Chapter 313: 312-Is this really a spar?
A heavy silence fell over the battlefield as Renjiro's eyes locked onto Riku. The mist that lingered from their earlier clash swirled lazily in the air, shrouding the scene in an eerie veil. Riku's calm demeanour contrasted sharply with the tension crackling in the atmosphere. He stood tall, his posture relaxed yet commanding, a faint smirk tugging at the corners of his mouth.
"Hiro?" Renjiro asked cautiously, his voice low but edged with suspicion.
Riku answered simply, "He's out."
Renjiro's brows furrowed. "So it's just the two of us remaining," he said, though there was no response from Riku. The older shinobi's silence was more telling than words, and it made Renjiro's stomach knot with unease.
'Shit!' Renjiro cursed inwardly. This was far from the ideal scenario. His earlier fight against Aiko had drained him more than he had hoped. Halfway through their clash, he had been forced to abandon his psychological tactics when Aiko unleashed her strange jutsu, one that still left lingering effects on his chakra network. His body wasn't in the shape he had envisioned for this inevitable clash with Riku.
'Now that I think about it,' Renjiro thought bitterly, 'this was a poorly arranged fight. How am I supposed to know if he's telling the truth?' Riku's words about Hiro's elimination gnawed at him. There was no way to confirm their validity other than to take them at face value. The uncertainty left Renjiro questioning every aspect of his strategy.
Riku, noticing Renjiro's momentary distraction, made the first move. With a deft hand sign, he unleashed Water Release: Hidden Mist Technique. The battlefield was quickly engulfed in thick mist, a suffocating blanket that reduced visibility to near zero. The dense fog rolled in with unnatural speed, swallowing the surroundings like a living entity.
'I don't need to get caught up in this'
Aiko thought as she got to her feet and flickered away. She was already out, so she decided to be a spectator of this clash.
Renjiro didn't move. His Sharingan flared to life, but even its heightened perception struggled against the deceptive haze.
This was because as a senju, Riku had been taught how to fight the Uchiha, so even most of his jutsus, were geared towards that, albeit to a lower extent.
Riku didn't stop with the mist. Almost simultaneously, he activated Earth Release: Earth Flow Waves, manipulating the terrain beneath them. The ground shifted violently, rising in unpredictable waves that threw the already unstable terrain into chaos. The earth churned, forcing Renjiro to adjust his footing constantly.
"Still standing?" Riku murmured, more to himself than to Renjiro. He wasn't done yet. With precise control, he summoned a massive Water Dragon Bullet, the serpentine beast materializing within the mist with an audible roar. The dragon surged forward, its form winding and crashing through the fog, targeting Renjiro with calculated precision. The force of the water dragon alone was enough to obliterate defences and send its target tumbling.
Renjiro closed his eyes briefly, focusing on his chakra. His chakra field expanded, allowing him to sense the flow of chakra around him. Pinpointing Riku's location, he activated his Sharingan, honing in on his opponent's chakra signature. Though the mist obscured much, Renjiro's heightened awareness gave him an edge.
'He's not going to make this easy,' Renjiro thought.
Renjiro formed a series of hand signs with practiced speed.
"Fire Release: Phoenix Fire Technique!"
A barrage of small, concentrated fireballs erupted from his mouth, shooting into the mist. The flames danced through the haze, their heat distorting the air and providing Renjiro with subtle sensory clues about Riku's position. The fireballs served a dual purpose: flushing out his hidden opponent and destabilizing the oppressive mist.
As the ground beneath him shifted violently, Renjiro felt the terrain threaten to unbalance him.
But his training kicked in.
Focusing chakra into his feet, he rooted himself firmly to the earth. His body moved instinctively, reacting to the unstable ground with precision born of countless hours of gruelling practice.
With a sharp motion, Renjiro formed new hand signs.
"Wind Release: Gale Palm!" A powerful gust of wind surged forth, stabilizing his footing and clearing a small radius of the mist. The brief reprieve allowed him to assess his surroundings better.
A deafening roar pulled his attention. The massive water dragon was barreling toward him, its jaws open wide and shimmering with chakra-infused liquid. Renjiro's mind raced. His dual chakra nature of wind and fire gave him options, but this wasn't an attack he could face head-on.
"Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique!"
Renjiro's voice cut through the chaos as he unleashed a massive sphere of flames. The fireball streaked toward the water dragon, targeting its head with blistering heat. Simultaneously, Renjiro channeled wind chakra into a pressure wave.
"Wind Release: Pressure Damage!"
The resulting gust enhanced the fire's intensity, creating a devastating combination aimed at neutralizing the water dragon.
From within the mist, Riku observed the counterattack. His sharp eyes followed the trajectory of the fireball and wind wave. 'He's quick to adapt,' Riku thought.
But he was quicker.
"Water Release: Great Flood Wave!"
Riku slammed his hands to the ground, summoning a colossal wave of water. The surge crashed against Renjiro's fireball and wind release, its overwhelming force absorbing and dissipating the combined attack. The water dragon, though weakened, pressed on, its serpentine body weaving erratically to avoid further countermeasures.
Renjiro gritted his teeth, frustration bubbling beneath his calm exterior. He couldn't match Riku's raw power head-on. 'If I keep this up, I'll burn out before I can make a dent.'
Riku had deeper chakra reserves than Renjiro, he was a Senju after all. And the fact that Renjiro's chakra network and chakra were messed up by Aiko was not helping at all.
With a deep breath, Renjiro made a decision. He opened the Eight Gates, stopping at the Gate of Limit. An overwhelming surge of energy coursed through his body, his chakra intensifying to near-unbearable levels. His muscles bulged, and his movements became a blur. The air around him crackled with raw power, and his Sharingan evolved, its tomoe spinning to reveal a fourth.
The battlefield seemed to slow as Renjiro lunged forward, his speed blinding. His punches carried the weight of his enhanced state, each strike aimed with surgical precision.
The first blow landed squarely on Riku's ribs, the second aimed at his head, and the third toward his abdomen. Riku barely managed to block the strikes, his defences straining under the relentless assault.
Riku felt the pressure mounting.
'This isn't the Renjiro I trained,' he thought, both impressed and alarmed. 'Is this really a thirteen-year-old boy? Or has a monster possessed his body?'
Despite the chaos, Riku couldn't help but admire Renjiro's battle instincts and raw potential. 'If he keeps growing like this, he'll surpass even the Sannin.'
Renjiro, meanwhile, was seething. 'Why didn't he show this level of strength before?' he wondered, his strikes growing fiercer.
'If he had, I wouldn't have thought this fight would be easier.'
Sensing the tide turning, Riku flooded the area with a Water Release: Raging Torrent.
The ground beneath them transformed into a churning river, the water swirling around them with terrifying speed. The unstable footing forced Renjiro to slow, his movements hindered by the turbulent current.
"You're good," Riku admitted, his voice steady despite the onslaught. "But you're reckless."
Renjiro snarled, refusing to back down. He channelled wind chakra into his strikes, creating enhanced Gale Slashes that cut through the water with sharp precision.
But Riku anticipated his moves, summoning stone pillars from the earth to intercept the attacks. The mudslides and rising terrain added another layer of complexity to the already chaotic battlefield.
Their clash reached a fever pitch, each shinobi pushing themselves to their limits. Renjiro's relentless assault tested Riku's defenses, while Riku's mastery over the terrain kept Renjiro on edge. The ground quaked under their feet, the air thick with chakra and the sounds of jutsu colliding.
Aiko watched from a distance, her mouth agape. The sheer scale of the battle left her speechless. She had always known Riku held back during their missions as their Jōnin sensei, and Renjiro often restrained himself as well. But this? This was on a completely different level.
"Is this really a spar?" she whispered, her voice trembling as the intensity of the battle left her awestruck.
