Chapter 108: Chapter 108: Spoils of War, the Famous Blade Kogarashi
Kuzan listened to Yoriichi's words and nodded gravely. He had already experienced Golden Lion Shiki's strength firsthand. Not only was Shiki's Haki exceptionally powerful, his battle experience was equally formidable. In their brief aerial clash, Kuzan had been completely outmatched.
If Yoriichi hadn't intervened and forced Shiki to defend, Kuzan might have already suffered a devastating blow.
The two men turned toward the direction where Shiki had been blasted away. When his body was hurled through the sky, it had smashed through countless walls. Now, the air was thick with floating sawdust and dust, obscuring their vision.
Their Observation Haki spread out instantly. Within a few hundred meters, they both sensed a vicious and overwhelming presence. Their eyes met with unspoken understanding—each man's face grew even more serious.
Meanwhile, Shanks, who had been knocked over by the shockwave from the earlier clash, staggered to his feet. He stared in awe at the massive hundred-meter crater in the distance.
After shooting one last glance at Yoriichi and Kuzan, Shanks immediately ducked back behind the wall, grabbing Buggy and slipping away as fast as they could.
Having seen Yoriichi and Kuzan's terrifying power with his own eyes, any intention Shanks had of "helping" the Marines was long gone.
He knew he had no place in this kind of battle, not even as a spectator.
As Shanks and Buggy disappeared, Yoriichi sensed Shiki's aura surging toward them again. The golden lion was flying back fast.
"Kuzan, I'll take the lead. Cover me," Yoriichi said calmly, gripping his sword with both hands and raising it in front of his chest. His Observation Haki locked on to Shiki's position.
"He's coming!"
In the next instant, a black shadow shot out from the hole in the wall, hurtling straight toward Yoriichi. Shiki flew low across the ground, both blades swinging toward Yoriichi's chest.
Clang!!!
Yoriichi blocked the twin blades with his katana, but within less than a second, the overwhelming force pushed him backward through the air like a ragdoll.
That high-speed aerial charge had given Shiki's slash a massive boost in power.
Boom!!!
Yoriichi crashed to the ground, and the impact's backlash nearly knocked the wind out of him. A sharp pain pulsed through his body, twisting his expression with agony.
This attack had far surpassed Shiki's earlier mid-air slash. It had pierced through Yoriichi's Armament Haki, delivering real damage.
"Yoriichi!"
Kuzan called out anxiously. His concern was genuine, but his guard remained up. His body began to elementally transform on instinct.
This time, instead of turning into mist, Kuzan used his powers to instantly freeze the ground beneath him. Jagged ice spikes erupted from the earth, spreading rapidly toward Shiki.
Shiki, his golden hair flaring in all directions, glared down at the fallen Yoriichi with a savage expression. A deep, thirty-centimeter gash stretched across his chest, blood gushing out and staining his golden kimono crimson.
Yet he seemed utterly unfazed by the pain.
As Kuzan's attack closed in, Shiki casually slashed twice, cutting through the approaching ice spikes. He floated in midair, feet never touching the ground.
Kuzan's ability hadn't affected him at all.
Still, within moments, the battlefield was encircled by towering ice walls. As the clash intensified, the surrounding civilians had already evacuated.
Anyone living in the New World knew how to survive. Most residents had begun fleeing the moment the tavern fell.
Now, within the hundred-meter radius enclosed by Kuzan's ice, there was no one left—just the three of them.
Ice spikes shot up rapidly, transforming the area into a frozen landscape in mere seconds. Then, Kuzan himself vanished into the vast white wasteland.
"Devil Fruit powers, huh?"
"I might not be able to locate you directly, but the moment you attack, my Observation Haki will reveal your position."
"This kind of ability is useless against me."
"You really think something like this could trap me?"
Shiki scanned the icy battlefield. He couldn't find Kuzan. Yoriichi, after taking that hit, had also slipped out of sight. Even with Haki, he couldn't detect either of them.
Despite his confident tone, a deep unease welled up in Shiki's heart.
He didn't know why, but it felt like something was wrong.
That anxiety stemmed from the unknown, the sudden failure of his Observation Haki.
"That red-haired brat is suspicious," he muttered.
"This isn't good. I can't fight them like this."
As he stood alone, chest burning from the pain, Shiki came to a realization. These two Marines were not amateurs he could toy with.
If he let his guard down, it wouldn't just be his chest that suffered.
Determined to escape, Shiki began rising higher into the sky. But just then, countless sharp icicles burst from the surrounding spikes and shot toward him.
Most of them aimed at his head, meant to cut off his escape.
"Tch. This level of-"
Shiki sneered. He raised his twin blades and slashed upward. The icicles shattered instantly, falling like glittering snowflakes. Sunlight caught on the ice fragments, scattering rainbow-like colors across the sky.
But as Shiki prepared to ascend, a white figure appeared above him.
The falling ice condensed into Kuzan's upper body. He materialized midair and swung a massive ice blade down on Shiki.
"Smart attack," Shiki growled. "But now you've exposed yourself!"
With a fierce gleam in his eye, Shiki lifted Oto and blocked Kuzan's strike with his left blade. At the same time, he swung Kogarashi with his right, aiming straight for Kuzan's chest.
Kuzan didn't dodge.
He stared Shiki down with unwavering resolve, holding firm against the downward strike. His face was calm, even solemn.
"This bastard's got a death wish!"
Just as Shiki's sword was about to cleave into Kuzan, a black flash accompanied by a thunderclap streaked down from the side.
It slashed across Shiki's right arm.
Kogarashi struck Kuzan's chest, but the blade carried no Armament Haki.
Blood sprayed into the air. Shiki's forearm, still clutching Kogarashi tumbled toward the icy ground.
Only then did Shiki realize what had happened.
At his side, a red-haired youth had appeared from nowhere.
Yoriichi had returned.
The long blade in his hand, fresh from severing Shiki's arm, swung again, this time aiming for Shiki's neck.
"Damn you, brat!!"
Shiki's pupils shrank. His body lost lift and dropped like a stone. He ducked just in time, and the blade whooshed past his head—shaving off a large chunk of the rudder embedded in his skull.
Having dodged the fatal blow, Shiki shot upward, bursting through Kuzan's icy dome and rising into the open sky.
Midair, he glanced at his severed arm.
He gritted his teeth and disappeared.
But his voice echoed down from above:
"I won't forget this!"
"I'll find your families, your friends, all of them! I'll capture them one by one and kill them in front of you!"
"Remember this, Marines!"
