Following the Marine triumph at Carocal Island, news spread like wildfire. Newspapers big and small hit the stands, trumpeting the Navy's victory.
However, not all headlines sang praises. Some questioned whether the Marines had simply swooped in at the end to steal credit for someone else's work.
And at the center of that storm, as the most talked-about figure in the battle, was Cross. Naturally, he had attracted the attention of many eyes, both within the Navy and beyond.
The chaos he had stirred up was simply too great to cover up. Especially in Skoggy, the "City of Sculpture," where countless statues and carvings had seemingly come to life and run amok.
Such a phenomenon could hardly be concealed, it drew agents and informants from every corner of the seas.
...
New World, Totto Land.
On Whole Cake Island, deep within a massive cake-shaped castle, the upper ranks of the Big Mom Pirates had gathered. The celebration from a recent victory was still in full swing.
In the battle on Cullen Island, the Big Mom Pirates had easily crushed the ten-thousand-strong Impaler Pirates, once again asserting their dominance as rulers of the New World.
The overwhelming power they displayed in that battle sent shivers through the spines of countless pirates. None dared look their way.
Suddenly, a pirate burst into the grand hall, waving the latest issue of the World Economy News.
"Mama! The Navy wiped out the Impaler Pirates!!"
The unexpected news quickly silenced the raucous feast. Eyes turned in unison toward the massive throne at the end of the hall.
"Oh?" A deep voice rumbled. "So that fool Uren is dead?"
The woman seated on the throne shifted her mountainous frame, her gem-studded fingers reaching out to take the paper. She scanned the front page, her expression unreadable.
She was enormous, nearly the size of a giant, with thick lipstick, lavender eyeshadow, and flowing pink hair. A pirate hat adorned her head, and she wore a loose-fitting pink dress with matching crimson heels.
Charlotte Linlin, aka Big Mom, Captain of the Big Mom Pirates, Queen of Totto Land, and one of the Emperors who ruled the New World.
"Mamamamama~"
After a brief chuckle, she muttered, "That idiot Uren. If only he had taken my offer seriously... he wouldn't have ended up dying at the hands of the Navy."
She narrowed her eyes, a shadow passing through them.
"But it seems the Navy got their hands on a rather interesting Devil Fruit... One that brings lifeless things to life. Soldiers with no fear of death. Quite similar to my Homies, wouldn't you say?"
Her voice dropped an octave as she barked, "Perospero!"
"At your service, Mama! Perorin~!"
From the crowd stepped a tall, lean man with a pointed face and exaggerated makeup. His long tongue dangled to his chest, and he had shoulder-length, deep blue hair with light blue tips. A candy-covered top hat perched on his head, and he wore a long yellow coat with an oversized collar. In his hand was a candy cane-shaped staff, part lollipop, part cane.
Charlotte Perospero, eldest son of Big Mom and the Candy Minister of Totto Land.
"Look into this man."
Big Mom tossed the newspaper to him, her voice low and dangerous.
"There's a new name in the Marines. He played a key role in wiping out the Impaler Pirates. I want everything on him, every detail."
"No problem, Mama. Perorin~!"
Perospero nodded, smiling wickedly as he took the paper.
...
Paradise, First Half of the Grand Line.
Marineford, Marine Headquarters.
Six warships slowly pulled into port, occupying the empty berths. On the deck of one vessel, Cross stood at the rail, observing the port, lined with rows of ships, towering cannons, and coastal fortifications.
But the true colossus stood before him: the main fortress of Marine Headquarters, towering like a mountain in the heart of Marineford. The front face bore a massive "海軍" kanji with the Marines symbol in between, a bastion of justice recognized across the world.
Cross had read that Marineford was more than just a military base. Behind the fortress lay entire towns where Navy families lived, along with schools and training academies for new recruits.
"Ne~, we finally made it!"
Borsalino stepped up to the rail, squinting toward the top of the fortress. "Really hoping Fleet Admiral Kong gives me some time off this time…"
Right behind him, Kuzan walked over with his usual sleepy demeanor. Stretching lazily, he yawned and replied in a drawl,
"Arara~ I wouldn't count on it. The seas are way too unstable right now. Can't imagine the Fleet Admiral letting someone like you just go on vacation."
"That's what makes this a real pain," Borsalino muttered with a long face. "Just thinking about dealing with all those monsters in the New World gives me the chills!"
"Oi, oi, oi—"
Cross couldn't help but interject, unable to stand their lack of enthusiasm.
"Vice Admirals, could you at least pretend to be motivated? Seeing you two like this is giving us rookies a really bad impression!"
"Ne~, Cross-kun, you sure are full of energy~" Borsalino replied, lips puckered around a cigarette. He grinned nonchalantly.
"Having spirit is good," Kuzan added with a slow yawn. "I like that about you… yawn~."
"Gee, thanks," Cross said flatly, deadpan as he stared at the two in disbelief.
One was obsessed with vacation, pay raises, and slacking off.
The other couldn't stop yawning and napping.
The thought that these two would one day become Admirals made Cross seriously question the future of the Navy.
…No.
That had to be a misconception.
Because regardless of their lazy personas, these men did possess monstrous strength.
The former could casually say "that's scary" while kicking a Supernova into the dirt.
The latter could freeze an entire ocean and turn it into a path walked by mortals for seven days straight.
So yes, monsters, the both of them. Their strength was undeniable.
