Naruto Birdcage

Chapter 339: Ch 339 : The Power of Time

Makoto expanded his sensory abilities and quickly detected several familiar chakra signatures.

And this familiarity came from the world he had recently visited—the most strikingly recognizable being Uzumaki Naruto.

Makoto carefully studied the faces of Haruno Sakura and Yamanaka Ino.

Though they had grown into adults, they didn't seem as mature as the Hinata he had encountered earlier.

Perhaps this was still the same world, but at a different point in time.

"Are you okay?" Haruno Sakura asked again.

"I'm fine," Makoto responded.

"I see, that's good." Haruno Sakura smiled.

As Makoto stood up from the ground, both Sakura and Ino were surprised to notice that the dust and dried leaves clinging to his clothes fell off effortlessly as he rose.

This dust-repelling technique was something neither of them had ever seen before.

"Are you a ninja from the village?" The two exchanged a glance before Ino also spoke up.

"Yeah."

"Really? I'm a Jonin from the village, but I don't think I've ever seen you before." Haruno Sakura smiled, though there was a hint of caution and probing in her tone.

Makoto had already sensed the vigilance in her words, but he paid it no mind.

"Have you married Sasuke?"

"Eh?"

The sudden change in topic left both Haruno Sakura and Yamanaka Ino momentarily stunned.

"You... know me?"

"I'm a friend of Sasuke's."

Sasuke's... friend?

Sakura and Ino both showed doubtful expressions.

Did Sasuke... have a friend they didn't know about?

And if he was really a friend, why not introduce himself directly?

Suddenly, Makoto sensed something and lifted his head to look at the sky.

What happened next shocked all three of them—the sun, which had been high in the sky, began descending toward the distant mountains at a speed visible to the naked eye.

Then, the moon rapidly rose into the sky, emitting an unusual glow.

But the moon didn't stay in the sky for long either. It soon began to descend as well, and once again, the sun rose.

"This..."

"What's going on..."

Haruno Sakura and Yamanaka Ino were left speechless.

Makoto watched the scene unfold, frowning in silence.

The flow of time had changed, but why?

Suddenly, Sakura raised her hands and formed a hand seal in front of her, thinking she might have fallen into a genjutsu.

However, after multiple attempts, she realized it had no effect.

At that moment, a figure rushed over from the distance.

"Sakura! Ino!"

The person quickly arrived in front of the three—it was Uzumaki Naruto.

"Naruto!"

As Naruto approached, he suddenly stopped in his tracks, lifted his head, and stared at the rapidly alternating sun and moon, his eyes widening in shock.

"How is this happening..." Naruto muttered to himself.

Then, realizing something, he hurriedly spoke to Kurama inside him.

"Kurama, help me break this genjutsu!"

"This isn't a genjutsu," Kurama replied.

The sun had risen and set four times in the span of just a minute or two.

More ninjas soon arrived—a small squad this time.

As they approached, they called out, "Naruto!"

Makoto finally realized something and spoke.

"You should all stay away from me."

The others looked at him in confusion.

Makoto said to Naruto, "Naruto, take everyone and leave now."

But Naruto asked, "What do you mean? Who are you?"

Makoto replied, "There's no time to explain. I'm a friend of Sasuke's. Just take those Anbu and leave."

A friend of Sasuke's?

Naruto looked surprised.

Since when did Sasuke have a friend that he didn't know about?

After a brief moment of thought, Makoto said, "Your and Sasuke's first kiss—wasn't it with each other?"

Naruto: "!!!"

Sakura: "..."

Ino: "..."

"Now do you believe me?"

After a short moment of consideration, Naruto waved his hand, signaling the approaching Anbu to retreat.

Sakura and Ino were about to leave with them, but Makoto added, "Can one of you stay?"

Sakura asked, "Who exactly are you? If you're a ninja from the village, why have we never seen you before?"

Makoto, however, simply pointed to the sky. "Time is moving much faster now—one full day is passing in less than a minute. Naruto, was it like this before you got here?"

Naruto slowly shook his head. "Sakura and Ino have been missing for three days. I came here to look for them."

"Three days?!" Sakura and Ino exclaimed in unison.

"How is that possible? We were just—"

Makoto looked up at the rapidly moving sun in the sky and said, "It's not just three days anymore. Those Anbu were probably sent to look for you too, Naruto. You've also gone missing."

After explaining the situation, Naruto and Ino left the area, while Sakura chose to stay by Makoto's side.

Before Naruto left, Makoto told him that if time returned to normal after they distanced themselves, he should come back for them in a day.

The sun rose and set once again.

Makoto suddenly sensed more than a dozen chakra signatures appearing in the forest.

They were likely Konoha's ninjas, but none of them approached.

Naruto soon returned, accompanied by a white-haired man wearing a mask and a spiky-haired man with an onion-like hairstyle.

"It's been a full day," Naruto said.

Sakura was shocked. "But it's only been a minute!"

The spiky-haired man spoke up. "We investigated. Within a hundred-meter radius, centered around you, time is flowing at a different speed."

It seemed that Konoha had been investigating the phenomenon during this time.

Makoto nodded slightly. "I'm going to move ten meters north. Please continue your investigation to see if the area with the different time flow shifts along with me."

The Sixth Hokage, Kakashi, said, "That's exactly what we were planning to do."

The three of them retreated again while Makoto moved ten meters north with Sakura.

Soon, Naruto and the others returned with their findings—it was confirmed that the area with the altered time flow remained centered around Makoto, maintaining a radius of about a hundred meters.

This result confirmed Makoto's suspicions.

Was his method of time travel flawed? Was this world rejecting him?

Without further delay, Makoto soared into the sky, intending to leave this world.

To his surprise, Naruto followed after him.

"Where are you going?" Naruto called out from behind.

Unlike Makoto, he couldn't fly and had to keep leaping from the ground to keep up.

"Leaving," Makoto answered concisely.

"You said you were Sasuke's friend."

"That was a lie. I don't belong to this world. Stop following me—staying near me for just one day means nearly ten years will pass outside."

Naruto was momentarily stunned, seeming to consider following Makoto's advice and leaving.

Seeing this, Makoto tossed a scroll toward him. "In the future, you will face many powerful enemies. Don't neglect your training—if you don't want to lose your comrades, this is a gift for Konoha."

Naruto reached out and caught the scroll Makoto had thrown to him, slowly descending back to the ground.

He opened the scroll and took a glance.

It was filled with densely packed seals and runes, with a few large characters written beside them:

Sage Imprint.

Meanwhile, Makoto had once again arrived on the moon.

He didn't bother counting how much time had passed—both for himself and the outside world.

As usual, he subdued the approaching Otsutsuki Toneri, activated the giant Tenseigan within the Hamura Shrine, and began constructing a teleportation array.

However, this time, something unexpected happened.

Instead of the usual pitch-black spatial rift, a radiant glow of yellow and white light appeared, gradually enveloping him.

When Makoto could see his surroundings again, he found himself in a space entirely different from the previous seven-colored passage.

The colors around him were still dazzling and vibrant, but now, countless black cubes were floating in the void.

Makoto himself was also floating in this space.

As he gazed at his surroundings, he attempted to sense his soul coordinates.

In an instant, millions of coordinates flooded his mind, nearly causing him to faint.

He quickly cut off the connection before it overwhelmed him.

After a long while, he regained his composure and began contemplating his current situation.

The seven-colored passage he had entered before allowed him to travel to different parallel worlds.

But through a special method, it seemed he had entered different points in time instead.

Then what about this space…?

When he had just tried to search for his own soul coordinates, he had discovered an uncountable number of them—far more than he had ever left behind.

The only possible explanation was that all these coordinates belonged to the same person—just at different points in time.

Take Hinata, for example.

32-year-old Hinata had once traveled to the world where Makoto had been, and he had left a soul coordinate on her.

After Hinata returned to her original world, that coordinate would remain on her soul throughout the rest of her life.

The world he had just visited, where time flowed differently, might still have been Hinata's world—just at an earlier point in time.

Based on Naruto and Sakura's appearances, they had likely just gotten married, or perhaps hadn't even married yet.

But why was his time out of sync with the outside world?

Makoto thought about it carefully and could only come to one conclusion:

He had not actually mastered the correct method of time travel.

He hadn't truly traveled through time just now.

Instead, he had remained within the flow of time but had been projected into that world—which was why he seemed so out of place.

Makoto began carefully investigating everything around him.

Standing at the edge of the circular platform, he realized that his ability to sense anything had been completely suppressed.

There was no trace of natural energy here either.

Through his Tenseigan, Makoto was able to see through the black cubes.

Inside each one, countless points of light flickered.

And these black cubes were everywhere—an endless sea of them.

Parsing everything here completely would take an unfathomable amount of time.

Suddenly, Makoto reached out toward one of the cubes.

He grasped it, but in that instant, he saw his own hand rapidly aging before his eyes.

His once fair and slender fingers withered, the skin sagging and decaying, until only bare bones remained.

Even the bones began to corrode, disintegrating bit by bit.

The transformation happened too fast.

Shocked, Makoto immediately withdrew his hand, realizing that only this hand had been affected—his body remained unharmed.

He stared blankly at his skeletal right hand, replaying the sensation in his mind.

Then, he extended his hand toward the cube once more.

This time, an astonishing scene unfolded—his skeletal hand began regenerating on its own.

Flesh and blood grew back, restoring his hand to its youthful state, as if the entire process had been reversed and played in rewind.

Makoto understood now—time was flowing through his body, just as it had when he arrived in that other world.

He hadn't truly traveled through time; time had traveled through him.

Suddenly, a blue-and-white sphere of light formed in his palm.

In the next moment, a golden beam of energy shot out from it.

Golden Wheel Reincarnation Explosion!

Whoosh!

The golden light, sharp as a blade, pierced through countless black cubes in an instant—tearing through the entire space!

Rumble!

From within the shattered black cubes, an explosion of countless blue light particles burst forth, engulfing Makoto completely. They shone as brilliantly as a celestial river in the night sky.

Makoto felt the space around him begin to tremble, collapse, tear apart, and shrink in on itself.

But in the next instant, the shaking suddenly stopped.

In Makoto's vision, it was as if a paused frame on a television screen—everything had frozen in place.

He gazed at the pitch-black spatial fractures around him.

At last, he could once again sense a familiar soul coordinate.

This time, he did not hesitate.

With a swift motion, he flew directly into one of the fissures.

A brilliant white light instantly engulfed his vision.

Even with his Tenseigan, Makoto experienced a brief moment of blindness.

But when his sight returned, he found himself standing before the giant golden Tenseigan.

This was his original world.

He could feel everything that was familiar!

Makoto extended his palm, and the familiar blue light particles manifested within it.

In the next moment, dozens of pitch-black spatial vortexes appeared around the giant Tenseigan.

From each vortex, a figure stepped out—each one identical to him.

These were versions of himself from different moments within the next hour.

Makoto understood everything now.

There was no need for words between him and himself.

Without hesitation, every version of him turned and re-entered their respective vortexes.

With a simple wave of his hand, Makoto erased all the black vortexes from existence.

Had he… mastered the power of time?

Makoto remained calm as he contemplated this realization.

He ran a sharp line across his palm, drawing blood instantly.

Yet, in the very next second, the spilled blood flowed back into his body, and the wound closed as if it had never been there.

This extraordinary ability did not bring him much excitement.

Perhaps he had grown stronger than before, but he was far from being omniscient or omnipotent.

He was simply stronger than before—once an undefeatable existence on Earth, and now… still an undefeatable existence on Earth.

Exhaling slowly, Makoto turned and left this place.

...........

Konoha, the Imperial Palace.

In the deep of night, everyone was fast asleep.

Suddenly, Naruto let out a loud cry and jolted awake from his bed.

This abrupt noise also roused Sasuke and Neji, who had been sleeping nearby.

"What's wrong?" Sasuke rubbed his sleepy eyes and asked groggily.

Naruto sat there, breathing heavily, his wide eyes filled with unease.

"I..."

"Naruto?" Neji also sat up, looking at him in confusion.

"I had a dream… a nightmare…"

"It's just a dream, go back to sleep," Sasuke said impatiently.

Neji lay back down as well, adding, "Dreams aren't real. Just sleep."

Not real…

Naruto sat there in silence for a while, then got out of bed and quietly left the bedroom.

Neji watched his retreating figure but said nothing, turning over to sleep again.

Naruto went to the living room, turned on the light, and poured himself a glass of water.

As he drank, he felt a bit better.

Just then, the living room door suddenly opened, and Makoto walked in.

"Dad?"

"Why are you still awake?" Makoto asked as he noticed Naruto standing there in his pajamas, drinking water.

"I had a nightmare and got scared awake."

"What kind of nightmare?"

Naruto hesitated before slowly replying, "I dreamt that… you and Mom… you both… died. A lot of people were calling me a monster..."

Makoto froze for a moment, then quickly stepped closer to Naruto.

"Naruto, you…"

Naruto put down his cup and reached out to hug his father, though because of his height, he could only wrap his arms around Makoto's leg.

"Dad, I'm a little scared."

Makoto silently rubbed Naruto's head, comforting him. "It's okay, don't be afraid. Dad is always here."

After soothing Naruto back to sleep, Makoto found that he himself couldn't sleep anymore.

He sat alone in the living room, deep in thought.

Was Naruto's experience just a dream?

Or had something else happened—perhaps something similar to soul displacement?

For now, Makoto couldn't figure it out.
