Chapter 915: Chapter 915 - Trailer (Part 1)
Using the opportunity to discuss the contract with Andrew, Laila successfully escaped her mother's clutches. To be precise, she used work as an excuse, allowing Oswald, who had no desire to see his granddaughter married off, to bring her back to New York.
Although she temporarily avoided her mother's relentless nagging about the wedding date, Laila still kept the matter in mind. After all, if she wanted to take a wedding leave, she, as the boss, had to ensure all her current work was planned and wrapped up properly.
She calculated the workload ahead, and the result was startling.
The upcoming Golden Globes and Oscars were given, followed by the filming of 'Blood Diamond'. In between, she also needed to plan for the summer release of 'The Dark Knight'. By August, she would have to take Roy to the Olympics opening ceremony and then hoped to watch some events she was interested in.
According to her estimates, 'Blood Diamond' would take at least six months to film. Shooting overseas would require significant coordination, and the location wasn't particularly safe, necessitating additional security measures. She certainly didn't want her crew to make global headlines due to some unforeseen accident.
If she wanted the film to be eligible for the awards season at the end of the year and the beginning of the next, she would have to complete all the filming by October. Post-production would need to happen concurrently to ensure the film could be released by the end of the year, just in time for the next Oscars.
To make a strong push for awards, she would have to start campaigning as soon as the film was released. Without substantial promotion, how could she ensure that the thousands of voters would even know the film existed?
With all these tasks lined up, it seemed like she wouldn't have any free time until after the next Oscars.
Thinking about this schedule, even Laila felt a bit overwhelmed. It seemed she would have to disappoint Roy this time. Even if she won an award, she likely wouldn't have the time to plan a wedding. It wasn't that she didn't want to, but there simply wasn't enough time.
Sure enough, just after returning from her vacation, she signed Andrew on her first day back at work, and on the second day, Director Nolan showed up at her office.
"The summer release is approaching. Shouldn't we have a trailer ready?" he said as soon as he walked into her office, without a hint of guilt.
Laila was stunned by his audacity: "Can't you handle the trailer?" He was, after all, a future great director. Was it okay to push the trailer onto someone else just to avoid the work? If she remembered correctly, he didn't seem to have much on his plate lately. Why couldn't he just edit the trailer himself?
"I'm not as good as you are. If I can get something better, why settle for a subpar product?" Nolan's tone was full of confidence. If one didn't know he was also a co-director and a highly capable one at that, they might think he was making a perfectly reasonable point. But he should know better. On set, his authority was no less than Laila's.
At least, most of the crew didn't dare to act up in front of her, but he was the one who could pester her for hours over a single shot.
But he wasn't entirely wrong.
He could edit the trailer, but the results just didn't satisfy him.
Looking at the trailer for the previous movie, it was clear that the only people who paid attention were Batman fans. That wasn't the purpose of a trailer. A good trailer should make more people aware of the movie and spark their desire to buy tickets, not just cater to those who are already interested.
In this regard, Laila was undoubtedly successful. Her previous movie trailers almost always caused a sensation. While her massive fan base played a role, the effectiveness of her editing was also a key factor.
Let's not forget, that this legendary director, though she hadn't yet won a Best Director Oscar, had already won a Best Editing award for her innovative editing techniques!
This alone showed that in terms of editing, Laila possessed some of the most advanced techniques in the world. And given how well-received her films were, it was clear that her editing skills significantly enhanced her movies.
Yes, Nolan could certainly put together a trailer lasting anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes, but he also saw this as a great opportunity to learn from Laila and see how she crafted her trailers.
"You win..." Looking at his expression that practically said, "This is how it is, deal with it," what else could Laila say? If she tried to reason with him, he'd talk about ability. If she talked about ability, he'd play the fool. By the time she finished arguing with him, she could have already edited the trailer.
So she didn't bother saying more and simply agreed.
Besides, Nolan was already a director under her banner. Sharing some techniques with him wasn't a big deal. Even if she didn't, given enough time, the industry would figure it out anyway. Look at all the new directors studying her films for inspiration.
From what she knew, some university film departments had even started offering courses analyzing her movies. The first time she heard this, it shocked her. The thought of people dissecting her films frame by frame, just as she had done in her past life, made her blush a little.
"When it comes to trailers, the first thing we need to understand is what kind of information the audience hopes to get from them," Laila explained without holding back when he asked.
"The first people to pay attention to trailers are usually two types: those interested in the content of the movie, like comic or book fans, and fans of the director or actors, who are drawn to the film because of their admiration for certain individuals."
Nolan took out his notebook, sat down opposite her, and began taking notes. "How can a trailer attract more people?"
Laila smiled. "You can't rush this. You can't drop the watermelon to pick up the sesame. Compared to attracting new viewers, don't you think the people already interested in the movie are more likely to bring in box office revenue?"
"So you're saying the trailer should primarily focus on attracting them?" Nolan felt her perspective somewhat subverted his understanding. He had always believed that the main purpose of a trailer was to draw in people who hadn't initially planned to watch the movie.
Laila nodded. "You could say that. First, secure the easy box office, then aim for more."
Nolan pondered this. "So what's the right way to do it?" At the same time, he was thinking about how he would approach it if it were up to him.
