Chapter 17: 17
"Welcome to my home," said Kaito with a smile.
Mikan followed Kaito and Lala out of curiosity and took a good look around Kaito's house. Her first thought was that it was so small.
It was much smaller than her own home—at least a hundred square meters less.
Kaito had no idea what Mikan was thinking. If he did, he would definitely sigh. Although his house was small, it still had more than 70 square meters of usable space. If he sold it, it would cost over 1.5 million yuan. That was already a lot of money, but if he wanted to buy a house like Mikan's family's, the price would be much higher. If Mikan's house were converted into paintings, it would be worth tens of millions—something he absolutely couldn't afford.
Housing prices were really too expensive. He had to live in a small house even if he didn't want to, and many people didn't even have a house this small.
However, these were just thoughts in Mikan's mind. She didn't say them out loud, so the topic never came up. Mikan noticed a computer running in the study at that moment. She looked at it curiously. There were dense red and green characters on the screen. She couldn't understand any of it, so she asked curiously, "What is he doing?"
Kaito smiled and said, "Making more money."
Mikan replied with an "Oh," and just then, Lala suddenly ran over and said to Kaito with a smile, "Kaito, let's take Mikan out to have some fun!"
Mikan's eyes lit up—she also wanted to go out and have a look around. That way, she could clearly see the difference between the parallel worlds. Besides, Kaito had already said this wasn't Japan but China, and she had never traveled abroad. So even if it wasn't a parallel world, she still wanted to go out and explore.
Kaito nodded. "Alright, let's go out and take a look."
"Great!" Lala cheered, and Mikan also nodded with a smile.
Kaito smiled and added, "But before that, we have to see if this robot can make money. If we go out with no money, we'll end up starving."
So he let the program run. The starting capital of just over 70 yuan had now turned into more than 3,000 yuan. When Kaito saw the number, his eyes lit up. This is much better than working a regular job.
Kaito felt relieved. He wouldn't starve even if he quit his job. So he picked up his phone and told his manager that he wanted to resign. The manager tried to persuade him to stay, but Kaito was determined. In the end, he successfully resigned and left the company on good terms.
Mikan, standing next to him, suddenly asked curiously, "Is it really that easy to quit? Isn't it a lifetime system?"
In Japan, lifetime employment is common, so Mikan was curious.
Kaito shook his head. "That's not how it works here, so it's relatively easy to resign."
Mikan nodded in understanding and didn't ask any more questions.
Kaito smiled as he withdrew 2,000 yuan from his account and said to the two of them, "Now that we've earned some money, we can go out and have fun!"
"Awesome!" Lala cheered and ran off pulling Mikan along.
"Tail!" Kaito shouted quickly.
Lala's voice echoed back: "I know."
Kaito checked his pocket again, pulled out the small translator badge, looked at it, and saw that the battery was still charged. Then he saw Pekai flying toward Lala. Kaito quickly shouted, "Pekai! Wait!"
"What's wrong, Kaito?" Pekai turned and asked curiously.
Kaito replied helplessly, "We don't have a robot as advanced as you, so you can't reveal your identity. So when we go out, you can't fly, talk, or walk. It's better to come down and let Lala carry you."
Pekai hovered for a moment and then agreed, "Got it. I understand."
Kaito called Lala again: "Lala, come back!"
Lala brought Mikan back. Kaito explained the situation about Pekai, and Lala smiled, nodded, and picked him up.
Kaito then handed Mikan the translator earpiece that Lala had made for him:
"This is a translator earpiece invented by Lala. It can translate what other people say in real time. It can also translate your speech into a language others can understand. So after you wear this, you won't have to worry about language barriers."
"Thank you," Mikan said with a smile as she accepted it.
After Mikan put it on, Kaito thought carefully once more. After confirming everything was ready, he nodded and said, "Let's go."
They finally left.
The sun was shining brightly outside, and the weather was great. Kaito drove off with Lala, Mikan, and Pekai.
On the way, Kaito thought again about Lala's inventions. Although her inventions were sometimes ridiculous, they were often incredibly useful. So if he started a company to sell them, he could easily become the richest man in the world—far more profitable than stock trading. But running a company would require constant oversight, and there was always the risk of Lala being discovered. To avoid these issues, Kaito abandoned the idea.
"A small fortune is enough," Kaito nodded to himself.
He could open the door of time and space, and countless worlds were waiting to be explored. These things were far more valuable than money—he just needed enough to get by.
"Where do you want to go this time?" Kaito asked Lala and the others again.
Lala blinked and said, "Let's go to the same mall as last time. There's still a lot we haven't tried!"
Kaito smiled and turned to Mikan: "How about you, Mikan?"
"Anywhere's fine," she replied. She didn't know the place, so she just followed her host's lead.
Kaito nodded and asked Pekai: "What about you, Pekai?"
"Wherever Lady Lala goes, I'll follow!" Pekai replied.
"Then let's go to the mall," Kaito agreed.
He took them to the same shopping mall they'd been to before. As they entered, Lala took Mikan's hand and ran around excitedly, pointing things out. She'd say she had played this before, and then suddenly say she hadn't played that one before. She was overjoyed.
At first, Mikan was a little hesitant, but under the influence of Lala's boundless energy, she quickly relaxed.
After all, she was still a young girl, and of course she couldn't resist new and exciting things. Soon, she was laughing and playing along with Lala.
They ran from one side to the other, looking around, and laughter echoed constantly.
The two girls were having a great time. Kaito followed behind, watching them run and jump ahead. Naturally, he was also responsible for carrying the bags and paying for everything. Pekai had started out in Lala's arms but eventually ended up with Kaito, since many of the games and toys required two hands. Lala had no free hands and asked Kaito for help.
