That familiar sensation returned—Charles once again sensed Wanda Maximoff.
At that moment, Wanda was practicing her powers, using red energy to manipulate a metal cube. As soon as she heard Charles's voice, her scarlet eyes returned to normal, and the red energy vanished. The metal cube she was controlling fell to the floor, shattering into countless tiny pieces the size of fingernails.
"Wanda, your abilities have improved again."
"Thank you."
Wanda responded happily, then suddenly spoke with a more serious tone.
"We're being taken for another ability test today."
Charles was silent for a moment. He understood what that meant.
"Be careful," he said.
"Don't worry," Wanda replied calmly with a hint of a smile. "Pietro's powers are great for escaping."
"Be especially cautious of the psychic field," Charles reminded her.
"I know," Wanda replied softly, then smiled and said, "Charles, thank you for teaching me these past few weeks. I've learned a lot."
After a pause, she continued,
"You're a responsible and great teacher. I hope we can meet in person someday."
"We'll get the chance."
A gentle smile appeared on Charles's face before he ended the connection.
Sensing that Charles had left, Wanda raised a finger. A faint red mist swirled around her fingertip, wrapping around the small scattered metal cubes and levitating them before her eyes, constantly changing their shape.
Suddenly, her locked door swung open.
"Wanda, time to go."
A man in a lab coat stood in the doorway.
Thanks to Charles's guidance, Wanda's abilities had grown far faster than expected—so much so that she deliberately held back in front of these people.
Her brother Pietro was no different.
Just then, another lab technician appeared at the door.
"Wanda, we need to go!"
Wanda waved her hand lightly, setting the floating metal pieces aside. The red glow in her eyes faded, and she rose to her feet to follow.
As she approached, the technician instinctively stepped back. His gaze was heated—as if he were admiring a flawless experimental subject.
Wanda's brow furrowed slightly, but her face remained expressionless as she followed behind him. Two soldiers pointed guns at her from behind as they led her out.
As they passed the next room, they encountered Pietro, who was also being escorted out.
The siblings exchanged a glance and smiled.
Pietro quickly scanned the soldiers and lab techs around them, then smirked mockingly.
"This is so pointless. If we didn't want to cooperate, do you really think you could stop us?"
Before anyone could react, he darted around at impossible speed, unseen, and in a flash had yanked down the pants of four soldiers and two researchers—before calmly returning to his spot.
"See? Just like that."
The victims yelped in surprise, scrambling to pull their pants back up.
Wanda couldn't help but curl her lips into a smile.
Pietro grinned in satisfaction when he saw her reaction.
Ignoring the flustered personnel, the twins obediently boarded the vehicle, heading toward the secret base where they had received their powers.
After acquiring their abilities, they were relocated from the original research base to the current training facility.
At first, Wanda and Pietro thought the change of location was simply to better train their powers. But now they suspected it was also to hide secrets from them—secrets buried within the original base.
As they sat in the vehicle, their expressions grew solemn.
What they were about to discover would determine their next move. But recalling their original intentions, both let out bitter smiles.
Their country—Sokovia—was a war-torn, chaotic land. Riots, protests, and bloodshed had become a way of life.
They had first encountered those people during a protest.
The strangers promised them extraordinary power, a better future. All they had to do was volunteer for an experiment.
If successful, they would gain powers to fight tyranny and end the conflict ravaging their country.
Many were persuaded and volunteered. Pietro and Wanda, too, were swayed by that hopeful vision.
They yearned for power that could bring peace.
In the end, they were lucky—they survived and gained extraordinary abilities.
In exchange, they allowed their data to be used for further research and let themselves be manipulated, all in the hope that their success would help others gain powers too… and that peace would finally come to Sokovia.
But now, they had learned from Charles that these people were Hydra.
It was a devastating blow.
If Charles was right, then they had been lied to from the beginning. Everything they believed in—their so-called mission—was nothing but a carefully constructed illusion.
They had to uncover the truth.
As the vehicle drew closer to the facility, Wanda could feel the psychic barrier that Charles had mentioned.
The field acted like a psychic shield, blocking all mental probes from the outside.
It had been created using energy from the Mind Stone scepter, which not only blocked telepathy but also interfered with satellite surveillance.
Fortunately, the barrier only blocked external interference. Once inside, Wanda's powers were no longer suppressed.
After arriving, the twins disembarked. Under the watchful eyes of armed guards, they were led toward the lab.
On the way, they saw several corpses being carried out.
Wanda's face turned pale. Pietro clenched his fists tightly.
After all, they were still just barely adults—still kids in many ways.
"Hey, my dear Wanda, Pietro!"
A familiar voice called out cheerfully.
Dr. List approached them with a warm smile.
Since the beginning of their transformation, Dr. List had been the one monitoring their power development. He was practically an old acquaintance now.
Despite the doctor's friendly demeanor, it was hard to believe someone like him could be a villain.
"So, Doctor… any new successes lately?" Pietro asked, unable to help himself.
Dr. List's eyes darkened slightly. He let out a sigh.
"There have been a few, but very few. You two remain our greatest successes."
In both potential and growth, the twins were his perfect test subjects.
Seeing their discomfort, Dr. List chuckled lightly.
"These are necessary sacrifices for the sake of peace."
Patting them both on the shoulder, he added with a smile,
"Come now. Let's proceed with the test."
The two nodded. Pietro grabbed Wanda's hand.
As they walked, Wanda subtly raised her hand. A nearly invisible mist of red energy flickered at her fingertips—and quietly slipped into Dr. List's mind.
