Chapter 36: Lake of rage
The squad was making their way to Mahogany City to get Haru's 6th Gym badge. They were on Haru's fixed boat now.
Haru looked at the group. "We're here, just need to get past the Lake of Rage."
Almost on cue, the water began to shake as a powerful wave surged through the air. The once-clear sky began to darken, and a storm started to pick up intensity. The boat began to shake from the force of the rising waves. In a split second, James called out Scyther, grabbing Jessie as they flew away. Haru quickly sent out Scizor, grabbing Casey as Meowth followed. The moment they landed on the ground, they saw it.
Rising from the water was a Shiny Gyarados—ten times larger than a normal one. Its eyes were blood red as it roared, sending a chill down everyone's spine. The people who had been taking pictures on the shore immediately ran in panic.
James looked at the Gyarados in awe. "As if a normal Gyarados wasn't scary enough..."
Haru's eyes widened as he saw the massive Pokémon. In his past life, he had encountered giant Pokémon, but nothing like this. "What in the name of all legendary Pokémon..."
"Hyper Beam!"
A powerful Hyper Beam shot through the air, hitting the Gyarados and sending it tumbling back. From above, they saw who had made the attack—a tall, thin man with bright scarlet red spiked hair, pale skin, and dark eyes. He wore a blue suit with orange accents around the sleeves and chest, along with a dark belt and brown boots with orange heels. A brown cloak, red on the inside, billowed behind him. He was riding on his Dragonite.

To everyone else, this was an incredible sight. But for Haru, it was a meeting he had hoped to avoid. The moment his eyes met Lance's, an overwhelming sense of awkwardness filled the air.
Haru immediately sent out Electivire, not wanting to meet Lance's gaze. To him, Lance was still the arrogant champion who had destroyed him in the Champion League. On the other hand, Lance just looked at Haru, wanting to apologize but knowing this wasn't the time for it.
Casey sent out her Meganium, preparing for battle, while Jessie sent out her newly caught Gyarados. The contrast between the two Gyarados was striking—while Jessie's was still quite young and looked almost like a "kid" compared to the giant Shiny Gyarados, the battle that was about to unfold would prove to be anything but ordinary.
The tension in the air was palpable. Both Haru and Lance knew that this was a pivotal moment—not just for the battle at hand, but for the unresolved emotions between them. Neither of them knew what to say, but the storm outside was nothing compared to the storm of emotions brewing between them.
As the storm raged above and the ground trembled from the intensity of the battle, the air between Haru and Lance was thick with tension. The Pokémon on both sides stood ready, poised for action.
Lance's Dragonite, with its powerful wings, hovered in the air, while Haru's Electivire took a defensive stance, its yellow fur crackling with electricity. Casey's Meganium was positioned protectively in front of her, its leaves rustling as it prepared to support the team with its healing abilities.
Jessie, on the other hand, glared at her Gyarados, still a far cry from the monstrous size of the one that had emerged from the lake, but formidable in its own right. "Let's show them what we're made of, Gyarados!" she called, her voice fierce.
The two Gyarados faced each other, their tails slashing through the air, sending waves crashing against the shore. Gyarados growled, its gaze cold and calculating as it prepared to face off with its colossal counterpart.
Lance's voice broke through the intensity of the moment. "Haru… I didn't expect to see you here, and certainly not like this."
Haru glanced up at Lance, his expression hard. "You've got a lot of nerve showing up here, Lance."
Lance's eyes softened, but there was no denying the regret in them. "I know, I... I never wanted to hurt you, Haru. You have to understand that."
Haru clenched his fists, the memories of their battle in the Champion League rushing back. The pain of that defeat, of losing everything he had worked for, still lingered. "You did. You crushed me. I had to start over because of you."
The words stung, but Lance didn't flinch. "I didn't know how much you were hurt by it... I thought you'd bounce back, like everyone else. But I realize now that it was wrong of me to think that way."
Haru looked away, unable to meet Lance's gaze. His heart was a whirlwind of emotions—anger, hurt, but also a strange, lingering feeling of understanding. He'd trained so hard, lost so much, but in a way, that defeat had also shaped who he was now. Still, that didn't make it any easier.
Before either could say more, the battle began in earnest. Lance shouted, "Dragonite, use Hyper Beam!"
The Dragonite, its massive wings flapping powerfully, aimed its energy at Gyarados with pinpoint precision. The beam was a burst of raw energy, but Shiny Gyarados was quick to react.
"Hydro Pump, now!" Jessie yelled.
Gyarados unleashed a massive blast of water that collided with Dragonite's Hyper Beam. The two attacks created a powerful explosion that sent water flying in every direction. The ground shook, and the wind howled as the storm grew stronger.
Haru quickly turned his attention to his own battle. "Electivire, use Thunderbolt on the Gyarados!"
The electric Pokémon sent out a powerful bolt of electricity that struck shiny Gyarados, causing it to flinch and hiss in pain. It wasn't enough to take it down, but it was enough to give Haru the upper hand for the moment.
Casey's Meganium, sensing an opening, called out, "Leaf Storm!"
The attack surrounded shiney Gyarados with swirling leaves and wind, pushing it back, but Jessie's Pokémon wasn't ready to give up yet. It roared in defiance, preparing for its next move.
Lance's voice cut through the chaos, his command steady. "Dragonite, use Outrage!"
The Dragonite's eyes glowed with fury as it unleashed a flurry of strikes, its fists and tail glowing with purple energy. The Dragonite slammed into the ground, causing cracks to form beneath it as it bulldozed through the battlefield, targeting the Shiny Gyarados with relentless force.
"Gyarados, fight back!" Jessie shouted. "Use Dragon Rage!"
The two dragons clashed in the middle of the battlefield, their attacks creating shockwaves that reverberated across the lake. The storm raged on as they continued their battle, the energy of their moves intensifying with each strike.
Haru narrowed his eyes, watching the battle unfold. The sheer power of the Pokémon was awe-inspiring, but he couldn't let his guard down. He turned to Electivire. "Electivire, hit it with a Focus Blast, now!"
The Electric-type Pokémon gathered energy in its fists before releasing a powerful blast of psychic energy, aimed straight at the Shiny Gyarados. The attack landed, causing the Gyarados to roar in pain. It was still standing, but the damage was evident.
Just then, the giant Gyarados unleashed another roar, causing the storm to grow even fiercer. The water beneath them churned violently, and the atmosphere became electric with the build-up of energy.
Lance's Dragonite, seeing an opportunity, launched itself at Gyarados. With a final, powerful Dragon Claw, it struck the Shiny Gyarados, sending it crashing back into the lake.
The storm began to subside, the roar of Gyarados fading into the distance as it retreated back into the depths of the water.
For a moment, there was silence, the echoes of the battle lingering in the air. Haru stood still, breathing heavily as he looked at Lance. The tension between them had not disappeared, but in this moment, they were united by the fight.
Lance nodded, his expression solemn. "I'm sorry, Haru. I know we have a lot to work through, but I hope this battle showed you that I don't want to fight you anymore. I never wanted to hurt you."
Haru met his gaze, the bitterness in his heart starting to fade. "We'll see, Lance. For now... just stay out of my way."
James then spoke. "We can solve you two problems later, because up"
Everyone then saw it the Red Gyarados was using Surf and will if a Normal Gyarados using Surf was terrifying one this size was um will we are fucked moment.
Haru then screamed. "Electivire, use while charge now".
Lance then called out. "Dragonite Hyperbeem full power".
Jessie called out. "Gyarados use you surf to counter".
Casey then screamed. "Leaf storm Meganium".
It was all or noting moment, as the moves classes, as everyone was stopping hoping worked and it did, but then then the rain starts again, as they all though one thing Fuck.
Haru then had an idea. "This going to get me kill".
He called for Swampert, as he called for Electivire to follow him, as Swampert took to the red Gyarados, the plan was simple to contact wirh the Gyarados with his Aura power and contect with Shiny/Red Gyarados and will to anyone that didn't know it was like Haru was trying to get him self kill
Haru sent a wave of Aura, as it hit the red Gyarados, as then it stopped as the Gyarados and was ready to attack him with hyper beem, as Haru was trying make the wave link match as on his hand was his Ultraball to capture the Pokémon
As the Hyperbeem was ready to fire, as Lance was ready to fly in it happend
Click. as the wave link matched with Haru
The moment the Click echoed through the air, everyone froze. The sound of the Ultra Ball locking signaled something none of them could quite believe.
The Red Gyarados, still poised to unleash its destructive Hyper Beam, suddenly halted mid-motion. Its glowing eyes flickered briefly as the wave of Aura Haru had sent through the air reached its peak. The massive Pokémon was no longer ready to attack but stood still, as if entranced by the connection Haru had forged.
Haru, his body tense and his heart racing, held his breath, praying the connection would hold. Sweat trickled down his face, his focus solely on the swirling aura that enveloped the Red Gyarados. He felt a deep, primal energy—the connection between himself and the massive creature was unlike anything he had ever felt before. It was more than just a bond; it was a true link of understanding and power.
Electivire stood beside him, crackling with electricity, prepared for any unexpected developments. But the Pokémon stood still, almost docile. The world seemed to slow down, as the tension in the air was palpable.
Lance, Dragonite poised and ready for any sudden changes, could hardly believe what was happening. He'd seen battles, had witnessed powerful Pokémon before, but this... this was beyond anything he could have expected.
Jessie and her Gyarados stood tensely as well. Jessie's face was a mixture of awe and frustration. She had fought for control of her own Gyarados, but seeing Haru's connection to the Red Gyarados—something she had never been able to achieve—made her realize just how much she had to learn.
Casey, watching Haru's every move, bit her lip in anticipation. Her Meganium was still standing by her side, ready for anything, but her attention was solely on Haru's daring plan.
Then it happened.
With a sudden, sharp flash of light, the Ultra Ball in Haru's hand glowed brightly, and in that instant, the Red Gyarados let out a final, defiant roar before being sucked into the ball with a force that made the earth shake beneath them.
The ball wobbled once, twice… three times.
The world held its breath.
Click.
The sound of the Ultra Ball locking was unmistakable. Haru's body sagged in relief, his heart still racing, but his mission was complete. He had captured the Red Gyarados—the legendary creature that had caused so much chaos.
"...Did you just…" Lance trailed off, his voice a mixture of disbelief and awe as he stared at Haru. "Did you really just... capture it?"
Haru stood, his legs shaking from the adrenaline, but a smirk spread across his face. "Yeah, looks like I did."
James, who had been watching from the sidelines with wide eyes, couldn't help but exhale sharply. "Well, that's one way to solve the problem…"
Jessie's jaw dropped. "How the hell did you manage to capture that? I've been trying to control mine for years!"
Haru just shrugged, still trying to catch his breath. "Sometimes, you just have to believe in the bond you share with your Pokémon. And, you know... a bit of luck doesn't hurt."
Electivire gave a satisfied chirp, having watched the entire process with interest. Swampert, still beside Haru, let out a low growl, as if acknowledging their victory in its own way.
Casey stepped forward, smiling proudly. "That was amazing, Haru. I never knew you could do something like that."
Haru gave a small smile in return, though it was clear he was still processing what had just happened. "It was risky, but... I couldn't let it go to waste. I think it just needed someone who understood its power."
Lance finally dismounted Dragonite, his demeanor more serious now, but a look of respect in his eyes. "You've earned it, Haru. Not many trainers would even dream of attempting something like that... especially not with a Pokémon like the Red Gyarados."
The storm that had been raging in the skies began to settle, the clouds parting to reveal the fading remnants of the battle. The water calmed, and the atmosphere felt lighter.
But even with the calm after the storm, there was still that unspoken tension between Haru and Lance. Both of them knew there were still words to be said and unresolved feelings. However, in this moment, the capture of the Red Gyarados had put a temporary end to their conflict, and they would have to face their unresolved issues later.
"Looks like we've got ourselves a new problem to deal with," Haru muttered, looking at the Ultra Ball in his hand, his finger lightly grazing the surface.
"Yeah," Lance agreed, his gaze lingering on the ball as well. "And it's going to be a wild ride."
Jessie and James, still reeling from the surprise, exchanged glances. It was clear they weren't quite ready to face the repercussions of the battle just yet, but one thing was certain: Haru's skill had turned the tides of the battle, and the group was stronger for it.
"We'll deal with the aftermath later," Jessie muttered, though her voice was tinged with admiration. "For now... let's head to Mahogany City. You've earned that badge, Haru."
With the storm now behind them and the Red Gyarados captured, the group continued on their journey toward Mahogany City, knowing that their adventures were far from over—and the true challenges were only just beginning.
