Chapter 120: Chapter 120: Battle Road
Silas watched as Gloom spewed out clusters of green seeds from its perpetually drooling purple mouth, aiming them straight at Boldore.
Even though he knew it was nectar and not drool, Silas still paled as the stench spread around.
It was practically a biochemical weapon-level attack.
True to its name, Gloom released an unbearable stench from its petals and pollen when threatened or engaged in battle.
According to records, the furthest someone has ever been knocked out by the smell of a Gloom was from a distance of 5 kilometers away. That alone spoke volumes about its potency.
However, it was said that some people actually liked the scent that Gloom released.
With his face alternating between pale and dark, Silas stuffed a pair of purifiers into his nostrils. Seeing the opposing Trainer breathe in deeply with a satisfied expression, he instantly realized that he had run into one of those rare one-in-a-thousand people.
Just his luck.
Spectators all around the battlefield quickly pinched their noses shut.
Gloom remained unbothered by their reactions. It had long gotten used to it its nature determined that not many would like it.
But its Trainer loved its scent, and that alone made Gloom feel incredibly happy.
No matter how much others detested it, all it needed was one person's affection.
That said, Boldore didn't have a sense of smell, so Gloom's poison gas attack had no effect.
As the Bullet Seed landed on the ground around it, Boldore barely flinched at the slight pain and calmly began setting up the battlefield.
Bullet Seed wasn't known for high offensive power. For a Pokémon like Boldore with solid physical defense, even with a type disadvantage, the damage dealt was minimal.
"Harden, then counter with Rock Slide. If you get tired, use Rest," Silas instructed calmly.
The truth was, Gloom's battle potential wasn't particularly high. Its movepool was pitifully small.
Most of its easily learned moves were powders or status-affecting moves. It only had a few Grass-type offensive moves, such as Absorb, Bullet Seed, and Mega Drain.
Stronger moves like Giga Drain or signature Grass-type finishers like Solar Beam, Energy Ball, or Seed Bomb were much harder to master.
As for moves outside its typing? Those were even more difficult for Gloom to learn than high-level Grass-type moves.
And as for utility moves like Attract or Charm which could be incredibly effective in battles the user's type still played a big part in how well they worked.
For instance, imagine an Eevee and a Gloom both using Charm. Even if their "beauty standards" were similar in the Pokémon world, Gloom's body odor alone could break the immersion completely.
Picture this: your dream girl leans in close to you, but she reeks of a combination of old sneakers, rotting garbage, spoiled eggs, and skunk spray. No matter how beguiled you are, you'd immediately snap out of it.
Unless Gloom evolved into Bellossom using a Sun Stone, those types of moves just weren't going to be effective.
Seeing Boldore remain completely unfazed, Gloom's Trainer blinked, then began frantically searching his shallow knowledge base for a possible explanation finally concluding that Boldore must not have a sense of smell.
That realization made him panic.
Boldore was still a relatively rare sight in Kanto. Common Rock-types like Geodude and Onix were half-organic and still retained a sense of smell.
In the past, his strategy had always worked well against them type advantage plus Gloom's unique trait made for easy wins.
But now that the poison gas had no effect, Gloom's actual offensive capability dropped drastically.
He knew about Gloom's weaknesses. But those high-tier type-specific moves required the Pokémon to learn them naturally, which was extremely difficult without high aptitude.
Hiring someone to teach those moves was an option, but the cost was outrageous and would delay the overall training progress.
And now the opponent had chosen the annoying combo of Harden + Rock Slide + Rest. Absolutely shameless.
With Harden boosting its defense, Bullet Seed's already weak power was reduced even further.
Even though Gloom managed to chip away at some of Boldore's stamina using Mega Drain, the damage would soon be undone by Rest.
Once Boldore woke up, it would immediately retaliate with Rock Slide.
Gloom didn't have any special resistance to Rock-type attacks, and the stamina it lost couldn't be recovered fast enough by Mega Drain.
With no better options left, he gave the next order:
"Gloom, use Stun Spore!"
Watching the clash between Rock Slide and Bullet Seed, Gloom's trainer knew that dragging things out like this would only shrink their chances of winning. He decisively commanded Gloom to paralyze Boldore.
As for Sleep Powder? Forget it. His long experience in this field had taught him that almost every Pokémon that knew Rest also knew Sleep Talk. Putting them to sleep only made the opponent more consistent in their offense.
As for Poison Powder, the Rest move could clear all status conditions, so the only option left was to bet on paralysis, hoping that Boldore wouldn't be able to use Rest while paralyzed. That was his only shot at victory.
When Stun Spore settled on Boldore's body and released arcs of electricity across its frame, both trainers smiled at the same time.
"Reversal!"
Silas had been waiting for this moment.
If a Pokémon was afflicted with a major status condition like Burn, Paralysis, or Poison, the move Reversal would have its power doubled putting its base power at around 140.
That kind of power was stronger than most high-tier moves across all types.
Of course, the only issue was that Pokémon affected by a status condition had a lower chance of successfully using moves, especially Paralysis. Sometimes they couldn't move at all.
But this time, Boldore managed to pull off Reversal smoothly, its body cloaked in a white glow as it charged straight at Gloom.
The opposing trainer's face lit up, "Gloom, use Grass Knot!"
He would never forget this god-tier move against heavy Pokémon. The heavier the target, the higher the damage. But just earlier, Boldore had been motionless, so Grass Knot wouldn't have tripped it at all.
Now that it was moving, it was the perfect moment.
"Gloom! Quick, use Grass Knot!"
But Gloom stood motionless in place, prompting its trainer to shout in desperation.
Boom!
Boldore's Reversal slammed right into Gloom's body.
Gloom collapsed on the ground, eyes swirling, losing its ability to battle.
Gloom's trainer helplessly shook his head and handed over 5,000 Pokédollars to Silas.
He realized too late this was Flinch, a secondary effect caused by Rock Slide, which could prevent a Pokémon from acting.
No wonder the opponent didn't go for the stronger Power Gem. He had been waiting for this moment all along.
He could only blame himself for not noticing Gloom's odd behavior earlier. He'd simply been outplayed.
After Silas gave Boldore a quick recovery to restore its status and stamina, the next challenger stepped onto the opposite platform.
Their eyes met. The new challenger sent out their Pokémon, "Go, Ambipom!"
Time passed, and the battles didn't stop.
More and more spectators gathered around the battlefield where Silas was competing. The crowd buzzed with constant chatter.
"He's so strong. That trainer and Boldore are already on an 8-win streak, right?"
"Yeah, and he's even beaten Water-type and Grass-type Pokémon in between. That's seriously impressive."
"His Boldore's control over sand and rock is nothing like an ordinary Pokémon."
"Not to mention the trainer's strategy is razor sharp. Did you see that? He just broke the opponent's combo again."
