Chapter 397: Velmora: Spirit of the Eternal Darkness
Lisa, Rubina, and the rest were not doing much better.
Lisa and Ren were doing their best to hold back the demons. Both Silis and Terra would come out from time to time from underground, dragging some of them down into the depths of the ground.
There was no real counter for two large creatures.
For one, one of them was a real dragon—just what the demons came here to hunt.
Their only problem was that it was an Earthen Sovereign, not the darkness creature they were meant to fight.
Their tactics for defeating a darknesses elemental creature weren't going to work. What was worse, the fog suddenly disappeared—their cover was gone.
But not all was lost for the demons.
They were still able to use their mutating stones, and they had already gathered most of the energy needed to power themselves.
As for the humans, there were not many.
Lisa fought back fiercely. She used both buckler and spear to bash and stab at demons, the tip of her blade already showing the element she was attuned to.
Holy Nova was laced with each stab and slash.
The disappearing fog was actually helping her; she was now able to go all out, along with Ren, who was also a light-elemental user.
His golden blade cut demons apart, though they were using their mutation to heal themselves just as fast as he was cutting them.
"Damn it! Only the two largest monsters are doing actual damage here…" The samurai hero called out.
Elarion the unicorn was like them being tied down by a few demons.
He could only kick them around—his horn had been smashed during one of the encounters.
No one was safe here, whether for a demon or a member of Logan's team. Both sides were fighting to the end.
Rubina was busy keeping her father from harm.
She and Chloe were managing a group of three.
Chloe had created a barrier of spikes to keep the earl safe, while Rubina spread flames with both hands.
The demons smirked at her actions, their shields holding up pretty well against her flames, even managing to suck the mana from her in the process.
What they did not take into account was that Uriel would pluck them up into the air.
The large flaming phoenix dived down and brought them high above.
His goal was simple: he was making a show, one he hoped Zephyr, Drakhel, Wyver, and Stormwing would see from near the sea.
Even Logan was able to see Uriel using its body like a torch, rising nearly one hundred meters into the sky.
Soon, figures in the distance began to approach.
From where Logan stood atop the plateau, he could see them like black dots at first, the fast to reach them was Zephyr who left green streaks on the sky as it flew.
He wanted to hurry the egg and join the fight, but something else was happening in front of him.
All the miasma surrounding the island suddenly swirled together, forming a massive tornado-like column. The black cloud didn't produce wind, but he could feel the darkness element concentrating in the center of the phenomenon.
Suddenly, he heard a great voice call out.
[You finally show yourself, come… just on time.]
A genderless voice echoed, one that immediately radiated power.
"Darkness spirit?" Logan asked. He wasn't sure what to call it, but he knew the egg in front of him was close to hatching.
[Darkness? I am more than just that. I am all you know me as—and even more. All spirits are; they just choose to show one form.
Now then, you may simply call me Velmora, ruler of darkness. Before we begin speaking, you need to deal with those who invaded my domain. That is your first task. They are about to bring in a general. Deal with that, and we will have time to speak before I toss you off my domain that is...]
Logan presented the egg in front of him as if asking the spirit what to do with it.
[…The little one… should have been born already. Has it grown too lazy after you fed it so many crystals?]
"How do you know…" Logan tried to ask, but the spirit cut him off.
[We spirits are the ones providing the power you are taking for those crystals, don't think we will keep doing so endlessly.]
Having finished absorbing all the darkness around, the spirit took on a hazy form with no clear shape, just like the light spirits.
However, it did form a humanoid arm that extended outward from the haze and tapped twice on the egg.
With a crack, the egg broke in half, and the creature inside the egg was revealed.
"Kid, you should have exited this cage long ago. Now, hurry and get marked. I grow tired of my land being used as a plaything for both demons and you humans. I cultivated these creatures and helped raise them. I am only allowing you to take those that have been mutated—not my best. And unlike the other elementals, I do not create spawns."
The spirit then made the dragon within the egg float up to Logan.
"Now mark it—and get those invaders off my land."
The voice carried such killing intent that Logan gulped. He knew that, even with all the power he had, he would not be able to defeat such a being.
The little dragon being pushed toward him was small, nearly half of Logan's height. He was a little over 185 now, certainly taller than he would have been back on Earth.
The creature looked cute and even harmless, but Logan knew that would soon change. It had eaten far too many mana crystals to keep such an innocent look.
Logan thought it was a shame. Like anyone else, he loved looking at small, cute things. That was the reason he wasn't rushing to train Nix—the little fox was hiding somewhere, hopefully safe.
As for the small dragon, it flailed about as if not wanting to be tamed. It seemed to know what the process entailed.
[Don't worry about the young-looking one. It is just trying to evade its responsibilities. I had to send it back to its egg. Don't be fooled—it is about four thousand-something years old.]
Logan looked back at the creature and shook his head.
"Four-thousand...? You almost tricked me, huh… Guess we need to make you look like your old self again, then."
