Chapter 59 - Returning to the Office Feels Like Coming Home!
Poor zombies.
The only valuable items, like jade bracelets, got shattered when the zombies jumped.
In total, Meng Xu gathered 396.50 yuan from this looting activity.
Zhang Lunping was still overwhelmed by the earlier events, looking at Meng Xu with newfound respect.
Why does going back to the office feel like coming home…? Weird, I never had this feeling when I was an employee before.
Meng Xu thought to himself, guiding Zhang Lunping towards the heavily worn Mercedes E300 parked near the residential complex. Gazing at the beat-up vehicle, Meng Xu was worried, “The car owner won’t come after me, right?”
Although he didn’t know who the owner was, the car definitely wasn’t his, and seeing its condition, Meng Xu felt quite guilty.
Maybe I should leave an apology letter and a small card in the car.
Of course, if the owner doesn’t come after him, he wouldn’t need to pay for the damages.
Satisfied with his decision, Meng Xu nodded, about to start the car when he suddenly thought of something. He turned to Zhang Lunping in the passenger seat, “Do you know how to drive?”
“Yes, yes.”
Hearing Meng Xu’s voice, Zhang Lunping shivered, snapping out of his daze and answering nervously.
“Then why are you just sitting there? You drive this time.”
Without hesitation, Meng Xu switched seats with Zhang Lunping, “Little Zhang, as an employee, can’t you be more observant… Were you really a manager? How are you this clueless?”
Meng Xu was quite displeased.
He felt utterly useless as a chairman.
I almost ended up being the employee’s chauffeur!
Of course, there was another reason for letting Zhang Lunping drive.
He needed Zhang Lunping to guide them back to his home to fetch his wife and child.
He didn’t know the way himself.
Zhang Lunping meekly complied, immediately taking the driver’s seat. Recalling the route, he quickly started the car and sped off.
The car’s roar was loud.
It instantly alerted nearby zombies. Although Zhang Lunping was a bit flustered, his years of driving experience kicked in, allowing him to successfully start the car and drive away.
However, unlike their initial journey, the road back had many more overturned vehicles, indicating that many people had attempted to escape in recent days… but their direction was towards Taoxian, opposite to the direction of the Tech Innovation Building.
No doubt, they were heading to the safe zone set up by the Citizen’s Self-Rescue Committee in Taoxian.
But many probably didn’t make it to the safe zone alive.
They had likely turned into the wandering zombies on the streets.
As the vehicle sped along, Zhang Lunping drove cautiously. Approaching a traffic light intersection, he hesitated and then slowed down, softly asking Meng Xu, “Chairman, should we wait for the red light?”
Meng Xu was playing on his phone. Hearing Zhang Lunping, he looked up and then replied, “Waiting for a red light? Are you crazy? What if those zombies around us start hitching rides? Just run the light!”
Zhang Lunping: …
You were the one waiting for red lights before, and now you’re running them too.
Thinking he had figured out Meng Xu’s mindset, Zhang Lunping found himself bewildered once again.
Staring at the bewildered Zhang Lunping, Meng Xu was exasperated: “If the traffic light is working, of course, we wait. We absolutely do not run red lights. But if the traffic lights aren’t flashing or lit, doesn’t that mean they aren’t functioning? Can’t you even figure that out, Zhang? You’ve truly disappointed me!”
With the power out, all the traffic lights were down.
In such a situation, there were no traffic lights to wait for, so what was the point?
Meng Xu could only sigh deeply at this.
This employee was too rigid and unable to adapt.
In this situation, even if a traffic cop came to issue a ticket, they would still be able to argue their case!
Zhang Lunping was utterly baffled.
Who could have guessed?
After reprimanding his employee, Meng Xu continued playing on his phone.
However, the signal had worsened since the power outage.
But Meng Xu was patient. He’d wait half an hour to get the latest updates on the outside world.
After all, it helped Meng Xu stay informed.
“The Citizen Self-Rescue Committee in Heqing City has begun its operations. Liu Song has been appointed as the chief of the committee; Lou Funing has been appointed as the commander of the Special Disaster Response Corps…”
Meng Xu casually searched and found that various organizations were springing up, with only the names and leadership structures changing compared to before.
He looked up the information on Liu Song and Lou Funing, finding that the former was the lowest-ranked deputy county head in Taoxian; the latter a retired battalion-level commander from Taoxian.
“Something feels off…”
Meng Xu furrowed his brows but couldn’t pinpoint why.
Just then, Meng Xu had a vague premonition, feeling as if there was a special talent nearby drawing his attention.
He immediately looked up, staring out of the windshield, and saw a strong zombie crawling on the roadside, fiercely growling.
Looking closer, Meng Xu recognized it as the high-level talent, the bodyguard zombie!
The bodyguard zombie was in terrible shape, with its legs crushed and arms twisted awfully, growling madly at its surroundings.
Nearby were four or five lesser zombies and an overturned Audi. Meng Xu realized it was the same car he had left the garage with two days ago.
“Stop the car.”
Meng Xu was utterly shocked and immediately motioned for Zhang Lunping to pull over.
Zhang Lunping had no idea what Meng Xu was up to but obediently stopped the car.
“Guess what this guy is doing?”
Meng Xu casually pointed at the bodyguard zombie.
“Uh…”
Zhang Lunping wiped the sweat from his forehead, carefully considered, but couldn’t figure it out. He softly answered Meng Xu, “Chairman, I don’t know.”
He decided it was better to be honest.
After all, he couldn’t keep up with Meng Xu’s thinking, and saying something wrong could be bad.
“He’s clearly hustling here.”
Meng Xu was very curious about this high-level talent bodyguard zombie. He opened the car door, wielded his fire axe, and swiftly cleared out the surrounding lesser zombies. Then he looked at the crawling zombie and asked, “Bro, how much did you make today?”
Meng Xu observed the zombie while speaking, “Haha, I just fainted from hunger and just woke up. I know it’s abrupt, but can I borrow 50 yuan for a chicken leg? I haven’t had any income for days and have been starving. I only asked because I saw you just made a lot. Hope this doesn’t bother you, brother.”
Seeing the zombie closely, it was clear to Meng Xu—it was playing dead, trying to scam him.
Zhang Lunping: ?
“Roar!”
The zombie let out a growl and started crawling towards Meng Xu.
Seeing this, Meng Xu continued, “Oh, so you’re not scamming, you were hit by a car? Don’t worry, brother. I’ll call 120 for you, hang in there.”
While saying this, Meng Xu pretended to dial 120 and began closely examining the zombie’s condition.
This zombie looked quite different.
It seemed to have similar strength to Li Xiang’s, and what surprised Meng Xu was that he could see the zombie’s crushed legs slowly regenerating, albeit very slowly.
What was this? Zombies could regenerate injuries?
Meng Xu frowned, and as the zombie crawled closer, he took advantage of its crippled state and struck it twice with the fire axe, rendering it immobile.
However…
Meng Xu felt there should be something unique about this zombie. Mutant zombies must have some distinguishing features from regular ones.
“Should I kill it and dissect it to study mutant zombies?”
