Chapter 17: Chapter 14

Esther Mikaelson
With a flourish, Elijah had quickly shifted the attention of the guests. Standing on the staircase, all her children gathered around her as Elijah began to address the locals of this era.
"Welcome, thank you for joining us."
He paused.
"You know, whenever our mother brings our family together like this, it is tradition to commence the evening with a dance. Tonight's pick is a centuries-old waltz. So, if all of you would join us in the ballroom..."
General POV
"Shall we, sweetheart?" asked Klaus.
She took his hand, stating boldly, even though her heart sped up, "We shall."
As they were dancing, he whispered in her ear,
"I'm glad that you came."
"So am I, and I wanted to ask something."
Something flickered in his eyes—that was the problem with handling Mikaelsons: they were all a hair-trigger away from causing mayhem.
"Why would the Original Hybrid save a baby vampire, one that was supposed to be sacrificed in his own ritual?"
She was really trying to concentrate on him rather than his touches, as they were causing goosebumps and tingles all across her body.
"Hmm, I suppose I liked the strength you showed, even though you resigned yourself to die that night."
After a pause, he said, "You look ravishing in that dress."
He complimented her seriously, with warmth in his tone.
"Well, I didn't have time to shop for a dress."
He could tell it was a lie, an amused smile on his face.
'That bastard Kol,' she thought. 'He must have been the one who tattled—he looked like he'd heard a big joke while I was buying that dress for the ball.'
"You're quite the dancer, love," Klaus said as he gripped her more firmly, without being an ass about it.
"Well, I've had training. I'm Miss Mystic Falls," she replied with a challenge in her tone.
"I know." He laughed, clearly amused.
"And this town surely was lucky to have crowned such a divine beauty."
After finishing the initial dance, she left him alone so he could mingle with the crowd.
As she roamed the gardens, she stopped near a pair of horses. They were beautiful. At first, they were spooked, but eventually, they allowed her to pet them.
It had been so many years since she'd seen a horse.
"You like horses?"
She was spooked.
He was certainly the predator.
She wanted to be angry, to throw all the vitriol at him she could, but remembered how Bex told her to keep an open mind. It was the least she could do for the girl who had taught her more about vampirism than those buffoons, the Salvatore brothers.
"Klaus, why am I here?" she asked, annoyed.
"I fancy you. Is that so hard to believe?"
"Yes," she answered honestly. She was an 18-year-old girl who had been killed at 17, had faced life-threatening issues, and suffered so much torture she already felt it had been more than five years. So yes, she couldn't believe an honest-to-god 1,000-year-old vampire could think she was anything special.
He looked at her sincerely.
"Why? You are strong, beautiful, and full of light. I enjoy you."
She was flustered—damn him. That was some epic flirting, honed into a bloody art.
She avoided his eyes, looking around instead. She was sure her heart couldn't handle much more.
"Well, don't," she replied bitingly, focusing on the horse. She could feel her ears tingling—she was blushing, and she knew he knew it.
His hand came to adjust her hair and then cupped her cheek. He looked into her eyes until she backpedaled after being in a daze for a little while.
"My apologies. Where is your boyfriend?"
"I came alone."
"So you are unspoken for."
His happiness was evident in his tone, his eyes alight as if it was the most joyous thing he had heard all day. He looked at her for a while, then moved his gaze to the horses.
"You know, horses are the opposite of people. They are loyal. My father hunted me and my siblings for a thousand years. He was cruel, even when we were children. But the closest he came to killing me was by killing my favorite horse. He severed its neck with a sword and put it on a stake for display, so I would remember never to be close to anyone, as no one would be safe. A message."
"I apologize, Caroline. It's a gloomy tale."
"Your father was a raging asshole."
"That he was. But my family tends to be complicated. To answer your question: yes, I like horses, but I also like people. I'll be inside."
She stammered, unable to muster bossiness under his gaze. After she fled, Kol appeared with a rum bottle in hand and a glass.
"Well, congratulations, Nik." He poured a glass for Klaus.
"And what am I being congratulated for?"
"Well, you are going in the right direction for now, it seems. And cheers for killing Mikael."
Klaus raised his glass in return.
"How many times will you cheer for his death, Kol?"
Kol grinned. "Oh, I'm sure I'll get bored of his death in the next millennium. I took my pound of revenge, but since he hid the stake when he came after me, I couldn't end him then and there."
"What do you mean you took a pound out of him?"
Kol smirked. "Well, those were the days I was using a fake identity as a member of the Tepes family. I became a count of a town and even loved a woman. Adrianna was a witch, a mesmerizing woman with a heart of gold. She saw both the man and the monster in me and accepted them without question.
"When I was discussing business with the local covens, Mikael compelled the town to kill all the residents in the castle. Afterward, I massacred the town by impaling them all. I hunted Mikael down with some apprentices and Adrianna's friends. Since there was no stake with him, I couldn't trust those witches to end him, so I locked him in a tomb.
"I sent a blonde woman resembling Freya to him, cursed so that Mikael would kill her in new ways repeatedly and experience the agony of Freya's death in myriad forms."
Klaus was open-mouthed.
"So you're telling me you sauntered around as Dracula?!"
Kol groaned.
"Yes, and I also made coffins famous among vampires."
Klaus raised an eyebrow.
"Why would you even do that?"
"Well," Kol said with a smirk, "I was pissed about Finn's daggering. Even though I understood it, Finn is an idiot—a gullible Viking who only follows orders. But since I couldn't retaliate directly, I decided to make it inconvenient for you all."
He gestured grandly.
"I spread the idea that vampires liked to sleep in coffins. If you happened to dagger us and some poor bloke stumbled across the coffins, there was at least a chance he'd open them and wake us up. It was my little insurance policy."
Klaus stared at him, a mix of disbelief and amusement on his face.
"Odin! And they call me the scourge of the supernatural world."
Kol laughed.
"Well, they'd be afraid to give me a title. If they dared, I'd surely invent some magic—like that from these Harry Potter books, was it?—and create a taboo around the title. Invoke it, and they'd feel pain. Where do you think this woman got the idea for that type of magic?"
