Chapter 1308: Challenging Trial (13)
Silver flesh covered in red energy dominated my vision as the monster flew right above me, its powerful legs allowing it to sail through the air as it avoided us both once again, repositioning itself back at the egg.
The fight had dragged on for another two minutes or so, and I was beginning to feel the strains of the fight on my limbs and especially in my Core, which ached as the amount of mana I had expended reached a third of my total capacity.
It hadn't really done much besides a few surface level attacks that were easily parryable or dodgeable, spending the rest of its time studying us and avoiding us as we went after it; that was what was worrying me about this fight of ours, since it wasn't really doing much at all.
It was conserving a lot of its vast amounts of stamina while we were being made to run around and make ourselves look like fools as we tried to deal significant damage to it, which just proved fruitless thanks to its ability to regenerate.
Even Lady Fenyras's more serious attacks barely left marks anymore, especially now that it had that red armor covering its already resilient body; she could break through the plates and rend the metal beneath apart, yes, but against something that began to knit itself back together while the blade that had harmed it was still inside of its flesh....
What exactly was she meant to do besides go for dozens upon dozens of wounds in the same area in hopes of eventually wearing it down to a costly mistake that could enable an easy victory for us?
There was nothing else to do except for that, at least for her, and for me I was attempting to find a workaround using magic, which so far was proving to be a little challenging but definitely lucrative, at least if I could actually get it to work.
It was susceptible to both my raw Water Magic and also my Ice Magic, alongside being weak against the frost since it chewed away at the durability of its metal flesh and made it more brittle, giving Lady Fenyras better hopes in breaking it apart.
But just because it was weak to that didn't mean that it was going to be easy to make use of this weakness I had found; those red plates it had now absorbed most the mana inside of my attacks while also acting as mirrors, reflecting back raw mana that was just waiting to chew through my flesh.
It was a dangerous monster that had very potent strengths and barely exploitable weaknesses, all while being far more than capable of picking its battles to suit its advantages; those extra appendages it had sprouted from its shoulders were cracking through the air towards us whenever possible, and each one was like a meteor covered in razorblades.
Just a single hit would take us out of commission, and that was just from those; there was still the monster's paws, tail, and of course its jaws, which could definitely snap through our armor, flesh and bone like they were made from paper.
But this wasn't the first time I had faced something as strong as this, and it definitely wasn't the first time for the Demon Wolf, so we just had to put our heads together and figure out a way to overcome this monster's strengths and make use of its weaknesses, all while avoiding death.
Sounded so simple, and it might have actually been rather simple if Lady Fenyras was capable of being someone I could actually work with, but instead I had to just run along with her whims as she threw herself at it with glee, grinning like a lunatic as she constantly tried to slip her blade beneath those plates and into its metallic flesh over and over again.
I had to try and time anything I did with her well in advance, and even then she was so sporadic that the few times I unleashed waves of powerful spells against this monster she just so happened to take a step back and study it; when I thought she was going to search for an opening and held myself back, she threw herself at it headfirst without thinking.
The Demon Wolf was just absolutely terrible when it came to coordination, but I suppose it was also that randomness that kept the monster from targeting me at all since whenever it tried to, she was always doing something else that demanded most of its attention, leaving me to do whatever I pleased on the side.
Condensing my water once more and shooting out a few jets of it, I sliced through the plates and began to move away from the reflected beams of mana that threatened to cut me down, and the moment those plates were out of the way Lady Fenyras leapt forwards to try and take advantage of them.
She and the monster were almost equal in terms of speed, dashing around just quick enough to avoid being tracked easily by my eyes and throwing attacks around that broke the beautiful marble flooring apart in speeds that felt illegal.
As her sword lunged through the air and aimed for the base of one of the appendages, the monster tried to stab her with both of them while twisting its body around to bring its tail to bare, only to find two thick blocks of ice blocking one of the appendages and its tail.
The appendage dug into the ice before wrapping around it, grinding it into dust and freeing up the space to try again, while the tail simply smashed through the block thanks to its incredible weight and momentum, but the fraction of a second I bought for her allowed Lady Fenyras to make some progress.
Stepping into the monster's space, she avoided the tail completely and ducked just under the attack from the appendage, allowing her sword to slide into the monster's shoulder and elicit a roar of pain from it as she landed another blow, one that started swinging the momentum into our favor...
