Chapter 19: Chapter 19 New Elements

"And can you guarantee that you won't put Miss Pepper Potts in danger? How long has it been since the Obadiah incident? If it weren't for Coulson, Miss Pepper would have been in serious trouble!" Nick Fury's voice was sharp as he berated Tony Stark.

"I'll protect her," Tony retorted, his voice defensive. "You don't need to worry about it."

Fury's piercing gaze didn't waver. "You're famous all over the world! Besides Peter Parker, the most recognized person on the planet is Tony Stark. Even the president isn't as famous as you. What makes you think you can keep her safe when everyone knows your name and face?"

For once, Tony fell silent. Fury's words, paired with his steely gaze, left Stark momentarily without a comeback.

"The Screen answered your question personally," Fury pressed. "What did you ask it?"

Tony's frustration bubbled over. "So what if I told you? Would you know the answer?" His voice was tight with irritation. "It said it's around me, but I've searched everywhere—my house, my lab—and I can't find the damn answer!" He grabbed a glass of chlorophyll juice from the table and threw it to the ground, the green liquid splattering everywhere.

Fury raised an eyebrow. "What's that? Since when do you drink anything remotely healthy?"

Tony's lips twitched in irritation. "You want to know? Fine!" He pulled off his shirt, revealing the glowing arc reactor embedded in his chest. The darkened veins surrounding it were unmistakable signs of palladium poisoning.

Fury's expression shifted. "Palladium poisoning? How long has this been going on?"

Tony sighed heavily. "Long enough. I've tried every combination of elements I can think of, but nothing works. I'm running out of time."

Fury leaned back, considering. "I think you haven't tried everything yet."

Tony's brow furrowed. "What do you mean? What haven't I tried?"

The tension in the room grew thick, but Fury said nothing more. Meanwhile, Stark Industries had become a hot topic, with reporters speculating about Tony's condition after The Screen's revelations. Faced with his deteriorating health, Tony made the difficult decision to hand over the CEO position to Pepper Potts. Her promotion touched her deeply, though she worried even more about Tony.

During this time, Natasha Romanoff, operating under the alias "Natalie Rushman," entered Tony's life. Her flawless resume and striking beauty immediately caught his attention. As a notary, she quickly impressed Tony with her sharp intellect and poise. Under Tony's approval, Natasha became his assistant, though her real mission was far more covert—observing and protecting him under orders from Fury.

Natasha's capabilities were evident from the start. During a sparring session, she effortlessly disarmed Happy Hogan, leaving Tony both impressed and intrigued. Her professionalism and charm made her a seamless addition to Stark Industries.

One evening, as Tony and Fury's conversation heated, Natasha entered the room wearing her tactical suit. "I've cut off all external communication from this location," she announced.

Tony stared at her, wide-eyed. "You're fired!" he blurted out.

Natasha smiled coolly. "That's not up to you." With Pepper now the CEO, Tony no longer had the authority to dismiss her.

Fury gestured toward Natasha. "This is Agent Romanoff. She's been undercover at Stark Industries to ensure your safety."

Tony groaned, rubbing his temples. "You could've at least given me a heads-up."

Ignoring his protests, Natasha retrieved a syringe and injected it into Tony's neck before he could react. "What are you doing? Are you harvesting my organs now?" Tony yelped.

Natasha's tone was calm and clinical. "It's lithium dioxide. It'll slow the effects of the palladium poisoning and buy you more time to find a solution."

Fury seized the opportunity to reveal Tony's connection to S.H.I.E.L.D. "Your father, Howard Stark, was one of the founders of this organization. He believed in your potential to finish what he started."

He handed Tony a box filled with Howard's old belongings. Inside were blueprints, newspaper clippings, and a recorded message. Fury left Agent Coulson behind to keep an eye on Tony, instructing him to stay put. "If you try anything funny," Coulson warned, "I'll stun you and watch you drool on the floor."

Tony rolled his eyes but complied for the moment. He delved into the contents of the box, poring over Howard's notes and watching the recorded films. One detail caught his attention—the 1974 Stark Industries Expo model. It wasn't just a piece of nostalgia; it was a blueprint for something greater.

Despite Coulson's objections, Tony insisted on retrieving the model from Stark Industries. With Coulson reluctantly accompanying him, Tony transported it back to his villa.

On the way, he met Pepper who was busy and overwhelmed, but because of the presence of Natasha and Coulson, Tony didn't talk to her too much.

Back at the villa, Tony examined the sand table closely. Its label read, "The key to the future is here." Inspired, he used Jarvis to create a digital model of the design. As the visualization unfolded, Tony realized that the model held the answer he'd been seeking. It was the blueprint for a new element.

Energized by this discovery, Tony set to work building a prism accelerator. With Coulson's reluctant assistance, the villa was transformed into a temporary lab. After meticulous calculations and countless adjustments, Tony successfully synthesized the new element. It would replace palladium in the arc reactor, saving his life.

News of Tony's breakthrough spread quickly. Fury received word from Coulson and allowed himself a rare smile. "He actually did it," Fury remarked, impressed. Yet, Tony's challenges were far from over. The Senate had called a hearing to demand answers about Stark Ironman Armor.
