Marrying a Disabled General and be His Wife

Chapter 76 - I

The epidemic made everyone feel as though they were facing a formidable enemy. Half a month had passed, and the source of the epidemic still couldn’t be found, but more and more people were falling ill.

Although the medicine prepared by Uncle Fu had some effect, it could not solve the root problem.

Moreover, the thing that worried Tan Chuyan the most occurred: the epidemic had mutated.

Initially, it only involved high fever and coughing, but now symptoms of ulcers had appeared.

Tan Chuyan saw firsthand a man who died with ulcers covering his body. Before his last breath, his entire body emitted a strong odor of decay.

The epidemic could not be allowed to develop unchecked. They needed to find the source as soon as possible and then prescribe the right treatment.

What could be causing the epidemic?

For the past half month, Tan Chuyan could not rest at all, continually searching for clues. He focused on the first person who was ill.

He initially wanted to find clues through the first patient’s living habits, but unfortunately, the first patient had already died, and his body was burned to ashes. And no one came to claim his ashes.

Therefore, no one knew where he had lived or whether he had any family.

The situation was becoming increasingly grim. Doctors were working around the clock, only pausing to rest when they could no longer stay awake, then resuming their preparations, decoctions, and administration of medicines.

Despite this, there were still far more people entering the academy for isolation each day than leaving it. The fire at the cremation site had never been extinguished, and there were more and more earthen jars being used to hold ashes.

No one could guarantee whether these urns would ever be claimed, but all they could do was preserve them so that the deceased could have a chance to return home.

As usual, Tan Chuyan would visit the mourning hall where the urns were kept to pay respects every day after work. Feng Chilie would time his visit to pay respects with him before they returned to the general’s mansion together.

After laying the incense, Tan Chuyan rubbed his sore eyebrows and asked, “Has anyone come to claim the urn of the old man?”

All they knew about the first patient was that he was an elderly man.

“Not yet,” Feng Chilie said. “I suspect he may not have had any family, or his family may not have been in the royal capital.”

Both of these possibilities were discouraging. If the old man had no family, the clue was dead. If he had family but they weren’t in Jing Kingdom, the clue might as well be dead because there was no way of knowing when the old man’s family would return.

The longer the epidemic continued, the worse it would be for them.

There was no way to completely hide a crisis. They could conceal the epidemic for a while, but not indefinitely.

Now, many people were becoming dissatisfied, whether they were civilians or soldiers.

Currently, Tianyou City could only be entered and not exited, and they had not found an effective way to deal with the epidemic. Continuing to block off Tianyou City was akin to leaving everyone to die.

However, they couldn’t afford to open up Tianyou City either.

They didn’t know how the disease spread. If it spread through the air, infected people would scatter in all directions, eventually causing everyone on the land to suffer.

Tan Chuyan could not let such a result happen under any circumstances. He had to withstand all pressure until the epidemic was fully resolved.

Perhaps due to the pressure, or maybe the days of hard work had taken too much of a toll on his body, Tan Chuyan, who was already in poor health, contracted the disease.

The disease struck like a storm. Tan Chuyan had a fever for three consecutive days, drank countless medicines, and vomited repeatedly. On the fourth day, his temperature finally subsided, and he temporarily escaped the state of lethargy.

Despite that, his throat still hurt terribly, and he felt weak.

During the past three days, all the burdens had fallen on Feng Chilie’s shoulders. Tan Chuyan didn’t even have a chance to see Feng Chilie.

But even though Feng Chilie was busy, he should still there to visit Tan Chuyan.

Tan Chuyan frowned, and his heart pounded.

He knew staying in the house and resting was the wisest choice, but Tan Chuyan lifted his sleeves and looked at his blackened arms.

This was a precursor to ulceration, and so far, none of the patients with ulceration symptoms had been saved.

How long could he stay with Feng Chilie?

No, he needed to see Feng Chilie!

Just one glimpse!

He sat up on the bed and instantly felt dizzy. He closed his eyes to steady himself.

To be honest, Tan Chuyan hated feeling so weak. It made him feel useless.

Yan Changfeng, who stayed with Tan Chuyan day and night, heard the movement from the bed and immediately opened his eyes.

“Young master!” Yan Changfeng supported him. “Tell me what you need, and I’ll get it for you.”

Tan Chuyan’s voice was extremely hoarse, and speaking was painful, so he spoke succinctly. “Clothes.”

Yan Changfeng didn’t move. “Young master, do you want to go out?”

Tan Chuyan didn’t answer; he just nodded.

“Young master, you need to rest.” Yan Changfeng frowned. “Your body is already weaker than others, and now that you’re infected, you mustn’t push yourself.”

Life and death were determined by fate and Tan Chuyan knew his situation. But he had to see Feng Chilie.

Seeing Yan Changfeng was immovable, Tan Chuyan got up on his own. He took clothes from the rack and dressed himself. Then he took the soft sword from the rack and fastened it to his waist.

Tan Chuyan had his own pride, and he didn’t want to appear in a compromised state when meeting others, especially Feng Chilie.

He carefully arranged his clothes and stepped outside.

Yan Changfeng stood in front of him. “Young master! The general told you to stay in! You must rest!”

“Yan Changfeng!” Tan Chuyan had always addressed him as Uncle Yan, but now, he was genuinely angry. He stared coldly at the man before him. “You’d better remember who your master is!”

“My master has always been you!” Yan Changfeng opened his arms to block his way. “But even if you kill me today, I won’t give in! You must rest!”

As their eyes met, Tan Chuyan threw a silver dagger from his sleeves, placing it against Yan Changfeng’s neck. “Move aside!”

Yan Changfeng didn’t budge. “No!”

Tan Chuyan pressed harder, and Yan Changfeng’s neck began to bleed. “I’ll say it one more time: Move!”

Yan Changfeng repeated, “No!”
