Chapter 74: Chapter 74: The Abandoned Mutant Academy
Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters isn't strictly within New York City; it's located in the suburbs of Westchester County, northeast of the city. It has been abandoned for nearly six years, and now, in the sprawling European-style mansion, only two people reside: its legal owner, Scott Summers, a.k.a. Cyclops, and Hank McCoy, a.k.a. Beast.
As usual, Scott sat on his bed, holding a photograph of the original five X-Men and Professor Xavier. After the Professor's death and Jean's disappearance, he tried to keep the team together, but eventually, everyone went their separate ways, leaving only him and Hank to guard the place.
"I miss you so much, Jean..."
After his daily expression of longing for his long-missing lover, he heard the doorbell ring through the intercom. Scott sighed helplessly; that woman was truly persistent. Didn't she understand that he could never allow her to acquire the Professor's last legacy?
"I've told you many times, Ms. Frost..."
"Clearly, whoever you're talking about, it's not me."
Nick Fury's voice came through the communicator. Cyclops looked up, then stood. He adjusted his ruby quartz visor and walked to the tightly shut main gate of the school. Through the gate, he saw Nick Fury and a young girl with him.
"More mutant business?"
"It has nothing to do with mutants. Tony Stark has a young Avenger who scheduled a medical check-up with you. I'm interested in it, just here to observe." Nick Fury watched Cyclops open the gate, then walked with Cindy into the perennially unkempt academy. "You look pretty good, at least you still have time to shave."
"Anyway, there's nothing for me to do. The world doesn't need the X-Men anymore. More and more mutants are choosing to go to Genosha instead of staying here." Cyclops sighed, leading the two into the half of the living room that was still functional, offering them two cans of coffee; he didn't have much else.
Nick Fury raised an eyebrow and set the coffee aside. Cyclops was about to say something when the doorbell rang again. He scratched his head. "Looks like the friend you're waiting for has arrived. Please wait a moment, I'll go get them."
Peter had indeed arrived. He was wearing his Spider-Man costume and had come to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters with Happy. Gwen had also tagged along. Peter tried to persuade her to go home, but as always, he couldn't make Gwen leave on her own.
"Isn't today Cindy's first day transferring?" Gwen asked in the car. "Didn't she transfer because of you? Won't she be disappointed if you're not there?"
"This is beyond my control, there's nothing I can do."
Happy honked the horn, and the two got out of the car. To their surprise, a black luxury sedan was already parked at the gate, and another opulent white supercar pulled up and stopped next to their car.
Oh, great, Gwen wasn't disguised. He hoped it wasn't anyone particularly troublesome getting out.
The sudden turn of events caught Peter off guard, and his hope was dashed, because it really was a very troublesome woman who emerged. She appeared to be under thirty, wearing a tight white gown that unashamedly showcased her curvaceous figure, matching white long boots, and a white fur stole. Everything about her seemed to be white; even her lipstick was an icy blue, making her look exceptionally alluring.
As she exited the car, she tossed her long golden hair, then removed her sunglasses, revealing a pair of captivating blue eyes.
"Spider-Man, what a surprise. You're here. Does this mean you're a mutant?"
More importantly, the woman was taller than Peter, about 1.8 meters, and she leaned against the hood of the sports car, looking at him. Peter suddenly felt his spider-sense tingle, then sharply explode, but nothing happened.
Instead, a look of surprise, then curiosity, appeared in her eyes. She glanced at Gwen beside him, then at Happy, who was trying to ingratiate himself with a sheepish smile.
Peter, of course, knew who this woman was.
"Ms. Emma Frost, I believe I've told you many times, Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters does not welcome you." Cyclops, Scott Summers, opened the door, looking sternly at the woman. "No matter what, I will not agree to the Hellfire Club or the Massachusetts Academy acquiring this place, neither the mansion nor the academy."
"Why not, Scott? Since you don't intend to continue Charles Xavier's legacy, why not choose to hand it over to someone more suitable?"
"The Hellfire Club? Go tell Sebastian Shaw again." Cyclops smiled, hands in his pockets, staring intently at Emma Frost through his visor. "He's not worthy!"
"Come in, children, Nick Fury has been waiting for you. And by the way, goodbye, Ms. Emma."
Turning directly and waving to Emma, Cyclops once again rejected her proposal. Peter could only shrug and follow with Gwen. They walked into the functional half of the living room, where he saw Nick Fury, and Silk by Fury's side.
When Nick Fury saw Gwen accompanying Peter, his gaze at Peter could be described as fierce, but in the end, he said nothing.
"Hey, you must be Cindy, right?" Gwen walked directly up to Cindy and extended her hand. "I'm Gwen, Gwen Stacy, Peter's best friend since childhood."
"Cindy Moon." Cindy politely shook her hand. After noticing Gwen sitting next to her, she pulled up her face mask. Gwen asked curiously, "Aren't you supposed to transfer today? Why aren't you at school?"
"A mission, related to Spider-Man."
Meanwhile, the blue-furred Beast drew Peter's blood and conducted tests in the practically ruined laboratory at Xavier's School, then gave Peter good news and bad news.
"First, you're not a mutant," Beast said jokingly, then explained seriously, "Second, your genes are very stable. Both of your special genes are stable, and they are interweaving, slowly fusing. Your current power loss is just a fluke. In just a few months, once your genes have fully fused, you'll regain control of your powers."
"A few months?"
"There is a way, though." As a doctor, Beast offered Peter another solution. "We need to use Nathaniel Essex's gene-splicing machine. He used it to create artificial mutants in the past. But the problem is..."
"The problem is there are only two left. One is in Genosha, and under current federal law, any travel to Genosha is illegal." Nick Fury knew exactly where it was. He watched Cyclops pick up and drink his untouched coffee, then revealed the whereabouts of the other gene-splicing machine: "The other one is in a troublesome place, a place where even S.H.I.E.L.D. can't fully guarantee safety and transparency: Madripoor."
"No trouble at all."
Cyclops tossed the can into a distant trash can, then turned to Fury.
"Logan's there."
