Chapter 41 - Light and Shadow (2)
“I want to be a healer…”
“What are you saying? Do you even know how bad a job healer is?”
“I want to be like you, sister.”
“I told you not to call me sister.”
“But you are my sister.”
Alec looked at Yona and Rubina, who were engaged in what he saw as a strange and pointless argument, and sighed softly.
It had been two weeks since they left the village with Rubina.
They had worried that Rubina, just 10 years old and small in stature probably due to malnutrition, might not be able to keep up on their journey.
But those worries seemed unfounded as Rubina had been keeping up quite well.
Even Kairoc, while pretending not to, was subtly taking frequent breaks and taking care of Rubina.
But Yona, in particular, was arguing with Rubina every day.
“You should become a priest, a priest, I’m telling you!”
“I’m going to be a healer.”
“I told you being a healer is not good.”
“But I want to be like you.”
“I told you I’m not your sister.”
“But-”
Alec finally spoke to Yona, who was endlessly arguing even while walking.
“…Yona, this conversation never ends. It’s not like Rubina can become a priest or healer just because she wants to.”
It depends on what results come out on the day of assessment.
No, even before that, we don’t know if Rubina has holy power or not.
Yet Yona is getting worked up and playing around like a ten-year-old child just because Rubina said she wants to be a healer.
“But this kid, leaving aside the comfortable path and insisting on being a healer…”
“That’s why I’m asking why you said such things.”
“Did I know this would happen?”
Yona finally trailed off.
It seems that Rubina was deeply impressed by Yona’s performance while dealing with the Gnoll pack they encountered just last night.
-This big brother is a healer, you know. A very capable healer. I’m the one who heals everything so that lizard-head uncle, pig-head uncle, and this bald uncle can fight without worry.
Because Yona had boasted proudly with her shoulders squared, it had come to this.
Rubina’s future dream had become to be a healer.
“…It is my fault, it is my fault indeed.”
“Good that you know.”
As they continued walking while bickering, James, who was walking ahead with the map, stopped and called his companions together.
“There should be a small town over that hill. I was thinking we could rest there a bit and then head straight to Capatia.”
“Let’s do that. We need to wash up, and the kid needs a bath too.”
Both Kairoc and Alec nodded at Yona’s words.
Rubina’s cheeks were slightly puffed up, seemingly upset that Yona was vehemently opposing her.
Moreover, as if in protest, she was walking while holding Alec’s hand, which made Yona sigh as she watched.
There’s a reason for this strong opposition.
Although it can only be known on the day of assessment, and before that, there’s the question of whether Rubina has holy power or not, but even so, if she becomes a healer, Rubina seemed ready to plunge into the adventurer’s life at any moment.
Being a healer isn’t all bad.
In terms of growth rate, healers were definitely superior to priests. After all, priests are stuck in churches, receiving education and training among themselves, but such training can’t be as desperate as that of healers who risk their lives in the field.
Moreover, healers were definitely better than priests in terms of using holy power more efficiently.
Priests can’t selectively heal just the injured part.
To put it extremely, even for a scratch from bumping into a rock, priests have to perform a full-body healing, whereas healers can heal it just by touching that part.
So, priests consume holy power much faster than healers.
In other words, healers have superior endurance.
Moreover, party members preferred healers over priests.
Always sticking close and instantly casting healing when something happens, having a healer around was psychologically more reassuring than a priest.
But what good are these advantages?
Priests look down on healers.
For this reason, Yona couldn’t help but try to dissuade Rubina from wanting to become a healer.
“So why do you want to be a healer?”
Alec’s voice was heard.
At those words, Yona also perked up her ears, waiting for Rubina’s answer.
She won’t get emotionally attached, but somehow, she felt she should.
“If I become a healer… like you, sister, I can immediately heal people who are hurt…”
“Hmm.”
It’s an admirable thing to say.
Yona was about to snap at Rubina that priests can do that just as well, but she barely held back at Alec’s eye signal.
“Come on, let’s hurry. We’ll reach Capatia in about three days.”
At James’ shout, Alec swiftly picked up Rubina.
Yona also quickened her pace.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Ludvik. Or should I say, Hero?”
Ludvik was taken aback by the sudden visitor.
Her snow-white hair was brimming with sparkle and shine, and her red lips were strikingly red even without makeup.
Overall, she was very-
‘…Was it Alevian?’
Yes, she looked very much like that fairy.
And she was that level of beauty.
“I’m Ceres Olkamine.”
Looking so similar that one might think they were the same person, she greeted with a smile full of warmth, and Bishop Paleo, standing in between, added an explanation for Ludvik.
“She is also the regent of this Grand Duchy of Capatia, and the chief elder of this Celestial Church Capatia branch.”
“Ah.”
Regent or elder, he didn’t really understand such things.
But Ludvik could be certain of one thing:
A person in a high position – whether or not that was the case, he wasn’t sure, but at any rate, she was an extraordinary person.
“This is Saint Bigrin. The Celestial God personally descended and chose her.”
“Oh my.”
Her eyes curved like crescent moons.
Is this what an unrestrained smile looks like?
Bigrin thought to herself that Ceres seemed like a good person.
“How long has it been? For the Celestial God to personally descend and choose a saint, it’s truly a joyous occasion for the Celestial Church.”
“Although it hasn’t been officially announced yet as she hasn’t been ordained in the Inpula Church Territory… No, no. Please, everyone, sit down. This isn’t a matter to discuss standing.”
Only after Bishop Paleo finished speaking did Ceres sit down on the sofa first.
Although Ceres was of almost the same rank as Bishop Paleo, she had the additional status of being a guest, so only after she sat did Bishop Paleo, Ludvik, and Bigrin all sit on the sofas.
“I thought it would be good for you to meet Elder Olkamine before going to Inpula, so I suggested it.”
A hearty laugh, hehe-, spread through the room.
It had already been almost two weeks since they arrived at this Port Capatia.
Even if they had left right away, it would have taken two weeks to reach Inpula, but unlike Ludvik and Bigrin who thought it would be better to leave as soon as possible, Bishop Paleo had asked them to wait a few more days because there was someone he wanted to introduce them to.
And it seems that person was Ceres Olkamine.
Of course, they hadn’t been waiting idly; they had been going around the cathedral, greeting people, meeting those they needed to meet, and making quite a few connections.
“The Celestial God is truly merciful. How gracious to bestow such great concern even upon us mere creatures, preparing us for the coming disaster. How can we ever repay such grace?”
Bishop Paleo nodded at Ceres’ words.
“Moreover, such a dignified hero, and that tremendous holy power… Indeed, worthy of being called a saint. Saint Bigrin.”
“You, you flatter me.”
Yes – this is it.
Bigrin was very pleased with this regent and elder named Ceres Olkamine.
Always just a second fiddle due to Yona’s shadow, as soon as she left Evian, someone appeared who recognized her true worth.
And even saying she was suitable talent for a saint.
“Come to think of it, it seems Ludvik and Bigrin haven’t been out much since coming to Capatia.”
“That’s right. After all, since both of them haven’t been officially ordained yet, it’s a bit burdensome to make a grand announcement at this point.”
“In that case, hmm-”
Ceres seemed to be thinking about something.
And her thoughts didn’t take long, soon she smiled.
“Then, how about I invite you to my mansion? You’ve come all the way to Port Capatia, you should properly experience a full course of seafood, don’t you think?”
“Oh.”
Seafood.
She must mean fish.
Ludvik might not know, but Bigrin had never eaten seafood before.
Evian is inland so there’s no chance to see fish, and her knowledge of the sea is limited to just knowing that there are creatures that breathe underwater in a place called the ocean.
“However… that is.”
Bishop Paleo looked somewhat troubled.
It wasn’t a bad proposal, and moreover, it wouldn’t look good to refuse an offer from her, the chief elder of the Celestial Church Capatia branch.
But the hero and saint haven’t been officially ordained yet.
That’s why they haven’t even made an announcement.
Bishop Paleo found it difficult to be certain whether it was right to let them go out privately in this situation.
“But if the saint of the Celestial Church has never tasted seafood, wouldn’t that be embarrassing? Along with Capatia’s pride, our wine. What do you think-”
Ceres looked at Bishop Paleo.
Her eyes were full of smiles.
“That’s what I think.”
Bishop Paleo pondered for a moment.
But indeed, it seemed too much to prevent this as well.
Especially since what Ceres said wasn’t wrong.
-Then, in three days. I’ll send a carriage. Please come then.
Ceres left after saying those words.
“Have you ever tasted seafood, Hero?”
While walking in the garden outside their lodgings, Bigrin asked Ludvik.
Marlen is also inland, but since he had left Marlen and come all this way, she thought he might have tried it.
“Of course, I’ve eaten it many times. I’ve even seen a whale as big as the sky.”
“A whale as big as the sky?”
What a joke, I’m not that foolish.
Bigrin frowned as she said this.
But Ludvik’s face was so serious that she began to wonder.
“…Are there really whales that big?”
The ocean is supposed to be incredibly vast, isn’t it?
It might really exist.
Bigrin thought so.
“I’m joking.”
As Ludvik grinned, Bigrin imagined hitting his back with all her might.
