Chapter 9: CHAPTER 9
Scores To Settle
"I apologize for my statements. Perhaps I overreacted.
I should not have made an incorrect assumption about Mary.
I mean, she is just a harmless girl trying to survive, and I trust you as well." Romeo apologised once again for stepping on his brother's toes.
In everything he said, he was careful enough not to reveal the one-night stand he had with Mary.
"This is undoubtedly what I am talking about. I am overjoyed that you have finally acknowledged your mistakes." Hilton applauded his efforts to accept his mistake.
"Do not get it twisted, bro. I just want to make sure my brother is not making the biggest mistake of his life." Romeo clarified.
He also talked about how their father, Antonio, got married to their mother sympathizing after she got pregnant out of wedlock.
. Antonio's parents could not bear the shame of their only son having an unmarried child. That is why they approved his marriage to Martha, the mother of Hilton and Romeo.
Unfortunately, Antonio and Martha
eventually fell in love with each other.
To date, Antonio believes that marrying Martha was the best decision he ever made, and he has no regrets.
"I am already familiar with the story. Dad told us a thousand times already." Hilton said.
He also warned Romeo never to compare Mary to their late mother.
He believes that their late mother is a thousand times better than Mary.
"You have said a lot but have not hit the target. You have been shooting blanks," Romeo said, bringing up the point of contention.
"And what is the objective? I cannot seem to understand you," said Hilton. He was already sick of the conversation and wanted to stop.
"Why did you marry Mary while ignoring all of your beautiful ex-girlfriends? Did Dad force you to do this?" Romeo pressed further for a response.
He has a feeling that Hilton might be hiding the truth, and he's willing to find out soon.
"Take it easy, bro. I never said Dad was to blame for this." Hilton cleared the air to exempt his Father's name from the suspect list.
"That is not how it occurred. It is a lengthy story. You must remain calm while I reveal everything to you."
Hilton urged.
He was ready to satisfy Romeo's curiosity. He knows that Romeo will stop at nothing to find out the truth.
"So apparently, the company was robbed a few weeks ago." Hilton provided an insight and paused a bit.
"Robbed?" Romeo screamed and covered his mouth when he realized he was in a public area.
"Could you please stop screaming and let me speak? Stop acting dramatic. We are in a public location. They might hear you," Hilton warned him.
"I apologize for doing so. I am just surprised to learn about the robbery."
He apologised to Hilton. Although he was still in denial that the company had been robbed.
.
"Why am I only learning about this now? I am still a member of this family, even though I have not been around for a while." He lamented. He hated the fact that no one told him.
"I am glad you admitted that you have been away from the family. We didn't mean to bother you with the stolen equipment, so we kept it away from everyone." Hilton justified his actions.
He was the same person who prevented his Father from informing Romeo about the robbery incident.
"Cut that crap, bro," Romeo snapped.
" I may not be on the board of directors, but I deserve to be kept up to date on the activities of my father's company." He demanded.
"Besides, what did Dad do about the stolen equipment? Were they able to apprehend the person responsible?"
He asked further. He wasn't bothered if the conversation would take the whole day.
"That is precisely where I was headed before you interrupted me." Hilton frowned.
"Remember Alejandro, the company's security guard?" Hilton restarted the conversation.
"Yes, I do.
He's Dad's long-serving security guard. I met him during my last visit to the company. What about him, though?" Romeo asked.
He also made an additional assumption that Alejandro masterminded the robbery.
"No. He was on duty when the company was robbed." Hilton quickly debunked.
"Rather than send him to jail for negligence, Dad ordered that his daughter, Mary, marry me."
Hilton finally revealed after dragging his words for too long.
"That is impossible," Romeo screamed.
"What does this have to do with you?"
He could not believe it.
"I asked my father the same thing.
I assumed you were the one getting married to her until Dad made it clear to me. I am still in disbelief. I have yet to recover from this trauma. The nightmare continues to play in my head."
"There is no way I will marry someone like her. I am not interested in broke girls. They are gold diggers," Romeo said, pretending he was not interested in Mary, so Hilton would not suspect anything.
"Do you see what I am saying? Why am I forced to pay for the sins of others?
How do I cope with that never-ending torment of marriage?" Hilton sighed and rolled his eyes.
The circumstances appear to be weighing him down.
He is gradually turning into a shadow of himself. He has not been thinking in the right direction recently.
"I still find it difficult to believe you let Dad force you into something you strongly oppose. Do you have feelings for her? Be sincere with me." Romeo asked Hilton like a private investigator.
"Even if she casts a love spell on me, I will still not love her." Hilton was quick to rebuke Mary as though she were cursed.
He would rather take a bullet than love someone like her. She may appear beautiful, but she does not fascinate him in the least.
"Having listened to all of these you just said, then why did you kiss her on the cheek?" Romeo asked again.
He was never bored with the conversation.
"The peck had been staged. I did it to prevent you from suspecting anything. That is something I have never done before." He defended himself and even spat on the ground to demonstrate his seriousness.
" I believe you now,"
Romeo concurred. His ears have heard enough already. He wasn't sure if he wanted to ever continue having the conversation with Hilton.
"What I am about to say may sound amusing and irritating to you. Believe me, after this, you might want to hate Dad." Hilton started another topic just when Romeo thought he was done.
"Bring it on! Dad has done worse things in the past, but I still supported him. Why would I hate him now?" Romeo bragged as he looked set to hear the next bombshell.
