Chapter 312: 311-Sneak Attack
Aiko's eyes narrowed, watching every movement Renjiro made with the precision of a seasoned shinobi. He was still strong, his stamina seemingly unyielding, but she had trained with him long enough to notice the subtle signs of fatigue creeping into his movements.
'He's starting to get comfortable,' Aiko thought, her lips curling into a small, knowing smile. 'Good. Let's see how he handles this.'
Renjiro was charging toward her now, chakra surging through his body as the air around him shimmered with heat. She could see the telltale signs of his Fire Style: Fireball Jutsu building in his chest, the orange glow reflecting off the sweat on his forehead. The flames in his mouth promised devastation, and most would have fled or sought cover. But Aiko stood her ground, her hands already forming a sequence of hand signs with practised precision.
Renjiro's Sharingan flared as he tracked her movements. 'Is she insane?' he wondered. 'There's no way she can tank this...' His doubt didn't slow him, however, and as the flames roared to life, he expelled them with a guttural shout. "Katon: Gōkakyū no Jutsu!"
Aiko's response was swift and unexpected. Instead of dodging or countering with a traditional defence, she stepped forward, closing the gap between them. Her hands shimmered with chakra, and at the last possible moment, she raised them to meet Renjiro's chest. Her palms glowed a fiery red, the chakra within them taking on a strange, almost menacing intensity.
The moment her hands made contact, Renjiro's eyes widened in shock. The fireball he had summoned dissipated harmlessly into the air, his chakra seemingly cut off mid-flow. A burning sensation erupted in his chest, not on the surface but deep within his body, as though his very chakra network was being set ablaze.
"This is Chūkū no Michi" Aiko explained calmly, her voice steady and unyielding. "A jutsu I developed to disrupt the chakra flow, akin to medical ninjutsu but in reverse, designed for damage. The fire chakra I use interferes with your circulation, slowing your body's natural healing and regeneration."
Renjiro stumbled back, his hand clutching his chest as the sensation spread through his body. It wasn't like any injury he'd experienced before. His chakra, which normally flowed like a raging river, now felt sluggish, as if weighed down by invisible chains which was ironic.
'What... What is this?*' he thought, alarmed. 'My chakra flow is sluggish... this isn't just regular fire chakra.'
He leapt backwards, putting distance between himself and Aiko, but the sensation lingered. The ache in his chakra network felt like a dull thrum, weakening his ability to channel energy with precision. His breathing was steady but laboured, and for the first time in the fight, uncertainty flickered in his Sharingan.
"What did you do?" Renjiro asked, his voice tight, almost accusatory. "This isn't like any jutsu I've seen. My chakra's not responding the way it should."
Aiko's smirk deepened, but her eyes remained sharp. "You're resourceful," she said. "I'm sure you'll figure it out. But I'll give you a hint: brute force won't work."
Renjiro's mind raced as he assessed the situation. This wasn't an ordinary attack. It felt like a curse jutsu, something akin to Juinjutsu, but there were no visible marks. He had trained to build up a resistance most most chakra-disrupting techniques, yet this felt different. The disruption was too precise, too targeted.
For a brief moment, Renjiro considered activating his Mangekyō Sharingan. Perhaps his green flames could neutralize whatever Aiko had done to him. But he hesitated. The Mangekyō was a double-edged sword. Using it now, without fully understanding the situation, might cost him more than it would gain.
'No,' he decided. 'I'll find another way. This isn't over yet.'
Aiko watched him closely, her smirk softening into a look of quiet confidence. She could see the gears turning in his mind, the way he was recalibrating his strategy. But she also knew she had the upper hand, at least for now.
'He's second-guessing himself,' she thought. 'Good. That's all I need.'
Renjiro steadied his breathing, focusing on the rhythm of his chakra. He couldn't brute-force his way through this, but he could adapt. His Sharingan spun as he studied Aiko, analyzing every movement, every subtle shift in her stance.
"You've put me on the defensive," he admitted, his tone calm but edged with determination. "But don't get comfortable. This fight is far from over."
Without waiting for a response, Renjiro surged forward, his staff glowing with chakra as he swung it in a wide arc. Aiko dodged, her movements fluid and precise.
"You're fast," Aiko said, her voice tinged with amusement. "But not fast enough."
She countered with a flurry of kunai, each one tipped with an explosive tag. The projectiles whistled through the air, forcing Renjiro to leap back as they detonated with deafening booms, shaking the forest floor. Smoke and debris filled the air, obscuring Aiko from view.
Renjiro landed lightly on his feet, his Sharingan scanning through the haze. He could sense her chakra, feel the faint tremors of her movements. She was circling him, looking for another opening.
'She's trying to keep me off-balance,' he realized. 'But I can use that against her.'
He formed a quick sequence of hand seals, his chakra surging as he activated Wind Style: Gale Palm. A powerful gust of wind erupted from his hands, clearing the smoke and forcing Aiko to reveal herself. She skidded to a stop, her hair whipping around her face as the wind died down.
"Not bad," she said, her voice steady. "But I'm not done yet."
Before Renjiro could respond, Aiko charged forward, her hands glowing with fire chakra once again. She aimed for his chest, but this time, Renjiro was ready. He sidestepped her attack, his movements fluid and precise, and countered with a swift strike of his staff. The weapon connected sending Aiko stumbling back.
"You're persistent," Renjiro said, his voice calm but firm. "I'll give you that."
Aiko wiped a trickle of blood from her lip, her eyes blazing with determination. "And you're stubborn," she shot back. "But that won't save you."
The two clashed again, their movements a blur of speed and precision. Renjiro's staff whirled through the air, deflecting Aiko's strikes and forcing her to stay on the defensive. But Aiko was relentless, her attacks growing more aggressive as she pushed him to his limits.
Finally, with a burst of chakra, Renjiro unleashed a powerful Fire Style: Phoenix Sage Fire Jutsu, sending a volley of small fireballs toward Aiko. She dodged most of them, but one grazed her shoulder, singeing her clothing and leaving a wound that slowed her movements. Renjiro pressed the advantage, his staff striking with calculated precision until Aiko was forced to her knees.
As Renjiro stood over her, catching his breath, a triumphant smirk crossed his face. "Looks like this is my win," he said, raising his staff for the final blow.
But before he could act, his instincts screamed a warning. Without hesitation, he flickered backwards several meters just as the ground where he had stood erupted in a fiery explosion. The deafening boom rattled the trees, and a cloud of smoke and debris filled the air.
Renjiro's eyes darted toward the origin of the attack. A figure emerged from the shadows, their silhouette sharp and imposing. "I never thought you were one for sneak attacks, Riku-sensei," Renjiro said, his voice calm but edged with tension.
