After Paz left with Eliza's brother, As, Leyton suddenly felt a sense of loss.
"So, I've already come to regard that cat as a partner," Leyton murmured, gazing up at the crimson moon above.
He realized that he was adapting to this world much faster than he had anticipated.
"If this continues, will I even want to go back in the end?" Leyton felt a bit lost.
"Caw!!"
A loud birdcall shattered the silence of the night.
Leyton looked up to see the crow had reappeared, circling twice in the air before landing on the gas lamp post ahead, its gilded eyes fixed on him.
"You haven't been hanging around here this whole time, have you?" Leyton asked, after a moment of silence as the thought occurred to him.
Having used Rapid Thought too many times in a short period, Leyton felt his entire brain becoming sluggish; everything seemed to be happening half a beat too slow.
"Caw! Caw~~" The crow perched on the gas lamp post and called out twice.
Leyton thought it was imitating Paz, trying to bluff its way out of the situation.
Although Leyton was a bit annoyed, there was nothing he could do, not when the other party was a big shot!
"Do I still need to go further ahead?" Leyton asked, changing the subject.
"Caw~!" The crow still didn't answer, merely calling out once before flapping its wings and flying away.
Leyton watched the direction it flew, which seemed to be the same direction Ussell of the Church of the Earth Mother had taken earlier.
"What happened over there? Or what's happening?" Leyton pondered for a moment before following in that direction.
Walking further ahead meant moving away from the city center.
This was why the previous battles in this area hadn't been investigated.
Of course, the main reason was that people at home didn't dare to come out and check.
With both the Church of the Earth Mother and the Church of the God of Knowledge of Wisdom sending people, the ordinary residents in this area had probably been quietly relocated or led away.
The houses along the road became sparse, and the road was no longer as tidy as before.
Leyton held a pistol in one hand and carried the Great Magician's Top Hat wrapped in his coat in the other, with the metal box containing the Bronze Phosphorus tucked into his coat pocket.
At the first sign of trouble, he would use the Bronze Phosphorus.
After using up two talismans and Paz leaving, Leyton suddenly felt that choosing to continue venturing forward alone wasn't a wise choice.
However, the crow circling overhead made him hesitant to turn back now.
Even if the crow's current behavior didn't seem malicious, who could guarantee it wouldn't become malicious later, especially when he knew nothing about it?
Continuing to follow the crow circling in the air, Leyton moved forward into increasingly desolate areas.
Gradually, Leyton noticed that something was off around him.
The plants here occasionally showed signs of having undergone a round of mutation and alteration, either growing slender thorns on their branches or becoming gigantic.
Some plants were even blooming out of season.
When passing through these areas, Leyton subconsciously covered his mouth and nose with his coat collar.
As a Sequence 6 Biologist of the Planter pathway, he possessed the ability to create biological toxins.
The mutations in the surrounding plants, along with the huge holes in the ground left by something emerging from the earth, made Leyton suspect that these were the traces left behind by a Sequence 5 Druid.
As a Druid, when encountering tricky opponents, using subtle biological toxins to weaken the enemy's combat power was a very reasonable tactic.
Leyton didn't know if the Druid had dealt with the biological toxins they created, but he had to be careful.
With his small stature, he could easily be caught off guard and capsize in a ditch.
"Caw~" The crow circling in the air suddenly landed on Leyton's shoulder.
Leyton's body tensed up subconsciously, relaxing only after seeing what had landed on his shoulder.
"What's wrong?" Leyton immediately asked in a low voice, thinking the crow had discovered something.
"Nothing, your captain and the others are ahead.
My identity isn't suitable for outsiders to know.
Give me the Bronze Phosphorus you have, I'll use it to conceal my aura."
"Huh? How do you know it has the function of concealing aura?" Leyton originally wanted to ask how the crow knew he had Bronze Phosphorus, but remembering that he had just used it in battle, he didn't ask that question.
Instead, he curiously asked how the crow knew Bronze Phosphorus could conceal aura, as the captain hadn't mentioned it.
"It doesn't have that function, it's just that I can use the residual power on it to hide my aura," the crow said.
Leyton hesitated for a moment.
The Bronze Phosphorus was his only talisman, and honestly, he was unwilling to lend it out.
But if he refused, the crow would just leave, and he would lose a protective charm.
"Okay, but if there's danger, you have to protect my safety," Leyton said, staring into the crow's gilded eyes.
"Agreed," the crow nodded readily.
Leyton then lowered his pistol and took out the metal box containing the Bronze Phosphorus from his coat.
Opening it, he revealed the Bronze Phosphorus, which looked a bit dimmer than when he first got it.
Leyton handed over the opened metal box, and the crow immediately lowered its head and bit it, then Leyton saw the Bronze Phosphorus, about half a palm size, being swallowed into the crow's stomach in an extremely unreasonable manner.
"You... you ate it?" Leyton never imagined that the crow meant swallowing it when it said 'use'.
"I'm just a crow, if I don't swallow it, am I supposed to grow a hand to hold it?" the crow said matter-of-factly.
"Well, you're right! But after you're done using it, are you planning to spit it out of your stomach and return it to me? Or not?" Leyton felt that these magical creatures were all a bit eccentric.
"It's just a mystical item, I'll just give you a feather later," the crow's voice echoed in Leyton's mind, sounding very generous.
"Your feather? Is it also a mystical item?" Although Leyton didn't have much expectation, he still asked curiously.
"No, but it can help you seal that hat.
That hat of yours is not bad, it has some of the abilities of both the Trickster and the Clown, but the side effects are too severe.
You can use my feather to seal it to a certain extent, so you can use it normally, and I'll also help you hide the fact that this is a Sealed Artifact," the crow's voice sounded very confident.
Leyton had to admit that he was shamefully tempted.
The captain had said before that if the Bronze Phosphorus was damaged or lost, it didn't need to be returned.
Thinking about it this way, Leyton suddenly felt that the crow had been eyeing the Bronze Phosphorus for a long time.
In the end, he couldn't restrain the desire in his heart, and Leyton chose to agree to the crow's suggestion.
Leyton emphasized to himself in his heart: The main reason is because this crow is dishonorable and has already swallowed the Bronze Phosphorus, otherwise he wouldn't necessarily agree to this condition.
"You have to protect me for a longer period of time, until the Clown incident is over.
I'm just a Sequence 8, it's too dangerous for me in this matter," Leyton added.
"Caw~!" The crow started acting dumb again.
"This is a necessary condition, otherwise I'll tell the captain about this deal," Leyton continued when the crow didn't respond.
The crow didn't even bother to call out this time.
"And also tell the people of the Church of the Earth Mother," Leyton added.
"Okay, you need to be more patient with a crow," the crow's voice echoed in Leyton's mind.
The corners of his mouth twitched involuntarily.
This crow must have learned from Paz, it must have!
