Chapter 93: Chapter 93: A Being That Shouldn’t Exist
Neji walked forward, his face expressionless. As he passed by Kabuto, he suddenly threw a heavy punch straight into Kabuto's gut.
"The host has engaged in combat with Yakushi Kabuto. Reward: Edo Tensei acquired."
Edo Tensei (Reanimation Jutsu): A forbidden technique developed by the Second Hokage. This jutsu can summon the souls of deceased shinobi back to the world of the living, reviving them in physical form. The revived individuals can be controlled by the caster, though the caster also retains the option to release them.
"It actually worked…"
Neji's body tensed ever so slightly. He had only been guessing. Orochimaru might have passed on an incomplete version of Reanimation to Kabuto, and on a whim, Neji decided to test it. He hadn't expected it to succeed.
"Edo Tensei, huh…" Neji pondered. Maybe it was time to consider a new line of work grave-digging. After all, this technique was powerful enough to rapidly build a formidable force, if used properly.
"No... never mind." He dismissed the idea just as quickly. The risks were too high. If the resurrected ever learned that the binding seal could be undone, allowing them to break free from control, the situation could spiral out of hand.
Madara was right some jutsu are forbidden for a reason. It's safest to wait until he's strong enough to control it without worry.
Unlike Neji, who was quietly thrilled, Kabuto doubled over in pain, bile rising to his throat. His face contorted with shock and rage as he looked at Neji.
"Why...?"
Kabuto was fuming inside. He hadn't done anything. Why did he have to suffer such an unprovoked attack? The killing intent he had just extinguished flared up again this time even stronger.
"Ah, sorry, my hand slipped," Neji said offhandedly, not even bothering to explain himself. In truth, he was filled with regret. Had he aimed for Kabuto's chest instead, he might have scored a better reward. What a waste… a total miscalculation.
His casual attitude only made Kabuto more furious. It felt like Neji wasn't hitting a person, but a pet. Honestly, if Kabuto wasn't sure he'd lose, he would've tried to kill Neji on the spot.
Of course, Neji wasn't blind to the murderous intent directed at him. He scoffed inwardly. And she thinks he's the problem? She's the one who insisted on using a female body for Living Corpse Reincarnation. What does that have to do with him?
If Kabuto could read Neji's thoughts, she would've screamed injustice. It wasn't like she wanted to use a woman's body there were simply no other options.
What she didn't know was that because she'd learned an incomplete version of Living Corpse Reincarnation, her current body was now permanent. Even if she mastered the full technique later, she'd never be able to switch back.
"All right, Kabuto, take Neji down to rest," Orochimaru said, stepping in to defuse the tension.
Since Orochimaru had spoken, Kabuto had no choice but to obey. She pushed down her fury, bowed slightly, and led Neji away.
But deep down, she vowed one day, she'd make him pay for this humiliation.
"Oh, right. From this moment on, I'll be moving in the shadows. Don't mention me to anyone. As for Sasuke…" Neji paused at the mouth of the cave and turned back, voice low and cold. "Your talent for child trafficking is quite impressive."
He had to admit, to brainwash that many people into practically worshiping him Orochimaru's charisma could almost rival the Will of Fire.
"Hmph. Like master, like student," Neji muttered under his breath.
Orochimaru's eyes narrowed. Neji's words were clear don't come looking for me. He wasn't going to get involved in whatever mess Orochimaru was brewing with the Akatsuki, the Sand Village, or the Leaf.
"Annoying… as expected of you, Neji. Always a difficult pawn to use. Fine. Let's see how far you can go with your little gust of wind."
Orochimaru's brows furrowed, then relaxed. He nodded slightly at Neji.
"Smart man," Neji said approvingly, then turned to Kabuto and ordered, "Lead the way."
"I…" Kabuto nearly snapped. Did this guy not have the slightest sense of what it meant to be a guest? Did he not realize who the real master of this place was?
"Hmm?" Neji glanced at her, and she immediately backed down. With a deep breath, she turned to lead him through the tunnel.
The cave was pitch black, lit only by a few flickering torches mounted on the walls. Their shadows stretched long and warped. The place was cold, lifeless, and heavy with a damp, eerie silence.
Neji frowned and murmured to himself, "No wonder everyone here turns out a little twisted…"
"This is your room," Kabuto said curtly. She tossed out the words like they were garbage and turned to leave. She couldn't stand the sight of his face any longer.
But just then, something unexpected happened.
Neji placed a hand on Kabuto's head and said softly, "Good girl~."
"The host has performed a head-pat on Yakushi Kabuto. Reward: Temple of Nirvana Technique acquired."
Temple of Nirvana Technique: A genjutsu that causes anyone who sees the descending white feathers to fall into a deep, peaceful sleep. It has an extremely wide range of effect.
"Huh, that's the illusion Kabuto used during the Konoha Crush. Pretty useless though."
Among all the genjutsu Neji knew, this one ranked near the bottom. Kakashi and Guy had dispelled it almost instantly. Even Shikamaru and Sakura at that time could resist it. Clearly not a high-tier technique.
"AAAAAHHHHH!"
Kabuto let out a piercing scream. Her eyes burned with fury. Neji what the hell was he doing?!
Good girl?
Seriously?! Was he petting her like some kind of cat? Did he think she was a pet? This was humiliating blatant, outrageous humiliation!
Light-blue chakra surged around her body. She was seething ready to strike, even knowing she'd lose.
Unlike Orochimaru, the incomplete Living Corpse Reincarnation had begun to subtly affect Kabuto's personality, making her increasingly feminine.
She snapped.
A punch flew toward Neji. But from his perspective, it looked more like one of those playful, half-hearted taps like a girl sulking and pounding her fists on your chest.
He stood still, easily catching her fist. With a casual flick of his arm, he tossed her across the room.
"The host has held hands with Yakushi Kabuto. Reward: Summoning Technique (Second-Generation Manda) acquired."
"What?!"
Neji froze.
Second-Generation Manda? That shouldn't be possible!
The second Manda was a clone created from the original's cells born with limbs and far stronger. It could even wrap itself around the massive island turtle of the Lightning Country.
But in this timeline, it shouldn't exist yet.
"You bastard!" Kabuto roared, her voice breaking into a clearly feminine tone high, crisp, and furious. Her carefully maintained male façade had completely shattered.
"I don't have time for this. And don't forget bring me every single jutsu Orochimaru has ever created," Neji said with a wave, disappearing into the room behind him, leaving Kabuto's furious screams echoing in the corridor.
