Chapter 1452: Valerie and Laverre City
After chatting with Ayamu for a while and confirming that she was alright, Yuga spent the night at Zenith Academy as arranged by Teacher Chiffon.
The next day, as Yuga walked through the academy, he could still hear the students discussing the recent incident. Fortunately, no one had been harmed, and with the timely reassurance provided by the school, no serious unrest had broken out.
However, since no one knew the cause of the incident and the upper administration remained tight-lipped, it was inevitable that curiosity ran rampant.
After meeting with Fontaine, Yuga expressed his intention to take his leave. Knowingi Yuga was in a hurry to find the Arche Valley and resolve the issue concerning Chimecho, Fontaine didn't try to persuade him to stay longer.
As a token of gratitude for Yuga's assistance during the crisis, Fontaine took Yuga to Zenith Academy's Ecopark and allowed him to choose a Pokémon to take with him.
Zenith Academy, as the descendant of an ancient civilization with an unbroken lineage, might not be as prominent as the Dragon Tamer clan, but it still had a deep and rich heritage. While Pokémon with blue or indigo potential were rare, those with green potential were quite abundant.
After much deliberation, Yuga gritted his teeth and chose a Flabébé.
He already had the Flabébé evolutionary line in his Ecopark—obtained from Lysandre, in fact—but their breeding rate was slow, and even now, their numbers were limited and nowhere near the level needed to start selling them. So, Yuga wanted to expand their population.
Since Yuga had truly done a huge favor for Zenith Academy, Fontaine was exceedingly generous this time and directly gifted him eighty Flabébé with green potential—nearly half of their entire population in the Ecopark.
From the pained expression on Fontaine's face, Yuga could tell just how reluctant he was to part with them. But Yuga simply pretended not to notice. After all, who would willingly give up such a good deal?
Since he was heading to Arche Valley and couldn't return to Verdanturf Town for now, Yuga entrusted the selected Pokémon to Mr. Harrison, asking him to take them back and hand them over to Duo Duo for management.
Mr. Harrison would be staying at Zenith Academy for a few more days. He and Mr. Ross were both getting on in years, and it wasn't easy for them to make a trip back here—of course they had to take the opportunity to spend more time with their friends. So it was inevitable that he would part ways with Yuga for now.
Before Yuga's departure, Mr. Fontaine, Mr. Harrison, Teacher Chiffon, Ayamu, and others came to see him off.
"Gym Leader, you've finally come here once—can't you stay a couple more days before leaving?" Ayamu said reluctantly.
To her and her siblings, Yuga was like a parental figure, so her heart was full of admiration and affection for him.
Yuga gently patted her head to comfort her and said, "I still have something very important to deal with, and time is tight. I have to go. I'll come back to visit you next time when I get the chance."
"Then please be careful on the road," Ayamu replied in a low voice, her lips pressed together, saying no more.
After bidding farewell to everyone one by one, Fontaine stepped forward holding a wooden box. He opened it, revealing the diamond-shaped crystal left behind after Mew's death.
"Mr. Fontaine, this is…" Yuga looked at the crystal in the box with confusion.
Fontaine explained, "Mr. Shimizu, I would like to ask you to bring this stone to the Arche Valley and let them examine it to see if there's anything wrong with it.
I always feel that this stone gives off an especially ominous aura—just looking at it makes one feel deeply disturbed."
Yuga took the box and said, "I will."
Not just Fontaine—Yuga himself could sense the volatile Legendary Aura contained within the crystal. Whatever it was, it didn't feel good.
"Then I'll leave it to you!" Fontaine let out a sigh of relief.
Yuga took the wooden box, closed it, then released his Breloom, asking it to carry the jar that held the sealed Unown. And so, the trainer and his Pokémon departed from Zenith Academy.
After leaving Zenith Academy, Yuga found a secluded place, stored the clay pot into the system space, then recalled Breloom back into its Poké Ball, and finally made his way to the riverside where he had passed by earlier.
Releasing Lapras, Yuga jumped onto its back. After stabilizing himself, he said, "Lapras, let's go!"
This time, Yuga's destination was Laverre City. According to the information given by Mr. Fontaine, Arche Valley lay to the east of Laverre City.
A few days later, by dusk, Yuga, covered in dust from travel, finally arrived at Laverre City and checked into the Pokémon Center.
Because he had been traveling non-stop, Yuga hadn't gotten proper rest these past few days. So, the moment he arrived at the Pokémon Center, he booked a room and collapsed onto the bed without even taking a bite to eat. He slept deeply until late at night.
Around 2 AM, a rustling sound suddenly came from within Yuga's room. Gengar and Mismagius, who had been assigned to guard the room, were very alert and immediately located the source of the disturbance.
It turned out someone had broken into Yuga's room.
As the intruder in black nightwear climbed in through the balcony, they were immediately met with a pair of crimson eyes glowing brightly in the darkness—extremely eye-catching and terrifying.
The intruder was startled but managed to remain calm, immediately covering their mouth to suppress a scream.
"Heehee~"
Seeing the scare tactic wasn't fully effective, Gengar let out an eerie, chilling laugh.
At that moment, the intruder felt something tapping on their shoulder from behind. A sudden chill ran through their entire body as they slowly turned around—only to meet a pair of golden eyes.
The next second, those golden eyes burst forth with intense light, and a ghostly head wreathed in bluish flames suddenly appeared. It opened a massive bloody mouth and lunged toward the intruder, who immediately fainted with a sharp tilt of their head from fright.
Seeing the intruder pass out, the ghost flames and the ghostly head vanished. Mismagius slowly revealed its figure. Turns out, the terrifying ghost head was merely an illusion conjured by Mismagius.
Most Mismagius are innately skilled in illusion manipulation—considered a racial talent.
However, Yuga's Mismagius wasn't particularly talented in illusions, so it never used them in battles due to minimal effect. But for scaring people, it was still more than adequate.
"Heeheehee…"
The intruder's fainting greatly pleased the two Ghost-type Pokémon. The room soon echoed with their eerie, alternating laughter.
"Mmm… What's going on?"
Just then, Yuga's voice rang out, followed by the click of the light switch. It turned out Yuga had woken up after getting a full night's rest.
Only now did Gengar and Mismagius remember that Yuga had been sleeping. They quickly covered their mouths.
"What are you two up to?" Yuga asked, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.
"Gengar~ Gengar~"
Gengar immediately pointed to the intruder dressed in black lying on the floor to explain.
"An intruder?" Yuga looked carefully and sure enough, there was a person dressed in nightwear lying there. "Where did he come from?"
Gengar and Mismagius shook their heads in unison, indicating they didn't know.
"Dressed like this and sneaking into someone else's room in the middle of the night—definitely not a good person!" Yuga checked the time and saw it was just after 2 AM, then said.
"Gengar~ Gengar~"
"Mismagius~ Mismagius~"
Gengar and Mismagius nodded eagerly in agreement.
"Wait, do you hear any noises outside?" Yuga asked and gestured for Gengar and Mismagius to be quiet.
Sure enough, there were footsteps outside.
"Let's go check it out."
Yuga quickly got dressed and walked out of the room.
As soon as he stepped outside, Yuga was surprised to see that even in the middle of the night, there were police officers moving about inside the Pokémon Center. Even more surprising, the Gym Leader of Laverre City, Valerie, was also there.
At that moment, Valerie also spotted Yuga. Her face lit up with astonishment as she quickly approached and said, "Gym Leader Shimizu, what are you doing here?"
The two of them knew each other, which was why Valerie was able to notice Yuga at a glance.
"I just arrived yesterday evening, had some business to attend to," Yuga replied, then asked, "What are you all doing in the middle of the night?"
Valerie thought their movements had woken Yuga up, so she apologized with a guilty look on her face: "Sorry for disturbing your rest. Here's what happened…"
It turned out that recently there had been a mysterious thief appearing in Laverre City, often sneaking out in the dead of night to steal things. Yesterday, the police received a tip saying that the thief would appear at the Pokémon Center tonight, so Valerie and the others set up an ambush here.
Sure enough, the thief showed up in the middle of the night, but during the capture process, the police made a mistake and ended up letting the thief escape again.
After hearing this, Yuga looked surprised and thought to himself: Could it be that the person they're trying to catch is the one currently lying in my room?
So he said to Valerie, "Gym Leader Valerie, please wait for me here." After saying that, he ran back to his room.
Not long after, Yuga came back with Gengar, dragging a person behind him. He tossed the person at Valerie's feet and said, "Gym Leader Valerie, take a look. Is this the person you were looking for?"
Valerie recognized the thief at a glance and said excitedly, "It's him! I didn't expect him to end up in your room!" Her face showed mixed feelings as she spoke.
After handing the person over to the police, Valerie thanked Yuga gratefully: "Thanks to you, Gym Leader Shimizu. Otherwise, he would've slipped away again tonight!"
Valerie had been troubled for several days trying to catch this person!
Yuga waved his hand and said, "It's nothing, just a small favor."
Still full of gratitude, Valerie said, "Gym Leader Shimizu, if you need anything while you're in Laverre City, feel free to come find me at the Laverre Gym anytime."
Thinking about the matter of Arche Valley , Yuga's mind lit up with an idea: "There actually is something I'd like to trouble you with, Gym Leader Valerie."
Valerie said, "Please go ahead, Gym Leader Shimizu."
Yuga asked, "I wonder if Gym Leader Valerie has ever heard of a place called Windrest Ravine? It should be somewhere near Laverre City."
Arche Valley was located within Windrest Ravine. Yuga thought that since Valerie was a local from Laverre City, she might know the place. Asking her would be better than wandering around aimlessly like a headless fly.
"Hmm… I really haven't heard of such a place," Valerie said after thinking for a long time but still failing to recall the location.
Yuga was visibly disappointed upon hearing that, but then something occurred to him: "Right, that's an old name. It might not be called that anymore."
The people from Arche Valley hadn't been seen outside for more than two hundred years, so Windrest Ravine might very well be known by a different name now.
"I see," Valerie said, pondering for a moment. "Our Laverre Gym has a lot of ancient texts, and some of them are local chronicles of Laverre City. How about I take you there tomorrow to have a look?"
In truth, Valerie wasn't a native of Laverre City — she wasn't even from the Kalos region. She had been transferred here by the League from the Johto region, so it wasn't surprising that she didn't know about Windrest Ravine.
Yuga thought about it and responded, "That works too. I'll visit the Laverre Gym tomorrow."
Although he was in a hurry, it was still the middle of the night after all.
After chatting with Yuga for a while longer, Valerie saw that it was getting quite late, so she said her goodbyes and left the Pokémon Center.
The next morning, Yuga went to visit the Laverre Gym. Valerie had already informed them in advance, so by the time he arrived, someone was already waiting for him at the gym's front gate.
Waiting for Yuga was a young girl, probably around fifteen or sixteen years old. She should be an apprentice of the Laverre Gym. She clearly recognized Yuga and immediately stepped forward and said: "Gym Leader Shimizu, our Gym Leader is already waiting for you."
Yuga smiled and said, "Then I'll trouble you to lead the way."
The young girl had never seen much of the world, and she was instantly captivated by Yuga's handsome smile. Her face flushed red as she whispered, "You… please… follow me." Then she led Yuga into the Gym.
The Laverre Gym was located right in the center of Laverre City. It was built around an ancient tree and served as a landmark of the city.
This was a gym with a long history. Although it wasn't a legacy gym like Lavaridge Gym or Sootopolis Gym, in terms of how long it had existed, it was by no means inferior. That's why it held a large number of ancient books.
On the way to guiding Yuga, the young girl kept sneaking glances at him. Yuga noticed it, but he didn't say anything.
Not only the girl leading the way, but Yuga also noticed a few other girls hiding elsewhere who were also secretly peeking at him. Their eyes were full of curiosity, but they were all scared off by the leading girl's secret glares.
Yuga quickly met with Valerie.
"Sorry to trouble you," Yuga said.
Valerie joked, "Being troubled by you is an honor in itself! Let me take you to the library!"
The library of the Laverre Gym was located at the back of the gym and covered a very large area. However, it only had one floor and, just like the rest of the gym, had a classical and elegant charm to it.
Once they entered, Yuga saw books everywhere, with rows upon rows of neatly arranged bookshelves. The entire library was like a sea of books.
"How about I get the people in the gym to help you search together? Otherwise, with so many books, who knows how long it would take to find something," Valerie suggested.
Aside from the people who clean and manage it, the library of the Laverre Gym usually had no visitors. So, it didn't have any of the convenient search systems that modern libraries have. If you wanted to find something, you could only rely on manual labor.
Of course, Yuga only needed to look for local records, so he didn't need to go through every book. The local records were stored separately, though there were still quite a few of them.
Yuga didn't expect the collection here to be so vast, so he could only nod and say, "Then I'll trouble you, Gym Leader Valerie."
Very soon, Valerie gathered all the gym apprentices of the Laverre Gym to help out, including the young girl who led Yuga.
Valerie was not only the Gym Leader but also a well-known fashion designer. So her apprentices weren't just young and beautiful girls, but they also served as her models.
Once everyone was present, they began searching through the local records one by one, looking for the place called "Windrest Ravine."
