Chapter 71: CHAPTER 70: Pet

Happy times always seem to fly by...

The sun was already starting to set, casting its last golden rays over the pool. The atmosphere was calm, bathed in a gentle evening breeze. Sitting on a lounge chair, Arthur had already returned from his shopping, and tonight he planned to prepare a delicious carpaccio.

What is Carpaccio?

Carpaccio is a traditional Italian dish made with very thin slices of raw meat, usually beef, but it can also be made with raw fish (like salmon or tuna) or even vegetables, depending on the variation.

Arthur wanted to see what the two girls' reactions would be when they tried raw beef for the first time.

At that moment, he was quietly reading a book, oblivious to the world around him. Of course, he was paying attention to the two girls in the pool, but his focus was on the book.

Reading books was a good pastime, and it was also a great way to find inspiration for writing his stories. After all, writing only books he had read in his past life wouldn't get him anywhere.

It was then that Jean got out of the pool.

Her body was still dripping with water, reflecting the soft light of the evening. She wore a light blue swimsuit that accentuated every curve of hers perfectly, a choice that wasn't accidental. She walked slowly toward Arthur, with calculated steps and a slight smile on her lips.

"Hm..." Jean stopped next to him, leaning just enough for him to notice her, or at least have to notice her.

"Arthur, are you just going to sit there reading?"

Arthur lifted his eyes from the book with his usual calmness. His gaze briefly rose, met hers, then casually traveled down her drenched silhouette, so naturally that it almost seemed offensive.

"You seem to have enjoyed the pool," Arthur commented, before returning to look at the page. A small trace of a smile appeared on his lips before he quickly hid it.

He had already noticed the little game between the two.

Jean was momentarily speechless.

She had come with the intention of teasing him. To show off her beauty, her presence... to provoke some kind of reaction, it was all Gwen's idea, but she also wanted to see his reaction.

But Arthur acted like a wall of ice bathed in sunset light, firm, calm, and completely unshakable.

"Do you always get so serious when you're reading?" She insisted, trying to maintain her charm.

"Only when I'm focused on something interesting," he replied, not looking up again.

Jean raised an eyebrow. Was that a tease? A hidden compliment? Or was he just enjoying the situation?

"Interesting, huh? So what's more interesting? This book... or me?" she asked, crossing her arms with feigned indignation, making sure to draw attention to her posture.

Arthur then closed the book with a soft snap and finally looked her in the eyes, now with a subtle smile on his lips.

"Good question. But the comparison is a bit unfair, Jean. The book doesn't test me the whole time."

Jean opened her mouth, but no response came immediately.

She blinked, surprised. Then she realized. He had turned the tables effortlessly.

"Arthur... you're teasing me now, aren't you?"

"I'm just being honest," he replied, reopening the book as if nothing had happened.

Jean stood still for a few seconds, a mix of confusion and amusement, before letting out a defeated sigh.

"I should have known this would happen."

She turned back toward the pool, casting one last look over her shoulder before diving back into the water to join Gwen.

"I told you this wouldn't work..." she murmured to Gwen.

"If you had done it the way I said, it definitely would have worked," Gwen laughed as she spoke.

Even in the pool, Jean still felt the warmth of Arthur's calm and piercing gaze. And this time, she was the one whose cheeks turned slightly pink.

Arthur had won.

Again.

She had been trying to provoke him for a while, but she always ended up being the one provoked instead.

It was at that moment that Ruby appeared, interrupting the peaceful afternoon with a direct message.

[Gwen, your dad sent a message. He said he's picking you up now at Empire State University.]

Gwen, still in the pool, widened her eyes.

(Oh no... if Dad finds out I'm not at the university right now, he'll put me in a police interrogation room.)

"Arthur, I need to go back to the university... right now."

Arthur looked at her calmly, as if he had already expected this.

"Alright. Go change, I'll wait for you in the car."

"Jean, I'm leaving!"

Jean nodded with a slight smile. "Okay."

She knew exactly what was going on with Gwen. After their conversation earlier, she knew Gwen was still hiding everything from her family.

Jean gave her a quick hug and whispered, "If you need anything, just call me."

---

Outside Empire State University, George's black car was parked along the sidewalk.

He stared at the campus building as if observing a battlefield. Silent, but full of potential threats.

If it weren't for Peter's words... he probably wouldn't be there.

His wife was right, Gwen wasn't a child anymore. But still, it was hard not to worry. The world was getting stranger. And more dangerous.

Soon, he saw his daughter crossing the gate.

"Gwen, from now on I'm picking you up from school."

He didn't explain. George knew well how resistant Gwen could be to this kind of thing. It was better to take it easy.

"Okay," she replied without hesitation.

George glanced at her sideways. That was... too easy.

But he didn't push it. Gwen understood that her father only wanted to protect her. There was no need to turn this into an argument.

She had always been so sensitive... even when pretending to be tough.

In the car, their conversation flowed lightly for a while. George talked about an incident at the police station, Gwen listened, laughing at her father's exaggerations.

Then, in one of those silent moments between traffic lights, George suddenly asked:

"Gwen, do you know Arthur Morgan?"

Gwen froze for half a second.

Did he find out?!

"Of course," she said, composing her tone. "I'm a fan of his books."

George looked ahead, thoughtful. "I mean... do you know him personally?"

She took a deep breath. "Dad... why are you asking this now?"

"You mentioned he went to the university for a book signing. I just wanted to know if you actually spoke to him or something."

Gwen relaxed and let out a sigh of relief.

Phew... so that's all it is.

She opened her backpack and pulled out a copy of Harry Potter. She extended it to her father with a teasing smile.

"Look what I got."

George, curious, took advantage of the red light and turned to see. His eyes widened when he noticed the signature on the title page.

"Why Harry Potter?"

"What?"

Gwen made a confused face.

George frowned. "If you were getting his autograph, it should have been on A Song of Ice and Fire. That's the best."

[A/N: A Song of Ice and Fire is the book series that inspired Game of Thrones.]

She chuckled. "So now you're a fan of him too, huh?"

George tried to maintain his composure.

"Do you just call him Arthur now?"

"Everyone at the book club calls him that. He mentioned not liking formalities and stuff... And don't change the subject, Dad! You like his books too, right?"

George cleared his throat. "As your father, I don't like seeing you involved with these famous guys. These celebrities... It's all a mess."

Gwen turned her gaze to the window.

"Dad... about that..."

George stared at her for a moment, waiting.

"I... I'm dating."

The car seemed to fall silent with him. George kept his eyes on the road, but his attention was now fully on her.

"Dating?"

"Yeah. But I'll only introduce you when all this with Peter blows over, okay? When everything is more 'normal.'"

George blinked a few times. He tried to process.

"So you're waiting to introduce him because... he's involved with this situation?"

"It's not that!" Gwen hurried to say. "It's just... there's so much going on right now. I don't want to mess things up."

George went quiet for a few seconds. Very quiet.

Then he said:

"Does he have a driver's license?"

"Dad!"

George grunted.

"Sorry. I just need to know who you're hanging out with. It's my duty."

"I know... And that's why I'm waiting for the right time."

George nodded slightly. Still suspicious. Still cautious.

But he trusted Gwen. He always had.

"Okay... but don't hide anything from me."

"I promise."

Silence returned for a few moments, but this time it was comfortable.

Then George grumbled, not taking his eyes off the road:

"But seriously... You should have gotten his autograph on A Song of Ice and Fire."

Gwen laughed.

"Seriously, Dad?"

"Definitely."

"Alright then."

"I'll drop you off quickly. I still have some things to take care of at the station."

"Okay..."

She leaned back in the seat and looked out the window again, her thoughts floating between the past, the present, and Arthur.

Meanwhile, George drove in silence.

…And as the city passed slowly outside, Gwen couldn't help but smile to herself.

The signature in the book was real, yes, but what her father would never guess... was that Arthur had given it to her personally, in a much more intimate and meaningful afternoon than any book signing. Gwen sighed quietly, trying to hide the warmth in her cheeks.

George noticed his daughter's smile in the rearview mirror, but he didn't comment. He just smiled slightly to himself, content to see her apparently in a good mood.

He was still a little upset knowing his daughter had a boyfriend, but her happiness and well-being were still his priority.

---

Later that night, back at Arthur's house, he was in the kitchen, slicing the meat with surgical precision. The thin slices of carpaccio were already aligning perfectly on a porcelain plate.

Jean was sitting on the counter, her hair now dry, watching every movement with a mix of curiosity and expectation.

"Are you really going to make me eat raw meat?" she asked, trying to sound skeptical, but her curiosity betrayed her.

Arthur didn't lift his eyes. He just responded calmly:

"It's not just any raw meat. It's a new experience. And new experiences are valuable."

"You talk like it's easy to convince someone like that..."

"It's easy. You just have to trust the person who's cooking." Arthur glanced at her for a brief second, with that same calm and deep look that made Jean lose herself inside.

She bit her lower lip, unsure how to respond.

It was when Ruby appeared again.

[Arthur, I just received an update on George's movements. He's heading back to the station now.]

Arthur nodded, not looking surprised.

"And Gwen?"

[She's safe at her house. But she seems... thoughtful.]

"She'll be fine," Arthur said with his usual certainty. "She's stronger than she thinks."

Jean crossed her arms, suddenly serious. "You really like her, don't you?"

Arthur paused the cut for a second. A silence spread.

"She's special," he finally answered, returning to the task. "But that doesn't mean I'm indifferent to what happens to you, Jean."

Jean blinked, surprised. "What do you mean...?"

Arthur looked at her again, this time with a slight smile.

"You're important too. You just don't need to compete for something you already have."

Jean's face turned completely red. She went silent, trying to understand if that was a confession or just another one of Arthur Morgan's ambiguous statements.

Meanwhile, in her room, Gwen lay on her bed, hugging a pillow and staring at the ceiling.

She thought about how Arthur always said things that seemed simple, but touched her heart.

I watched Iron Man 2 today and realized a mistake—the race is in Monaco, not Morocco. For some reason, I had it in my head that it was Morocco.

Give me some power stones there you go~😉

Do you want to know why I didn't post anything here for so long? The reason was something completely stupid.I formatted my phone and my PC because somehow they got a virus and some unemployed person with nothing to do kept hacking some of my accounts... The problem is that I forgot to save the password for my email linked to this account in my notebook... Literally today I remembered that my old phone, which hasn't been on since last year, still had that account saved, all I needed to do was recharge its battery, turn it on, and then change the email password.
