Chapter 37: Virtual World I
On the way, Sheldon seemed upset because no one recognized his Carl Sagan costume.
Mia and Missy were both thrilled—not only had they gotten lots of candy, but they were walking alongside Alex.
Alex was happy too. Even though he didn't care much about the candy itself, simply getting to experience Halloween—something he had always dreamed of—made him smile.
It wasn't until the last house that a lady finally recognized Sheldon's costume, which instantly lifted his spirits.
"I got tons of candy this year!" Missy said cheerfully.
"Now that we've finished trick-or-treating, how about I show you something cool?" Alex offered.
He invited everyone along. Even though Billy could be a bit silly sometimes, Alex saw no reason not to consider him a friend.
"Are you taking us to your lab?" Missy stepped forward, clearly excited.
"Of course! I've got something we could use to have a little fun."
Alex looked around at everyone, waiting for their responses.
"Fine by me," said Tam.
"I want to go," said Mia.
"If it's a game, and it can challenge my intellect, then I'm open to new experiences," said Sheldon.
"Sure," added Billy.
So, Alex led them to his lab, visibly excited.
For some time now, he'd been developing a digital virtual world, where humans could enter through their consciousness.
He was inspired by the anime Sword Art Online, Log Horizon, and the movie Ready Player One.
Alex designed three models:
Fully immersive: the body goes unconscious while the mind enters the game world.
Semi-immersive: the mind enters the game but still maintains control of the body—players can sit and control their character mentally.
Augmented reality model: inspired by Ready Player One, where the player doesn't enter the game directly but uses AR glasses.
This third model relies on other gear to improve gameplay—such as gloves and shoes to help control character movement.
No need for too many details, but it's just as good as the other two.
…
When everyone arrived, Sheldon noticed the door looked different.
Before they could step in, a robotic female voice rang out: [Access granted. Welcome, Mr. Alex.]
Everyone froze for a moment.
Alex turned to them, visibly proud.
"Ana, they're my friends. Disable all security protocols."
[Disabling safety measures. Temporarily granting access to Sheldon Cooper, Melissa Cooper, Mia Thermopolis, Tam Nguyen, and Billy Sparks.]
"Is that… artificial intelligence?" Tam broke the silence.
He knew Alex was smart, but this was beyond what he'd expected.
"What's artificial intelligence?" Missy asked, puzzled.
"Sounds awesome!" Billy chimed in.
Before Alex could respond, Sheldon jumped in: "Artificial intelligence is a computer program that simulates human intellect and can carry out cognitive tasks such as learning, reasoning, problem solving, and decision making."
"In short, AI is a system that can learn and adapt autonomously, just like humans."
Although Sheldon seemed skeptical, part of him was visibly intrigued.
"But is that voice truly AI, or just a voice command?" Tam asked, still doubtful.
Alex smiled confidently. "You can speak with her if you like—her name's Ana."
"Me, me, me—let me go first!" Missy shouted.
She didn't understand everything they were talking about, but it sounded really cool to her.
"Hi Ana! What do you think of my Halloween costume?"
[Missy, your Cyndi Lauper costume suits you beautifully. If I had to rate it from 0 to 10, I'd give it a thousand points.]
Missy was overjoyed with the compliment.
Alex, silently observing, felt a gentle tug on his shirt. When he looked, it was Mia.
"Alex, can I talk to her too?"
"Of course, Mia—you're my friend. Don't be shy. Ana's super kind."
[Yes, Mia. No need to be afraid—you can even call me your big sister if you'd like.]
"Wow, she talked even without being asked a question," Tam said, surprised.
He still couldn't believe Alex had created actual AI.
"This proves she can understand everything we say. Ana, what do you think of Mia's Snow White costume?" Alex asked.
[Sir, Mia is a true princess—just as beautiful and radiant as Snow White herself.]
[My recommendation: you should marry her. She'll grow up to be a stunning woman.]
Mia blushed at Ana's comment—she hadn't expected such a bold response. She lowered her gaze and glanced at Alex from the corner of her eyes.
Alex turned red too. He knew that Mia would one day grow into a goddess-like beauty, but even if they became a couple, he couldn't be with her—not in that way.
"Ana, enough nonsense. Did you finish what I asked?"
[Yes, sir. Ana completed the task perfectly.]
"Then open the door quickly—we're coming in."
As soon as Alex spoke, Ana opened the lab door.
But the light pouring out was so bright that nobody could see anything inside.
Alex turned back to the group.
"Try not to be too shocked by what you're about to see."
With that, he walked in first.

Chapter 36: Halloween has been rewritten.
I'm not sure if these two chapters turned out well. Creating the interaction between Mia and Miissy is complicated, but I did my best.
I hope I can improve in that aspect. Have you watched the anime and movies I mentioned in this chapter?
That's all. See you next time!
