Chapter 3: Chapter 3: Death Match
As he climbed the stage, the surrounding guards burst into cheers. Clearly, they were looking forward to this match.
"Place your bets! Odds are 1:1 if Number 38 kills Number 55 within one minute! 1:3 if it's within three minutes! 1:5 if within five minutes! And 1:10 if he takes longer than five minutes!" a guard shouted out the moment Rikuya stepped onto the stage.
Right after he spoke, the other guards eagerly pulled out their wallets and began placing their bets.
"1,000 Berries on Number 38 killing him in under a minute!"
"3,000 Berries, within three minutes!"
"5,000 Berries says he takes more than five!"
"Excuse me, what are the odds if Number 55 kills Number 38?" a discordant voice suddenly rang out, silencing the entire area.
Everyone turned to look at Rikuya, who stood on the platform with a calm smile on his face.
"Kid, are you tired of living?" Number 38 snarled from the opposite side, clearly enraged by Rikuya's provocations.
"Why do you say that? Why can you kill me but I can't kill you? We're here to fight—it's all about ability, right?" Rikuya replied casually.
"Hmph. Seems you're a little too confident in yourself. But even if I opened betting for that outcome, you don't have the money to place a bet! Ha!" sneered the betting guard.
"That's a shame. I was hoping to win a little cash to spend once I get out of here," Rikuya said with mock regret.
"This guy must be crazy. He really thinks he's getting out? What a clown, this Number 55 is hilarious!"
"Too bad he had to go up against Number 38."
The guards laughed among themselves.
"I can lend you some money. How much do you need?"
A deep voice suddenly rang out from the second floor.
Rikuya looked up and saw Saldeath grinning down at him.
"It doesn't matter. Lend me as much as you want. If I lose, I'll be dead anyway."
"Ha! Good! Hey, do you have a bet open for Number 55 killing Number 38?" Saldeath asked the guard.
"Yes! Odds are 1:500!" the guard quickly replied.
"Then place 10,000 Berries on it for me," said Saldeath.
The room instantly erupted into chaos.
This was the first time Saldeath had ever placed a bet. He usually just watched in silence, but now he'd not only bet—he'd bet on something outrageous.
"Hmph. I'll tear you to pieces," Number 38 growled menacingly.
Rikuya didn't respond. Instead, he activated his system inventory with a thought and selected the Might Guy character.
Ding. Host has successfully used the Might Guy character card. Possession count -1.
A powerful force suddenly surged into Rikuya's body.
In the next moment, a series of taijutsu techniques rapidly flashed through his mind—Leaf Hurricane, Leaf Strong Whirlwind, Leaf Body Flicker, Dynamic Entry, Eight Gates... all of them instantly etched into his memory.
"Now this is getting interesting," Rikuya said with a smile, feeling the changes in his body.
"You two, prepare yourselves. I now declare today's death match officially underway!" a guard at the edge of the arena shouted.
Ding!
A bell rang out, signaling the start of the fight.
Number 38 immediately charged toward Rikuya with bloodlust in his eyes.
But Rikuya stood calmly, waiting.
"Die!" Number 38 roared as he lunged forward, swinging a powerful punch at Rikuya's head.
At that moment, Rikuya finally moved.
"Leaf Hurricane!"
With lightning speed, he launched a kick directly at Number 38's chin.
Just as Number 38's fist was about to make contact with Rikuya's face, his arm froze in place.
Rikuya's right foot had already slammed into his opponent's jaw.
Boom!
A dull thud echoed as Number 38 was launched into the air before crashing violently back onto the platform.
The entire arena fell into stunned silence.
Everyone stared, wide-eyed, as if unable to believe what had just happened.
Blood trickled from Number 38's mouth as he lay motionless on the ground.
The experienced guards knew at a glance—he was dead.
Even Saldeath, watching from the second floor, furrowed his brows.
Clearly, he hadn't expected Rikuya to strike with such overwhelming force.
Number 38 had been the floor's most notorious killer, but against Rikuya, he hadn't even gotten a chance to retaliate.
This might mean Rikuya's classification needed to be re-evaluated.
If his strength rating was revised, he could end up transferred to one of the lower, more dangerous levels of the prison.
Ding. Congratulations, Host. You have defeated your opponent and earned 500 Reputation Points.
Seeing that he had gained 500 points just from killing a single Level One inmate, Rikuya couldn't help but feel ecstatic.
Earlier, he had been worried about how hard it would be to collect the tens or hundreds of thousands of points needed for strong character cards.
But now, it seemed like earning Reputation wasn't that difficult after all.
Still, being imprisoned in Impel Down meant he had no freedom. His top priority now was to escape.
"Kid, looks like you've got some skills after all. Consider yourself lucky today. Restrain him again—shackles on his wrists and ankles. And post two Blue Gorillas to watch him personally!"
"Hey, Saldeath, don't forget something. You said you'd lend me 10,000 Berries. Based on those odds, I should now be owed five million. Where's my money?"
