Caroline Forbes
Caroline turned onto her side in bed, the familiar room still haunting her. Tears pooled at the edges of her eyes as she remembered how Damon had abused her—excruciatingly, with precision. Now, her best friends, the ones she considered sisters, were okay with him. She had tried so many ways to work around the compulsion, but nothing had worked.
Maybe this was what Rebekah meant about broadening her perspective. Her father, himself, would rather die than become a vampire.
She even remembered how he tortured her for the safety of others… the vervain, the sunlight,
the pain...
Caroline couldn't hold back the sobs flinching every so often.
No one was at home, just like it had always been since her parents divorced. She had been there for Bonnie and Elena through their vulnerable moments, but Bonnie seemed to care more about others than her. Bonnie had given her a daylight ring with conditions attached—an ugly one, the one Stefan had to bargain for her. She believed a mass murderer over the girl with whom she had grown up, and later, she found out she was the reason Damon's blood was in her system.
Now, neither Bonnie nor Elena was telling her how Elena was moving toward Damon so easily.
Then there was Klaus—a terrifying figure. She understood that the moment he stepped into this town.
The only reason she had been so brave at the time of the werewolf bite was that there was nothing left in her except courage and a little hope that one day, she could live a good life.
She couldn't imagine life in the next decade, let alone a century. And how Bonnie had reassured Elena when it was she who had been betrayed at the Grill yesterday.
"Don't worry, Caroline. She will never betray us. It'll be okay. You'll go to the ball and figure out Esther's plan."
Caroline still didn't understand the obsession with Elena.
After a long time of sobbing, indulging in casseroles, grieving the father she used to love as a child, and drinking cheap wine with ice cream, she let go of it all. Caroline Forbes—the girl who had been killed, abused, and tortured after her rebirth—was done with this bullshit.
It was time to live for herself. No one else seemed ready to put her first, so it was time she did. For her own good.
Mikaelson Manor
Niklaus Mikaelson stood with a drink in hand, talking to a few guests. He felt free after a millennium of being cursed and now also free from his father's yoke. He had survived the last 1,000 years, managing to ensure his family survived as well. Now, it was time to live a little before moving on.
He had invited the baby vampire who possessed impressive strength, even as she stared death in the face without fear. That had enthralled him. It had been a very long time since someone had enchanted him like this. So, he sent her an invitation.
Even the training was a way for her to have less influence from the doppelganger's gang of misfits.
'They're all children,'
Klaus mused, thinking about them. 'They think I don't know they're searching for ways to kill me. Not only that, but the White Oak has already been burned down by Kol.'
Then he wondered where Rebekah had learned to set things on fire.
Kol and his antics
as he blew out a breath
A familiar heartbeat drew his attention. He leaned in, sensing someone entering the hall.
There she was—a vision in blue, wearing the dress he had given her. She truly was a sight. He unconsciously licked his lips, knowing she would look divine in that dress.
But seeing is believing, I suppose.
He walked toward her, a champagne flute in hand.
"Good evening," he greeted her, taking in her beauty. What an enchanting woman she was.
He expected hostility, but she smiled, took the flute from his hand, and sipped from it.
"Klaus," she greeted him, and he raised an eyebrow.
He asked for her hand with a gesture, maintaining eye contact as he kissed her hand.
"Care to take a walk, love?" he offered smoothly, extending his hand.
She looped her arm around his.
"Okay then," she replied.
"How was Rebekah's outing with Kol?" he asked with amusement in his eyes.
Caroline thought to herself, He sure has the bad boy look down, huh?
"What are you thinking, love?" Klaus asked, his gaze intense as he looked into her eyes.
Caroline smirked. "I was thinking how it should've been. Because of you, the term 'handsome rogue' was invented."
She was being cheeky, and Klaus knew it. He laughed, genuinely amused by her banter. This was much better than he had expected. Being a thousand-year-old vampire made him an expert in reading body language, but since his wolf was unbound, he could smell heightened emotions as well. The combination allowed him to perceive that she was being genuine. That surprised him.
Esther Mikaelson
Esther watched her children, who had become abominations, as they mingled among the invited crowd except for Finn, who remained close at hand. Her sweet son.
When she came back to life, she had wanted to end their lives immediately, but she knew they possessed both her and her husband's cunning. Hence, when she planned to make it a sort of family reunion, she intended to stay and further her plans.
Kol had just had to break her—the amount of vitriol her child had for her...
The sweet warlock child. Oh, how she loved him, as she loved all her children.
But Kol had been the one she wanted to be closest to.
He had always brought joy to their home, a home that had been built out of misery, caused by Mikael.
Even now, she knew Kol couldn't bring himself to turn her into one of the abominations because he didn't want to inflict the pain he had felt—the pain he had endured.
She had been against using his grief against him to perform the spell, but Mikael had insisted. Kol would unnecessarily drag it out and it would have been a waste of time, according to him.
But Esther knew, had he gone through the original spell for vampirism by himself, Kol would've made sure his magic remained with him.
She still remembered the screams of Kol's anguish after he was turned unable to feel his magic just after losing his brothe whom he raised as his son.
He had been feral and explosive.
Esther had thought he would put an end to Mikael if he had still been human.
Kol was a better warrior than Mikael, but he always relied on magic while fighting. At that time after being turned, when he didn't have it, he bided his time to plot mikaels death she still remembers seeing his eyes as cold as Helheim.
The anger he projected toward her, the rapid changes in subjects when he spoke after her resurrection,
meant something was going to change—or already had.
He was less burdened than he had been when he last spoke to her.
Esther knew she needed to speed up her plans. Who knew what her child, who courted disaster only to laugh at it, would do next?
