Chapter 565: Ambushing Edward.
"A lot." Edward replied in a low deep voice. His eyes trailed over the girls that he considered liars. The FNBI had nothing on the women in his family, they could dig up information and keep secrets better than any spy in the world.
How long had it taken them to figure out that Cillian was alive? He recalled the first time Phoebe had asked for information on her grandfather. Had she known since then? It certainly explained her persistence on knowing about his death.
And his mother, Edward could not believe that the woman with the biggest mouth in the house in terms of gossip had kept secrets too. Hadn't she burned with anxiety to spill everything?
He had heard her say once that if she knew something, she had to spill, or her mouth would stink. How come it was not stinking now?
Edward looked at Maureen, for her, he was not even shocked. To be angry with her felt like shooting himself in the foot because Maureen had always done what Maureen wanted to do. He had never been able to pin her to the ground, she was a free flying balloon but instead of air, she was filled up with explosives.
Then there was Rekha. He thought he had sent a spy into Phoebe's camp, but the spy had become a double agent within a few minutes of meeting the enemy.
The sharp look her father shot her, and the guardians was enough for Phoebe to know that grandpa Rufus had told him everything.
[He knows] She began hiccupping in that instant.
"Oh deary! You should drink a lot of fluids in this condition, here here." Grandma Mayfair raised a glass of water to Phoebe's lips. Jennie immediately ordered Maria to bring different drinks that were at room temperature.
"I told you to watch Phoebe, you are her personal attendant Maria. She is pregnant now and you need to take extra care of her. Are you not up to the job." Her voice was strongly scolding.
"I am a-alright, please do not blame Maria for this." Phoebe came to her defense.
If anyone had been giving her extra care in the family while keeping her secret, it was Maria. Phoebe knew that Maria had secretly been adding pregnancy nourishing and preserving medicines to her food and drinks. She made sure to secretly buy larger clothes of the same style as the ones that did not fit her anymore so that nobody would suspect the sudden unexplained changes in her size. Maria was an angel.
[I am just worried that father is going to skin me alive now that he knows.]
Just like Phoebe, Jennie began to get hiccups of her own, her scathing gaze directed to her husband. "Phoebe, why are you looking at your father with worried eyes? Has he said anything to you which had made you worry? Is he angry with you? What did you do Edward?" She asked Phoebe but her eyes did not leave Edward, not once.
Blinking in bewilderment, Phoebe wondered why her mother would think that. "Mother why do you ask that?" She placed the glass of mango juice Maria brought on the table.
Jennie opened her mouth, but no sound came, she did not know how to respond, and her husband did not make it easy for her.
"Yes honey, why would I be angry at Phoebe?" He asked, pinning his folded arms to his chest.
It was Maureen that came to her rescue. "Oh come on Edward! You have been staring at Phoebe like a hungry hawk; Jennie must have assumed that you are furious at her about something. In fact, I came to the same conclusion." She tossed out carelessly letting out a frustrated grumble.
Edward stood up, gave them all a scathing look, turned and walked off.
"See! he is such a drama queen. Don't make mountains out of mole hills Edwardo." Maureen shouted such that her brother would hear her.
Edward hated it when Maureen called him Edwardo. He turned around and glared at her once and then vanished out of the door.
Knowing gazes were exchanged between three of the women, they were more than sure that Rufus had told Edward everything hence, the sudden change in his behavior.
With a slight tilt in the head, Maureen motioned Phoebe and Rekha to follow her out so that they could discuss it privately. They left behind a disgruntled Jennie who did not enjoy being excluded anymore.
"What now! Uncle Edward must know that I lied to him about me getting my memories back. I am screwed! What if he chases me away for real this time? I should have told him the truth." Rekha's trembling hands wiped her dripping neck.
Letting out a bitter laugh, Maureen continued to storm forward. "That venomous look he gave me ha! I am certain that he knows that I am a guardian and that Phoebe has been prying from me information about what is at that academy. Remember uncle Rufus said that he would talk to him about it." She twisted her face, today she planned to have a face-off with her brother.
Phoebe pulled on Maureen's arm. "Where are we going?" Her gaze fixed on the hallway's distant end where her father's study was located. "I hope that you are not about to do what I am thinking." She quietly said a silent prayer.
Maureen's arm twisted loose like a snake escaping. "Yes! It is exactly what you are thinking, I am going to talk to Edward. I am not ready to walk around on eggshells in my own house. You don't hide from the snake Phoebe, you cut off the head, remove the skin and burn its body." She spoke through pursed lips, her feet stomping the floor once again as she walked forward.
"Maybe you should not let him hear you calling him a snake." Phoebe suggested.
"I mean a figurative snake Pheebs, and the snake is the situation not your dearest papa." Maureen explained.
"Perhaps we should wait for him to call us then." Rekha made a good suggestion; it was better to let Edward cool off.
Maureen released another bitter laugh. "Rekha, it is better to strike the iron while it is still hot and right now, it is boiling. I know my brother, the longer he drags something out, the bigger it grows." She spat out, her hand gripped the doorknob, opening the door without warning.
The moment the door flung open, Edward rose from the executive chair with his sword in hand and made his way to the sofas in the open area. "Ah, the three pretty little liars, it took you long enough." He spoke gently with a lot of sarcasm, loosening his tie. "I have been expecting you." He offered them seats.
Phoebe looked at the sword and gulped. Maybe they were the snakes about to be beheaded and skinned.
