Chapter 56: Chapter 56: Gratitude
OSCORP
Norman Osborn received two unwanted guests in his office that day.
They were George Stacy and Curt Connors, respectively.
After hearing the reason for their visit, Norman took a drag from the cigar he was smoking and sighed.
"Captain Stacy, would you like a cigar?"
"This is a Hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona. It arrived from Cuba recently."
"I appreciate the offer, but I don't smoke."
"Let's get straight to the point, Mr. Osborn."
"Our goal is to save Peter, and I hope you'll accept our proposal."
"But of course, Captain Stacy in person. I'm very happy to help." Norman had a smile on his face as he spoke.
Hearing Norman's response, Connors was quite pleased.
Norman Osborn agreed.
But George's expression darkened.
He wasn't stupid—he had dealt with this type of person for many years and knew very well that something was off.
He immediately sensed that there was something hidden in Norman's words.
Norman also noticed Connors's excitement and said, "Dr. Connors, don't get too excited just yet."
"Personally, I'd love to help Peter. I've met him and I know he's a very smart young man."
"But you have to understand, Oscorp doesn't belong solely to me. I still have to bring this to a meeting with the Board of Directors."
"The impact of this incident is very damaging to the company. You've probably seen the reports."
He said this while looking directly at George.
The meaning behind his words was obvious.
He suspected the police had leaked the information.
"I don't know how the media got this information. The police kept these records sealed very carefully."
"I believe you, Captain Stacy. But the police department is a large place—you can't control everyone."
"Mr. Osborn, how can you condone these experiments?"
Connors clenched his teeth and said, almost pleading.
George, beside him, remained silent. He knew it was probably impossible to get Norman's support.
Norman Osborn was a very cunning man.
He had refused their request in a diplomatic way.
Only Connors, obsessed with his research and inexperienced in these kinds of dealings, couldn't see it.
"Dr. Connors, you should know that Oscorp has invested a lot of money in your research."
"The board has wanted to pull your funding for a long time, and I always insisted that they shouldn't."
"Because of that, I've been under a lot of pressure."
"Now the Board of Directors has frozen all your research materials. If I go to the board for you..." Norman said with an offended tone.
"Dr. Connors, I know you're in a hurry, but don't rush things."
"You can't make this harder for me. I've done all I could. You can't blame me for what happened..."
"Norman Osborn, you..."
Even if Connors didn't understand everything, he could clearly grasp the hidden message in Norman's words.
Seeing Connors angry, Norman turned to George: "Captain Stacy, could you please escort Dr. Connors out?"
"He's not in the right state of mind for a conversation."
Connors had been completely manipulated by Norman.
George could only say, "Excuse us, Mr. Osborn."
"You're always welcome to stop by for coffee, Captain Stacy," Norman said.
George left without looking back.
After the two had completely exited the office, Norman smiled coldly. "This serum..."
"I have far better uses for it. How could I just hand it over so easily?"
Norman Osborn had his own pride as a scientist.
In his view, the failure of an experiment was already a defeat.
And including his student in that failure made it even worse.
This data—as well as the serum—belonged to Oscorp.
It was impossible for Connors to ever get them back.
What's more, Norman had read the experimental data.
It would also be of great use in his own experiments, making it even more unlikely that Connors would ever retrieve them.
After leaving the office, Connors spoke with a distant look in his eyes. "I'm sorry. I really thought Norman Osborn was a good man."
The two had met a few years ago at a scientific seminar, where Connors had shared his vision for future research.
Norman was impressed and began investing in it.
Since then, Connors had always seen Norman as a benefactor.
But now, it seemed that was no longer the case.
What Norman saw at first wasn't how much the research could impact the future of humanity—
It was the profit it could bring.
George patted him on the shoulder to comfort him. "It's not your fault. I didn't expect it either..."
"You should go home first."
At Oscorp's gates, George asked two officers who came with him to take Connors back.
Until everything was fully clarified, Connors would remain under police supervision.
George returned to his car.
"Captain, are we heading back now?"
Looking at Oscorp through the window, George shook his head. "No. I have a bad feeling."
"Let's stay here and keep watch for now."
"Are we spying on Oscorp?"
A sharper officer immediately understood what George was planning.
"Captain, is there something wrong with Oscorp?"
George nodded. "It's just my instinct. I don't know if I'm right or not."
"Either way, let's stay here a while. Luckily, we don't have any pressing cases right now."
During the conversation with Norman, George had sensed something strange—though he couldn't quite put his finger on it.
But he was sure there was something wrong with Oscorp.
In the car, George took out his phone and sent a message to Gwen and Helen, letting them know he wouldn't be home for dinner tonight.
In the city.
Spider-Woman, swinging through the buildings, noticed her phone vibrating and checked it to see if it was important.
Seeing George's message, she replied immediately, saying she wouldn't be coming back tonight either...
"This New York is really different from Miles' New New York," she murmured as she looked down at the city.
On the way to Oscorp, she had already stopped a few robberies.
"I have to get this done as soon as possible."
"And I still need to give that gift to Arthur." Her thoughts wandered back to a few moments before she returned to this universe.
When she arrived in this world, she had immediately left Arthur's house with a single goal in mind.
She knew that if she didn't steal that serum tonight, she wouldn't be able to save Peter.
At the same time.
The doors to Tony's lab finally opened after several uninterrupted hours of work.
As he walked out, Tony said with dark circles under his eyes, "Jarvis, I need sleep."
He hadn't rested for two days and an entire night.
[Welcome back, sir.]
[I've already prepared your room. I hope you get a good night's sleep.]
"I must be having a nervous breakdown," Tony thought as he passed his armor.
"How could my Mark 2 go missing?"
It had to be the sleep deprivation—neurasthenia.
[By the way, Mr. Morgan needs a print module.]
"Send it to him, Jarvis."
Tony waved his hand.
Even a hundred 3D printers wouldn't be enough to express Tony's gratitude toward Arthur at this moment...
