Chapter 60 - A Cash-Strapped Chairman Meng is Scarier than the Zombie Apocalypse!
Zhang Lunping sat in the car, nervously observing the surroundings and occasionally stealing glances at Meng Xu. Although anxious, he didn’t dare to speak.
In Zhang Lunping’s mind, Meng Xu’s current influence far exceeded that of his former boss at the brewery!
Offending the brewery boss might at worst mean losing a job.
Offending Chairman Meng now… goodness, even if you turned into a zombie, you’d have to roll up your sleeves and work hard!
Therefore, even though Zhang Lunping wanted to leave, he didn’t dare move without Meng Xu’s word.
But he couldn’t understand what Meng Xu was doing.
After hesitating for a moment, with his lips trembling, he was about to say something when he saw Meng Xu suddenly lift the fire axe and hack at the sturdy zombie lying on the ground.
“Bang!”
A loud noise rang out, and blood splattered everywhere.
Scaring Zhang Lunping, who quickly ducked.
After a while, he dared to peek out.
He saw that Meng Xu had cut off one of the zombie’s arms and was now… scraping at its face?
“Huh?”
Zhang Lunping was shocked by Meng Xu’s actions, feeling a wave of nausea and an urge to vomit.
“Bro, how about we leave? This is really creepy.”
Zhang Lunping couldn’t hold back, whispering to Meng Xu, who seemed much younger than him, “Although we didn’t hit the zombie, what you’re doing seems a bit disrespectful to the law. We shouldn’t do illegal things.”
Meng Xu looked back at Zhang Lunping calmly, saying, “This isn’t a human; it’s a zombie. Has any law been passed protecting zombies? Don’t worry, I have a hunch there’s something off about this guy. Let me study it.”
“This is a scientific research. If we find its weakness, it’ll be easier to deal with them in the future.”
With that, Meng Xu swapped tools, opting for a wrench to hammer the zombie’s head.
He had smashed ordinary zombie heads before; now he wanted to see what would happen with a mutant zombie.
As the skull shattered, Meng Xu suddenly found something unusual.
“Huh?”
Meng Xu was stunned, then used the wrench to peel away the flesh at the back of the head, discovering a red, gemstone-like crystal.
It wasn’t large, covered in blood-red veins, pulsating as if it was alive. It was quite fascinating.
“What the heck! A zombie crystal?!”
Meng Xu exclaimed in surprise, then scoffed incredulously, “This is so cliché… What does this do, enhance superpowers?”
Though unsure of its purpose, Meng Xu pocketed the crystal, intending to study it later.
Turning back, Meng Xu said to Zhang Lunping, “Hand me a tissue.”
Zhang Lunping hurriedly took out a pack of tissues, pulled out two sheets, and handed them to Meng Xu.
Meng Xu wiped the blood from his hands and the wrench, then nonchalantly returned to the passenger seat, saying to Zhang Lunping, “Alright, let’s go to your place and pick up my other interns.”
Hearing Meng Xu’s words, Zhang Lunping was instantly excited, quickly starting the car and speeding off.
Meng Xu sat in the passenger seat, contemplating the situation.
But soon, he decided to let it go.
Leave specialized tasks to the professionals. He’d find two experts in biology or virology to study it full-time instead of fumbling around himself.
A chairman only needs to do two things.
Zhang Lunping quickly made his way up to the third floor, anxious yet with renewed strength from the adrenaline rush of the past two days. Skillfully climbing the stairs and unlocking the door to his apartment, he found his wife, Zhou Yanni, wielding a kitchen knife and looking tense.
“You’re finally back…”
His wife, with tears streaming down her face, was just about to embrace a heartfelt reunion with her husband when Zhang Lunping urgently said, “Where’s Qiqi? Pack up quickly, and take all the cash we have, we need to get down fast. The medicine is in the car!”
“W-What?”
His wife was puzzled, but as she saw Zhang Lunping rush into the bedroom and emerge with their child, she hurried to pack. In a low voice, she questioned, “Do we really need money? It’s the end of the world; money is useless now. We still have two packs of bread and ten packs of instant noodles… Maybe some clothes and food will be enough…”
“Take everything! Having money is much more useful than those things!”
Holding his daughter, Zhang Lunping noticed his wife was still in a daze. Growing more anxious but unable to explain much due to the urgency of the situation, he could only shout, “Hurry, hurry, hurry! Take all the savings we have at home!”
He understood the apocalypse and naturally recognized the importance of food.
While he didn’t fully understand Meng Xu, he did know one thing: Meng Xu seemed to be in desperate need of money. Zhang Lunping had a chilling realization— a cash-strapped Chairman Meng might be scarier than any zombie in the apocalypse.
Chairman Meng, when short on money, seemed even more frightening than the zombies in the apocalypse.
Recalling Meng Xu’s brutal dissection of that strong mutated zombie, he shuddered with fear. Thankfully, they had some savings at home.
Zhou Yanni, still in a daze but trusting her husband, went to the bedroom’s drawer, took out a wallet filled with red-colored banknotes, various cards, and bankbooks, then hastily packed some clothes and followed Zhang Lunping downstairs.
But as she reached the ground floor, her face went pale, and her knees grew weak at the sight before her. Meng Xu stood beside the Mercedes, nonchalantly smoking a cigarette he’d snatched from the former employee Liu Xiaojun’s store, and holding a now slightly bent fire axe, conveying a smile he believed to be quite friendly.
“Hello, my name is Meng Xu. You must be Zhou Yanni! From today onward, you are a Peace and Order Group intern.”
Hearing this, Zhou Yanni was taken aback.
The world was ending, and she was being asked to work?
And it seemed…
She had to start as an intern?!
