Chapter 374: Chapter 374: The Colossus Advances
The murky clouds were suddenly torn apart by a beam of light, creating a gap through which the combatants below could see the star-filled sky above.
A soldier, his neck savaged by a zombified comrade, felt his vision rapidly blur due to the corrosive effects of the toxic mist and his severe injuries.
"Ghrr... gnrrr!"
Even in his dazed state, he could clearly hear the horrifying sounds of his undead comrade chewing and swallowing his flesh.
He knew that once his consciousness fully faded and his body ceased functioning, he too would become one of the undead.
But—
Whoosh—BOOM—!
Another blinding beam of golden light descended like a strike from the heavens, landing near the wounded soldier and triggering a small earthquake.
The impact unleashed a shockwave of radiant energy that emanated golden flames.
Corrupted knights, heretical soldiers, and the undead feasting on the fallen were all engulfed in the golden fire, their bodies igniting instantly.
"No! No! Agh!"
"Save us, my lord!"
"Ahhh!"
The flames burned not just their bodies but their very souls, and despite their desperate screams and pleas to their demonic masters, they could not escape their fate. They were reduced to ash.
The undead, too, were purified, their grotesque forms reverting to lifeless corpses.
The golden light, however, had a completely opposite effect on the soldier and his nearby comrades. Those who had been on the verge of death were miraculously restored, their mutilated bodies rapidly regenerating flesh and skin.
It was as though the golden radiance held incredible restorative powers, able to heal wounds and distinguish allies from enemies.
"Gasp! Hah!"
The soldier, now fully healed, drew deep breaths and realized he could breathe freely in the toxic mist without harm. Stunned, he stood and drew his knife, scanning his surroundings.
His comrades were also restored, looking healthier and stronger than ever before.
At the center of the miraculous explosion stood a tall figure clad in golden armor, wearing a war god's helm and a white cape.
The imposing figure—a striking woman with a near-perfect physique—pulled a golden spear from the ground where it had caused a massive crater.
Turning to the soldier and his comrades, she spoke in a resonant voice:
"Return to your ranks. The Human Empire will take over the battle from here."
With those words, she turned toward the blood-soaked battlefield and the endless waves of traitors, heretics, and demonic creatures. She began walking toward them with an air of unshakable confidence.
The soldier and his comrades stared in stunned silence.
The golden light had incinerated their enemies nearby, clearing the area. Left with no other option, they ran to rejoin their main forces, hastily discussing what they had witnessed.
"Who was that? She's so powerful!"
"A saint? A holy nun from the church? But her attire didn't look like theirs."
"Didn't you hear her? She said the Human Empire is taking over the battle."
"The Human Empire... There's been gossip about them conquering border fortresses, forcing us to take longer routes to the front."
Their conversation was interrupted by a ground-shaking boom-boom from behind, nearly causing them to stumble.
Looking back, they were greeted by a shocking sight.
The woman in golden armor had grown—expanded to nearly 100 times her original size!
Standing over 200 meters tall, the now-gigantic woman retained her golden armor, helm, cape, shield, and spear, which had all scaled proportionally. Her skin now gleamed like marble, and her eyes radiated golden light.
"Oh my God!"
"God has manifested!"
The soldiers, along with tens of thousands from the Holy Roman Empire's elite forces, fell to their knees, convinced they were witnessing a divine miracle. Even cursed knights and nuns who had consumed saintly flesh bowed in prayer.
The towering figure, mistaken for an angelic manifestation, had inspired both awe and dread.
Among the traitors and heretics, many froze in place, their will to fight shattered. Some of the more cowardly, who had not fully transformed into demonic beings, also knelt, hoping to escape punishment.
However, the majority who had pledged themselves to hell trembled in fear but refused to yield.
The colossus woman raised her spear in a throwing stance. A moment later—
Boom—!
The golden spear shot forward with deafening speed, slamming into the twisted, corrupted blood-red wall that had stood as a formidable barrier.
BOOM—!
The wall shattered, erupting into a massive explosion of radiant energy. A shockwave of golden fire consumed everything—traitors, heretics, and the corrupted creatures alike—leaving nothing but ash.
With a single strike, the colossus had achieved more destruction than the Holy Roman Empire's forces had managed after weeks of grueling combat.
The overwhelming power of this attack broke the enemy's morale completely.
The corrupted forces, known for their resilience and regenerative abilities, had always relied on attrition to overwhelm their human opponents. But the golden flames were absolute, bypassing all their defenses.
Many heretics abandoned the fight, fleeing without hesitation. The most fanatical hesitated, torn between retreat and fear of hell's retribution.
Amid this chaos, the colossus retrieved her spear and spoke again, her amplified voice echoing across the battlefield:
"I am Pallas Athena, a Greek goddess of war and a servant of the Emperor of Humanity!
Humans, hear me: Hold your ground and await further orders. The Human Empire will handle the rest of the battle.
You shall all become citizens of the Human Empire!"
As Athena finished, hundreds of transport ships and gunships pierced the cloudy skies, descending into view.
And then—
A fleet of massive battleships emerged, led by the Dark Angel First Fleet. The flagship, a colossal Carthage-class supercarrier four kilometers long and 800 meters tall, hovered just 3,000 meters above the ground.
The soldiers stared, dumbfounded, at the titanic ships.
"This... this is impossible!"
"How is something that big flying?!"
The enemy forces, seeing both Athena and the fleet, lost the last remnants of their fighting spirit. Many fled without a second thought.
The more devoted heretics hesitated, knowing that retreating might incur hell's wrath.
While they wavered, the Human Empire's fleet unleashed its first barrage. Thousands of missiles and plasma blasts rained down on the battlefield, illuminating the dark skies with blinding light.
When the smoke cleared, the once-imposing blood-red wall was gone, along with the toxic mist and corrupted clouds.
For the first time in years, the stars shone brightly over the battlefield.
The soldier who had been healed earlier could only gape in stunned silence.
The appearance of Athena and the Human Empire's overwhelming power was unlike anything they had ever witnessed.
Though the church had long claimed divine protection, centuries of stalemates suggested otherwise. Seeing Athena in action made the soldiers question their faith.
Perhaps the Human Empire and its war goddess offered a real chance for salvation.
Athena's transformation into a colossal figure was a common divine technique among Greek gods, amplifying power at the cost of speed. It was ideal for crushing weak foes and inspiring awe.
The fleet began landing reinforcements, including elite guards, Greek demigods, and the legendary Grey Knights.
The Dark Angel's First Fleet deployed thousands of support troops and hundreds of fully grown Astartes warriors.
The tide of battle had turned irrevocably.
