Chapter 40: What a day

Mike's face returned to normal.

His claws faded, becoming human hands again.

Breathing heavily, he climbed down from the rooftop.

He didn't go to the store anymore.

Instead, he returned to his apartment.

Lasa was waiting.

"Password?" she asked.

"Lasa, it's me. Your dad owns that store," Mike replied.

She smiled and let him in.

Mike stepped in and said, "I fought him."

"Who?" Lasa asked.

"The shapeshifter. He's dead."

Lasa's eyes widened.

"Really? Do you know what he wanted?"

"No… I don't." (That was a lie.)

But Mike stayed silent. He didn't want to tell her yet.

"Alright," Lasa said.

"Let's tell the others."

Weeks passed.

First one week…

Then two…

Then four…

One by one, everyone was discharged from the hospital.

"GUYS! GUYSSS! I'M BACK!!"

That loud voice — unmistakable.

Giel.

Mike grinned.

He was full of energy again — like nothing had ever happened.

But something had changed.

Kad… spoke less now.

Mike turned to him.

"Kad, so… now that you're out… what's next?"

Kad shook his head.

"I… don't know. Probably heading back to the base."

"Yeah. Let's go back."

A few days later…

They were there again.

The Grand Base.

Right in front of them.

"MIKEEEE! WHAT'S UP!"

Baz leapt onto Mike, hugging him like a missile.

"Bazzz!" Mike laughed, catching him.

"Wanna spar?"

"HELL YEAH!"

"But first — tell me everything. Start to finish!"

Baz and Mike walked off together.

Along the way, Mike was greeted by students and commanders alike.

From a distance…

Giel spotted Has.

"HAS!!" he yelled.

He ran over.

"We missed you, man!"

Has grinned.

"Honestly? I missed you guys too."

Has, Giel, Kad, and Lasa headed to their shared room.

Lasa smiled.

"Feels good to be back."

Then Has started talking.

"So… I went on a B-rank mission recently, yeah?"

"We had to locate a group of missing civilians in a forest."

He leaned back, arms crossed.

"Everyone survived. I shot a light beam straight into the sky — they spotted it and found us."

"Still… it was intense."

"We believe you," Giel said with a grin.

"But now," Lasa jumped in, "we're all back. Which means…"

"We can finally take missions together again!"

"That's right," Has nodded.

"Then let's go tell the base we're back in action!" Giel said enthusiastically.

They walked through the halls, greeting students and commanders along the way.

The atmosphere buzzed with energy.

Meanwhile, in the training yard:

Mike and Baz were sparring.

It wasn't looking good for Baz.

Score: 0 to 6. All for Mike.

"Baz," Mike smirked, "do you need a warm-up round first?"

"Warm-up?" Baz groaned, wiping sweat off his brow.

"I've been doing three fights a day lately… I should be destroying you!"

They both laughed.

Mike could feel it — he was stronger than ever.

Right now, he was the strongest in the entire academy.

Back inside, the group reunited.

"Giel, Has, Kad, Lasa…"

"Are you ready to take on a new mission?"

Just then, a commander stepped forward.

"Mike. Baz."

"The pride of the base," he said with a proud smile.

"We have an S-rank solo mission…"

"…for each of you."

Then the commander turned to the four.

"You must travel to an island… and deliver this safely."

The island was large — isolated, and far from the mainland.

Has was handed a black, metal case.

"An old commander — retired — lives there. But we've received a message: he's seriously ill."

"Inside this case is his medicine."

"You have four days."

"If it doesn't reach him in time… he'll die."

He paused, letting the weight of the mission sink in.

"We'll transport you near the island — but after that, you're on your own."

Then the commander turned to Mike and Baz.

"You two will be taking on solo missions."

He looked to Baz first.

"Baz — you're to help track down a thief known as 'Eus.'"

"He's robbed four banks this month. Clever, slippery… he's always gotten away."

"But this ends now. We've been called in."

Then he turned to Mike.

"Mike — you'll join the hunt for the lake monster."

"There are reports of a creature in a nearby lake. Thick body, huge open mouth — several sightings."

"We need eyes and strength out there."

"Alright, move out!"

And so, each of them left…

…on their own missions.
