter had no desire to sit rotting in a meeting room.
"Do you have any other interesting suggestions? We are getting bored."
The Shapeshifter had spent a long time in history studying various interesting things, but most of them either grew tiresome quickly or failed to hold their interest at all. Only Lucifer's out-of-the-box thinking could provide them with many feasible suggestions, such as trying delicacies from all over.
"Try reading some novels from the younger generation. I guarantee you'll be entertained."
"Novels, you say?... Very well, I'll keep that in mind."
The Shapeshifter nodded in satisfaction, then walked past Lucifer and Ermengarde as if in a hurry to go collect modern novels.
With the Shapeshifter's "three-noes" personality (no mouth, no heart, no expression), even if they one day had a whim to know the taste of sex and had a child with someone, it wouldn't feel out of character. Still, one could only say it was fortunate they weren't the type of "troublemakers" who found joy in destruction, like his own race.
Otherwise, with the abilities of the Shapeshifters, they could cause turmoil among the high command of a nation, more or less.
Or perhaps... in the long millennia, they might have already tried something like that.
After all, who's to know?
