Chapter 60: Chapter 58: The Trade Federation Viceroy is Captured
Hope and Scott flew swiftly through the air toward the Separatist position, landing on the Defoliator weapon system within seconds and infiltrating the main control panel through microscopic access ports. Once inside the sophisticated machinery, the miniaturized duo began systematically disconnecting critical wiring and destroying key components that controlled the weapon's targeting and firing systems.
Lok Durd's technical assistant noticed that several indicator lights on the control console had suddenly gone dark. Curious about the malfunction, he pressed various buttons and switches, but nothing responded to his commands. He immediately began attempting emergency repairs, but predictably received a massive electrical shock when he pried open the console's protective panel.
The assistant was thrown backward by the electrical discharge, striking the ground hard and losing consciousness immediately, smoke rising from his singed uniform.
When Lok Durd witnessed his aide lying motionless and smoldering on the ground, he stared in stunned disbelief and shouted: "What in the galaxy is happening here?!" By this time, Scott and Hope had already escaped from the weapon system and were flying to safety.
"Is the explosive device ready for detonation?" Scott asked through their private comm channel.
"Once we reach minimum safe distance, we can enjoy our own personal fireworks display," Hope responded with satisfaction.
Scott began the countdown sequence, and as the timer reached zero, he pressed the miniaturized remote detonator in his palm.
The explosion was tremendous!
The AAT tank positioned directly beside Durd erupted in a ball of flame and twisted metal, the concussive force sending the corpulent general tumbling across the battlefield.
He screamed in terror and confusion: "What happened? What's going on?"
"Sir, one of our tanks has exploded," a nearby battle droid reported with mechanical precision, pointing toward the smoking wreckage.
Durd was so infuriated by this obviously useless observation that he roared angrily: "I can see that, you mechanical moron! What I want to know is WHY it exploded!"
However, before the droid could formulate a response, the general noticed something moving rapidly across his face. He suddenly realized that the tank explosion had ignited the Defoliator weapon's remaining fuel, and flames were now spreading directly toward his position.
Durd was violently thrown through the air by a secondary explosion, his considerable bulk striking another tank before crashing heavily to the ground.
The general screamed and wailed like an injured child as the searing pain from the flames consuming his body became unbearable. He frantically swung his arms and beat at the ground, desperately trying to extinguish the fire that was slowly cooking him alive.
One of the surviving battle droids rushed over to assist their commanding officer, hurriedly attempting to stomp out the flames engulfing the general's arm. Unfortunately, Durd's limb, already severely weakened by severe burns, snapped completely under the droid's metal foot and crumbled into a pile of ash-like remains.
Lok Durd's screams reached new levels of agony as he clutched the cauterized stump where his arm had been.
"General Durd..."
Durd cautiously opened his pain-filled eyes to see Steve Rogers, Anakin Skywalker, Scott Lang, Hope van Dyne, Aayla Secura, Ahsoka Tano, Commander Bly, and Captain Rex standing in a circle around his broken form.
Recognizing that his situation was completely hopeless, he pleaded desperately: "Please... can you spare my miserable life?"
The only answer he received was a powerful punch to his face from Steve, followed immediately by unconsciousness.
Several hours later, the clone troopers were transmitting emergency signals into space, hoping that nearby Republic fleet elements would detect their communications and provide extraction.
Hope and Scott sat together in each other's arms, gazing out across the endless prairie of Maridun, finally able to enjoy a moment of peace after their long separation and recent battles.
Meanwhile, Steve, Aayla, Anakin, and Ahsoka discussed their current tactical situation and the broader implications of their mission.
Anakin reflected on their recent victory: "Considering everything we faced here, this battle went far better than I initially anticipated. We achieved our objectives with virtually no casualties among our forces."
Bly glanced toward the clone trooper operating their communication equipment and sighed with relief: "I sincerely hope all our missions could conclude this successfully."
"I share that sentiment completely, Bly," Aayla agreed with heartfelt sincerity.
"But we all understand that such outcomes are unfortunately rare," Bly's voice grew more somber. "Whenever there is war, there are inevitably sacrifices and losses."
Anakin smiled encouragingly: "Hey, try to stay positive. This is one of those rare moments where we didn't lose any of our people. We should appreciate that."
Their conversation was interrupted by the approach of Wag Too, who wore an expression of genuine gratitude and newfound determination.
With a bright smile illuminating his features, Wag Too said earnestly: "Thank you once again for everything you've done to protect us. Many of us Lurmen are now ready to take an active role in this galactic war that threatens to consume everything. If it weren't for your intervention and sacrifice, I'm afraid I wouldn't have the opportunity to be standing here speaking with you right now."
Wag Too then noticed his father walking slowly toward their group, and his eyes lit up with hope as he said: "Oh, Father. I was just expressing our people's gratitude to the Jedi Knights and their allies."
Tee Watt Kaa looked at each of them in turn, released a deep sigh that seemed to carry the weight of generations, and said with quiet acceptance: "Perhaps... perhaps it would indeed be beneficial to have your guidance and protection."
The elderly leader then looked at his son with profound depth and understanding, before hunching his shoulders and walking away, his entire posture suggesting internal conflict and gradual acceptance of changing times.
A thunderous roar from the sky drew everyone's attention upward. Three Republic LAAT/i gunships were slowly descending through Maridun's atmosphere toward their position.
The Avengers, Jedi Knights, and clone troopers bid their farewells to the Lurmen villagers and boarded the gunships to depart the planet.
James Rhodes and Sam Wilson were absolutely overjoyed when Hope stepped aboard Anakin's Venator-class Star Destroyer, their reunion marking another successful recovery of scattered Avengers.
Now only Natasha Romanoff, Pietro Maximoff, Wanda Maximoff, and Vision remained missing, but based on current patterns, these four were most likely located somewhere within this galaxy. Everyone felt confident they would be reunited soon.
Admiral Yularen approached Anakin with official communications: "General Skywalker, we have incoming holographic transmissions from both the Galactic Senate and the Jedi High Council."
Anakin and the Avengers followed Yularen to the ship's primary communications chamber, where holographic projections of Chancellor Palpatine, Master Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mace Windu, Plo Koon, Senator Padmé Amidala, and Jar Jar Binks materialized before them.
"Master Jedi, Captain Rogers, it brings me great joy to see that you have all returned to us safely," Palpatine said with what appeared to be genuine relief and happiness.
His attention then focused on Hope with polite curiosity: "And who might this lovely young woman be?"
Sensing that all eyes were now upon her, Hope stood and introduced herself professionally: "Hello, my name is Hope van Dyne, and my operational codename within the Avengers is the Wasp."
Palpatine smiled warmly: "Congratulations on finding another of your lost teammates. The galaxy is certainly safer with more of you reunited."
Anakin addressed his former Master: "Obi-Wan, what's the current situation? You mentioned important developments."
Obi-Wan directed everyone's attention toward Padmé, who smiled with obvious satisfaction: "Thanks to the exceptional efforts of Jedi Master Luminara Unduli, Commander Gree, and Senator Binks, we have successfully captured Trade Federation Viceroy Nute Gunray."
"Truly?" Palpatine displayed surprise and excitement, momentarily shifting his gaze from Hope: "Senator Amidala, you bring wonderful news to the entire Republic!"
Mace Windu spoke with determined authority: "With Nute Gunray now in our custody, we can take decisive action to bring this war to a swifter conclusion."
Anakin nodded in agreement: "Indeed, it sounds like you'll have considerable work ahead of you."
Mace Windu continued with tactical urgency: "News of Gunray's capture will spread rapidly throughout Separatist networks, and Count Dooku will undoubtedly dispatch rescue forces to retrieve him. Therefore, Anakin, we require your assistance to transfer Gunray to a secure location for intensive interrogation."
Anakin appeared puzzled by this assignment: "Aren't Obi-Wan and Master Plo Koon available for this mission? I'm confident they could accomplish it with their usual excellence."
Realizing he couldn't avoid explaining their embarrassing situation, Obi-Wan reluctantly admitted: "Master Plo and I are currently engaged with a particularly troublesome group of pirates. Unfortunately, because they have Count Dooku's direct support and advanced equipment, we cannot disengage from this operation at present."
Anakin observed his former Master's obviously embarrassed expression and immediately understood the situation completely. He struggled to contain his laughter at the thought of two experienced Jedi Knights leading their respective clone legions, yet being unable to defeat a band of pirates.
Obi-Wan glared at Anakin with mock severity, then sighed in resignation: "Go ahead and laugh if you must. There's no point in trying to maintain dignity at this point."
Laughter erupted throughout the Star Destroyer's communications chamber as everyone appreciated the ironic situation.
However, Ahsoka was clearly more concerned with practical matters than humor: "Masters, please forgive my directness, but my Master has recently sustained injuries and still requires time for proper recovery."
Padmé looked at her secret husband Anakin and confirmed that Ahsoka's concern was entirely justified—he was indeed still recovering from his injuries. She swallowed the worried words that almost escaped her lips, but her concerned gaze never left Anakin's form.
As if sensing his wife's emotional state, Anakin looked directly at Padmé and offered her a reassuring smile that conveyed both love and confidence.
Obi-Wan nodded with understanding: "You've been involved in far too many consecutive battles recently. I believe both you and the Avengers genuinely need proper rest and recovery time."
Mace Windu pressed the urgency of their situation: "But what about Nute Gunray? We must relocate him to a secure facility immediately, otherwise all our efforts will be completely wasted. When Dooku inevitably sends sufficient droid forces to mount a rescue operation, we risk not only losing Gunray but also suffering significant casualties among our own forces."
Anakin considered the dilemma carefully before making a decision that surprised everyone: "I believe Ahsoka is ready to assume command responsibilities. She can complete this mission with complete success."
Everyone present was shocked by this announcement, including Ahsoka herself.
Obi-Wan asked with obvious concern: "Anakin, are you absolutely certain about this decision?"
Anakin replied with complete conviction: "I am entirely sure of her capabilities. If it weren't for Ahsoka's actions and leadership during our recent mission, I would definitely not be standing here alive to speak with you now."
Steve stepped forward to offer additional support: "If it's not presumptuous, the Avengers can provide personnel to assist with this transfer operation."
Hope and Scott had just been reunited after their long separation and were obviously reluctant to be parted again so soon. James Rhodes volunteered immediately: "I'm willing to participate in this mission."
Rhodes understood Steve's dual reasoning perfectly—helping the Republic was important, but this assignment would also provide opportunities to search for their three remaining missing teammates.
Palpatine concluded the discussion with obvious satisfaction: "Then it is decided with everyone's agreement. Padawan Ahsoka Tano and Avenger War Machine will be responsible for safely retrieving Nute Gunray and bringing him to secure Republic custody."
