Chapter 5: Chapter 5: You Still Want to Be a Special Envoy with a Voice This Quiet?!
"An envoy from the Liches?"
Lucifer never dreamed the visitor before him would have such an extraordinary background. If he remembered correctly, the Liches had migrated and settled in Leithania decades ago. Although the lord of the Lich Royal Court had once declared that the knowledge their race possessed would remain open to all Sarkaz, they had not been involved in the internal affairs of the Royal Courts and Kazdel for a long time.
Lucifer scrutinized Ermengarde, who stood before him, fidgeting.
This scent... she really is a Lich. However...
"Hmm... she can hold her own against Warfarin, I guess."
Lucifer's gaze swept over Ermengarde's chest for a moment before turning to Warfarin beside him. He couldn't help but shake his head with exasperation. It seemed the quality of life in Leithania wasn't much better than here.
As for Warfarin, upon seeing that the visitor was not the terrifying Blood Demon Overlord, she quickly relaxed.
"Hey... you were just thinking something rude, weren't you?"
Lucifer didn't answer, merely holding out his hand as if demanding something back.
"...Give back that bottle of Wyvern blood wine."
"Just now, I did not utter a single thing, my lord."
The thick scent of blood that permeated the air never faded. Even Ermengarde could sense it. She couldn't help but give a wry smile, cold sweat trickling down her forehead.
"Uh..."
Even with her exceptionally slow senses, she realized that she had unknowingly trespassed into the territory of a Blood Demon.
This is bad! This time I'm really screwed!
Just as she was about to use her magnificent intellect to find an excuse, Lucifer spoke first.
"For what reason have you returned to Kazdel, Lich? And where is the lord of your court? Have him come and see me."
Lucifer's frivolous demeanor instantly shifted to a solemn one.
His crimson, blood-like eyes stared at Ermengarde. The blood lurking in the shadows began to surge, and an immense pressure emanated from all around him.
It was in this moment that Lucifer truly looked like a Blood Demon Prince... one who could make countless creatures feel an instinctual fear. That was not an aura a common Blood Demon should possess.
Realizing this fact, Ermengarde completely lost any thought of being evasive or trying to bluff her way through. She confessed her purpose all at once.
"Aah!!—The Lich Royal Court received an invitation and a royal decree from the Demon King to attend a meeting! But my teacher is not available to attend at this time. S-so, he assigned me to come as his representative! It's just that I haven't been to Kazdel in a long time, it's changed so much... so I got a little lost..."
After speaking, Ermengarde lowered her head in shame, like a helpless young girl.
Perhaps she truly was just that. At the very least, she was younger than Lucifer and had never been threatened with force... her eyes were filled with innocence.
Seeing that Lucifer remained silent, Ermengarde thought to pull out the sigil of the Lich Royal Court from the void in her chest to prove her authenticity, but she was stopped by Lucifer first.
"That's unnecessary... I believe you, Lich."
As soon as he spoke, the terrifying atmosphere vanished. The blood in the shadows ceased its turmoil. He had only wanted to test if she was a spy from another land; he had no intention of intimidating a Lich who was new to the world.
And Ermengarde's aura of purity was simply too genuine. She had an innate, clear-eyed foolishness about her that was nothing like an act. Furthermore, the "Void" that the Lich race used to store and retrieve items was not something an ordinary person could fake. If there truly was someone who could create such a realistic imitation, it would likely only be the Shapeshifter clan of the Sarkaz.
And from his conversations with the Shapeshifters, Lucifer knew they could even extract the memories of those they mimicked.
Upon learning this, Lucifer couldn't help but exclaim internally: Damn it!
Lucifer was relieved he hadn't become their target. Otherwise, with his weighty memories as a transmigrator, he could probably shock them for a hundred years.
"Eh? Really?!"
Ermengarde was still unnerved, afraid that Lucifer would go back on his word.
Seeing this, Lucifer decided to use the Blood Demon Overlord's name.
"I am the Blood Demon Prince, Lucifer. And the Blood Demon Overlord, Ducale, is my direct superior."
"Oh... then he's not a very good person either."
Ermengarde had never seen the Blood Demon Overlord in person, but she had often heard stories about him from her teacher and other Sarkaz.
"I strongly agree."
"Ah..."
Lucifer immediately showed that he had no objection to that. Although the Blood Demon Overlord had done him a favor, it didn't mean he had to become a filial son of the Blood Demons, worshiping the Overlord like a father every day. Besides, the Overlord's personality was well-known; it could be said that he had received "unanimous praise" (sarcasm) among the Sarkaz.
"You are correct... but even so, the King of the Corpse Eaters, Nezzalem, is my senior. The Queen of the Banshee Royal Court, Laqeramaline, is my senior. The Shapeshifters are my comrades. The great General Tracy is my brother-in-arms... And you are?"
Faced with Lucifer rattling off a list of important figures, a bewildered Ermengarde blinked her small eyes. Even though, in practice, those figures didn't have a very deep relationship with Lucifer, it didn't stop her from thinking that he was incredibly impressive.
"Soldier, speak!!"
"Uh... Yes, sir!! I am the special envoy of the Liches! Ermengarde, sir!"
"No power! I can't hear you at all!! You still want to be a special envoy with a voice as quiet as an ant?!"
"Yes, sir!! I am the special envoy of my teacher, Fleamont!! The Lord of the Lich Royal Court! My name is Ermengarde!!!"
Ermengarde's beautiful face turned crimson from shouting at the top of her lungs. Her voice echoed throughout Lucifer's old mansion.
"Good! Very spirited!!"
Warfarin, who was standing to the side, could only cover her ears while looking at the two of them with exasperation. She could understand that Ermengarde had been tricked by Lucifer until she was dazed. As for Lucifer himself... one could only say that it was very much in line with the mental state of a modern Blood Demon.
"Alright, you said your purpose was to act as the Lich Royal Court's representative to meet with the Demon King, is that right?"
"Yes, sir... the Demon King has ordered a meeting of the Royal Courts. My teacher, Fleamont, is unable to attend due to personal reasons, so he had me come in his stead... Hmph! How can there be such an irresponsible teacher in this world!"
Hearing her complaints, Lucifer fell into thought. Compared to the past, the geography of Kazdel had changed quite a bit. Even if he told her the location of the palace, she probably wouldn't find it anytime soon. And looking at Ermengarde's pure and innocent demeanor, Lucifer would bet Warfarin's ass that he could trick her into bed at least twice... He really didn't know how that Lich named Fleamont dared to let her come to Kazdel alone.
"I understand... Follow me."
"Ah? D-did I break the law?"
"What are you talking about? I'm taking you to the palace to meet the Demon King."
"Oh... I thought you were going to arrest me. Thank you."
Lucifer took back his previous statement... he could trick this Lich girl into bed at least three times. Not only was her chest a concern... her IQ was a concern as well!
Lucifer shook his head wearily, put on a trench coat, and prepared to leave with Ermengarde.
"Wait a minute... what about me!"
Warfarin, who had been silent for most of the chapter, quickly raised her hand to reclaim what little screen time she had left.
Lucifer thought for a moment, then suddenly remembered that his house hadn't been cleaned in a long while.
"You can help me watch the house... and take the opportunity to clean it up nicely."
"I'm not---"
Warfarin was about to refuse, but when she glanced at Lucifer's cabinet of blood wine, a wicked laugh echoed in her mind.
However, Lucifer had anticipated this. He immediately activated his trap card.
"If I come back and find that even a single bottle of that blood wine is missing... you can just wait for the Blood Demon Overlord to put a bounty on your head."
"Your command is my sacred duty! I will not disappoint you, sir! Sir!"
"Very good, soldier!!"
"Uh... you two aren't actually soldiers, are you?" Ermengarde looked at the two of them playing their parts with pure innocence.
