Chapter 2: TORTURED
IVAN’S POV:
When I was looking at my doll, I felt a hand on my shoulder. It was Marina. She was looking at me with a sad expression and signaled me to come outside, then left with Mario, giving me some time alone with my doll. I knew sitting here wouldn’t give me the answers, so I kissed her forehead and went outside the room. I saw a chair in the hallway and knew it was for me. I went and sat on the chair, burying my face in my palms.
After some time, when I had regained my composure, I looked up and saw Mario and Marina looking at me with the same pitying expression that Marina had given me earlier. I nodded my head, and they understood me. Then my other men placed two chairs in front of me, and both Marina and Mario sat down and began to explain what I needed to know.
“First, please control yourself, Ivan. We know seeing her for the first time like this is painful, but you need to be strong for her. She was too broken, and I felt it when she spoke to me,” Marina said, and I looked at her, confused.
“She talked to you?” I asked, incredulously.
“Yes, when I was rescuing her. She didn’t say much, but she mentioned that she needed to save her mom and dad and that she didn’t want to live without them. Sadly, we found her mom and dad dead,” she said, which shocked and confused me.
She rescued her, but from whom? When I saw my doll like that, I thought it was an accident, but what was Marina talking about, and how was I going to tell my doll that her parents were dead? Mario started to speak after noticing my confusion.
“It was the same gang that’s been playing with us. When you left for the café, we found some information from the body of the man you killed this morning. We discovered a hidden tattoo on his right calf resembling a shark. We began gathering information about that tattoo. It represents a powerful American mafia gang, and that man was working for them. We immediately located a hideout for that gang in Samara. We went there just wanting to have a talk with the second boss, as he’s also here. When we met him, he demanded that we hand over our gang to him. Even though we were angry, we didn’t attack; we stayed silent. But during our conversation, I saw some men from that gang dragging a girl by her hair. She was crying for help,” Mario said, and my anger rose immediately, knowing he was talking about my doll. But I let him continue to hear the full details.
“When I was able to see her face, I thought she looked familiar, but then Marina whispered to me that the girl was none other than your dream girl. We also confirmed this by comparing a photo of her on my phone, which I took from your room. Before the second head of the gang could realize what was happening, I instructed our men to attack them, and Marina went to save your dream girl. We don’t know how she ended up in their hands, but Marina told me her parents were also there, so we searched for them after taking down the second boss and other members. We found them dead in one of the rooms. We retrieved their bodies and admitted your dream girl to the hospital. We’ll only be able to learn what happened after your girl wakes up, or we’ll have to wait for that second boss to come to us demanding answers or to attack us,” he explained, and I immediately hugged both of them for what they had done for me.
“Thank you. Thank you so much. I don’t know what I would have done if you both hadn’t rescued her. Thank you for bringing her to me,” I said, but they punched my shoulders.
“You idiot, she’s not only your dream girl but also my sister,” Marina said, and I smiled, knowing her words were true. She had always called my doll her sister.
“In case you forgot, she’s also my sister-in-law,” Mario said, smacking my shoulder again.
“Fine, let’s go and meet the doctor,” I said, and they both nodded.
Mario and I went to meet the doctor, while Marina offered to stay with my doll. Two doctors were assigned to care for her. When we stepped into the doctor’s office, they stood up, as they had been discussing something seriously. And I wished none of this had happened to my doll. We both took seats, and I asked the doctors to sit down as well.
They didn’t speak at first, but then Mario demanded answers, so they started explaining my doll’s condition. As they talked, I found myself crying, with Mario’s hand on my shoulder. She had been brutally beaten all over her body except for her face. They had given her electric shocks; her body was too weak, and even some bones were broken. I clenched my fist and punched the glass table in front of me. The glass shattered, and the doctors stood up in shock.
Mario also stood and started yelling at me, but all I could think about was the death of those who had done this to my doll. Then the doctors said something that made both Mario and me look at them in shock and disbelief. I didn’t know what was happening around me. I found myself being dragged out by Mario. He took me to another room and made me sit on the couch. He bandaged my wound while I simply sat, wondering what I was going to do. What the doctors had said kept ringing in my ears, and then Mario said something that confused me.
“We just need this,” Mario said, showing me something on his phone and I know I was going to jump in the deep pit.
