Marvel x Star Wars: Avengers in the Clone Wars

Chapter 59: Chapter 57: The Battle Begins

When Lok Durd led his remaining droid army toward the Lurmen village, Aayla, Steve Rogers, and the others were frantically repositioning the villagers' pod dwellings to create a makeshift defensive barrier around the settlement perimeter.

Durd raised his electrobinoculars and surveyed their defensive preparations with obvious disdain. He sneered contemptuously: "Pathetic! Do they seriously believe those primitive pod houses can withstand my droid army and AAT tank assault? Not to mention the Defoliator cannon."

As he watched the large seed pods being moved into position and stacked side by side to form barricades, his mood—already severely deteriorated by the destruction of his base—became even more volatile. He felt nothing but contempt for the Lurmen people's laughably inadequate defensive measures.

However, when he adjusted the focus for a closer examination of the defensive positions, he suddenly roared with fury: "Jedi! What are they doing in this forsaken village? So all of this destruction was orchestrated by the Jedi Knights! This explains everything!"

Meanwhile, the stubborn village elder Tee Watt Kaa observed the defensive barricades being constructed from their sacred pod dwellings with obvious displeasure, shouting angrily: "Stop this immediately! I never asked for your protection, and I do not want it!"

Steve ignored the leader's protests completely, continuing to work alongside Hardcase and Echo to maneuver another massive pod into position. He paused briefly to address the two clone troopers: "Echo, Hardcase, do we have anti-personnel mines in our equipment?"

Hardcase nodded with professional enthusiasm: "Affirmative, sir. Full complement ready for deployment."

"Then you know exactly what needs to be done, right?"

Hardcase nodded grimly and led the Domino Squad toward the forward defensive line to rapidly deploy their explosive surprises for the approaching enemy forces.

Meanwhile, Aayla and Anakin attempted to reason with the increasingly agitated Lurmen leader: "I'm genuinely sorry to have to tell you this, but this battle has become completely unavoidable. The Separatists are coming whether we're here or not."

Aayla spoke with simple directness before returning to help position additional pods for the village's defense.

Tee Watt Kaa said nothing in response, simply muttering under his breath before walking away in frustration and resignation.

His son, Wag Too, watched this exchange with obvious embarrassment and approached Aayla with an apologetic expression: "I truly appreciate everything you and your people are doing to protect us." He sighed heavily before continuing: "Although I desperately want to help in this fight, I'm afraid that given our current circumstances and my father's position..."

Ahsoka asked Wag Too with genuine curiosity: "Why is your community so divided about this? What's really happening here?"

Wag Too looked at the young Padawan with weary understanding: "My father is incredibly stubborn and traditional in his thinking. He has always believed that absolute pacifism will ultimately bring lasting peace to the galaxy. Our people have become split into two distinct factions. Most of the younger generation share my perspective and believe we should take up arms to defend ourselves against aggressors. The remainder follow my father's teachings blindly. We have all been raised with the fundamental belief that peace can only be achieved through complete non-violence. However, recent events have caused many of us to seriously question whether the philosophy we've held sacred for generations is actually correct or dangerously naive."

Ahsoka looked confused by the complexity of the situation, while Aayla maintained her composed expression as Steve installed the final defensive pod and turned to see Bly and Rex approaching his position.

Bly asked with tactical concern: "Sir, what's our strategic plan here? The Separatists have deployed at least six AAT tanks, including that extremely lethal Defoliator weapon we witnessed being tested, and their droid infantry numbers are substantial."

Steve began outlining their defensive strategy: "Our primary objective is protecting this village and its inhabitants at all costs. When those tanks move within effective range, we eliminate them immediately with concentrated fire. Right now, everyone needs to take their assigned positions and prepare for sustained combat operations."

Bly and Rex quickly identified optimal fighting positions while Bly dispersed his three clone soldiers among the Domino Squad to strengthen their defensive capabilities for the coming battle.

After conducting reconnaissance from behind one of the massive pod barriers, Rex reported: "The droids are maintaining their current positions for now."

Anakin analyzed the tactical situation: "They're positioned too far away to engage us effectively, otherwise they would have opened fire already. If we can neutralize their armored support, we can draw their infantry closer where our weapons will be most effective."

Lucky glanced skyward and shouted an urgent warning: "Incoming artillery!"

"Activate the shield generator!" Anakin commanded immediately.

After the clone troopers and Avengers quickly deployed the stolen shield generator, Steve pressed the activation sequence. A brilliant column of energy erupted from the device, forming an enormous protective barrier that encompassed the entire village area.

Everyone positioned inside the energy shield watched as the shells fired by the Defoliator weapon struck the barrier's perimeter, releasing searing energy that spread like napalm across the landscape until it encountered the shield's protective field and dissipated harmlessly.

Scott observed this defensive success with obvious relief: "Thank god the shield actually worked as advertised. Otherwise we'd all be nothing but ash and memories right now."

However, Aayla's expression remained grimly realistic as she provided crucial tactical information: "Unfortunately, battle droids can pass directly through energy shield barriers."

This revelation confused Hope, who had assumed the energy shield would provide complete protection against all threats: "Wait, what do you mean? Why doesn't it stop everything?"

Aayla explained the technology's limitations: "Energy-based projectiles like blaster bolts and plasma shells will be deflected or absorbed by the shield matrix. However, anything composed of solid matter—including battle droids—can pass directly through the energy field without any impediment."

Bly approached and reported on their defensive preparations: "General Secura, all defensive positions throughout the village have been completed and are ready for combat operations."

Steve began coordinating their multi-layered defense: "The battle droids will inevitably penetrate our shield perimeter. When that happens, we need to accomplish three critical objectives simultaneously. First, protect the shield generator at all costs. Second, ensure the safety of all Lurmen civilians. Third, effectively engage and destroy the droid forces while maintaining the first two priorities. If that generator is destroyed, the Separatist AAT tanks and the Defoliator cannon will resume their bombardment, which will result in catastrophic casualties for both us and the villagers."

Steve then turned his attention to Scott and Hope with specific tactical instructions: "Scott, Hope, I need both of you to infiltrate their position and destroy their heavy weapons systems. You're the only ones who can accomplish this mission without being detected by their sensors."

Scott and Hope nodded with determination, immediately shrinking to microscopic size and flying toward the enemy position as Steve's voice followed them: "Everyone else, hold the defensive line and protect both the generator and the civilians at all costs!"

"Roger that, sir!" the clone troopers responded in perfect unison, while the Jedi Knights nodded their acknowledgment.

Rex, who had been assigned to monitor enemy movements, shouted a tactical update: "Enemy forces are beginning their advance!"

The clone troopers raised their weapons to firing positions, Steve positioned himself prominently with his shield ready for combat, and both Jedi Knights ignited their lightsabers in preparation for the approaching battle.

As the droid army closed the distance, Steve charged forward beyond the energy shield's protection and engaged the nearest enemies directly. His vibranium shield struck the leading battle droids with devastating force, sending them flying backward with severe structural damage or complete decapitation.

The Jedi and clone troopers immediately followed Steve's aggressive lead, charging into combat as Anakin used the Force to pull an unfortunate B-1 battle droid directly into the path of his lightsaber, cleaving the mechanical warrior cleanly in half with effortless precision.

Aayla coordinated closely with Bly and her clone troopers, establishing defensive fire positions while providing covering fire for the forward assault elements.

Within a relatively short time, the first wave of the droid attack had been successfully repelled.

Ahsoka commented with youthful optimism: "That wasn't nearly as difficult as I expected."

Anakin immediately cautioned his apprentice against overconfidence: "Remember, Snips, that was only their initial probing attack."

As if summoned by his warning, the sound of mechanical footsteps grew progressively louder and more numerous, indicating a much larger force approaching their position.

Steve shouted tactical instructions to his dispersed forces: "Everyone, prepare for the next assault wave!"

Anakin called to his assigned team: "Domino Squad, follow my lead!"

Lucky, one of Bly's subordinates, asked for clarification: "What about the three of us, sir?"

Steve responded with clear command authority: "You three will form a fire team directly under my command."

"Rex, Bly, both of you maintain positions with Ahsoka and me for our defensive line," Aayla ordered with tactical precision.

After everyone had moved to their designated combat positions, Steve looked toward Anakin and the Domino Squad for confirmation of their prepared surprises: "Hardcase, are the explosive devices properly positioned?"

Hardcase smiled beneath his helmet, withdrew the detonation remote from his utility belt, and activated the sequence. The second attacking droid formation was instantly engulfed by a devastating series of coordinated explosions that eliminated the majority of the assault force.

Lok Durd, who witnessed this tactical disaster, became absolutely enraged that his droid army's second assault had achieved absolutely no meaningful progress against the defenders.

Grinding his teeth with fury, Durd glared at his remaining mechanical forces and roared: "All tank units! Open fire immediately!"

Steve was engaged in close combat alongside Flash, Cameron, and Lucky against the surviving battle droids when Flash suddenly detected an ominous whistling sound. Looking up at the sky, he shouted an urgent warning: "Incoming artillery bombardment!"

Anakin immediately commanded a tactical withdrawal: "Everyone fall back inside the shield perimeter immediately!"

Both combat groups began retreating rapidly toward the protective barrier, but just as they were about to reach safety, Steve spotted one of the tank shells falling directly toward the position occupied by three clone troopers.

Without any hesitation, he gathered his enhanced strength and burst forward at maximum speed, using his shield to physically push all three clones through the energy barrier to safety.

Aayla and Ahsoka's eyes widened in horror as they watched the artillery shell fall directly onto Steve's exposed position.

"Steve!" they both screamed in terror and disbelief.

Just as the shell impacted, Steve raised his vibranium shield above his head for maximum protection. The Defoliator weapon's shell struck the shield directly, creating a massive explosion that consumed his entire position in flames and smoke.

After several agonizing seconds, the smoke began to clear, revealing Steve's form. Most of his body was covered in burns and dirt, his uniform was torn and blackened, but incredibly, he was still alive and conscious!

The Jedi Knights and clone officers stared in absolute amazement at this impossible survival. They had witnessed firsthand the devastating power of the Defoliator weapon and its ability to incinerate all organic matter. Yet here stood Steve, methodically wiping debris from his shield as if nothing extraordinary had occurred.

Rex was the first to recover from his shock, muttering in disbelief: "I had no idea his shield could withstand a direct hit from the Defoliator cannon."

Steve turned toward his stunned comrades with characteristic understatement: "There's a lot about this shield you don't know yet."

Bly remained in a state of profound shock, murmuring with obvious envy: "I absolutely must acquire a shield like that for myself."

Steve smiled with genuine warmth: "Then I wish you the best of luck in finding vibranium somewhere in this galaxy."
