Chapter 70 - I
The sound of Qin Lingyun’s voice drew some attention, with people sizing up Qin Yizhi.
The Qin family had three main factions: one led by Qin Yizhi, one led by Qin Lingyun, and another headed by the old master Qin.
Qin Lingyun took the initiative to create trouble, and some of Qin Yizhi’s supporters murmured behind him, “Isn’t it because of people like you that he didn’t come? It wasn’t even your father; why are you making trouble!”
Qin Lingyun, upon hearing this, turned back and glared at the speakers. They smiled indifferently and seemed unafraid of him.
Qin Lingyun’s expression turned gloomy for a moment before he resumed his smile and stared straight at them.
Qin Yizhi’s voice was faint as he said, “Don’t worry about it. I will do what needs to be done.”
Qin Lingyun chuckled, “I hope so.”
He glanced at Xie Qi beside Qin Yizhi and said, “Brother Yizhi, when did your taste become the same as those uncles who are always looking for students? You’re getting older too.”
Qin Yizhi replied coldly, “Are you finished? When you are, move aside and don’t block the door.”
Although the door was very spacious and even a few more people standing in the doorway wouldn’t block it, Qin Yizhi’s words were clearly meant to show his impatience with Qin Lingyun.
With people watching, Qin Lingyun couldn’t taunt Qin Yizhi further and had to remain silent. As people entered, one of Qin Lingyun’s cousins came over and said, “How come he’s still so calm? It’s just a title of the legitimate eldest grandson, right? It’s a new China now. We don’t care about that sort of thing anymore.”
“Yes,” another cousin chimed in, “even if it were still the old ways, it wouldn’t be his turn. I heard from my mom that he has some issues, and grandpa isn’t very happy with him.”
Qin Lingyun, impatient, said, “Don’t be so secretive. Just tell us directly.”
The cousin replied, “I don’t dare to say. My mom told me not to say anything. Grandpa has sealed it.”
Qin Lingyun’s expression darkened instantly. “You arouse my interest and then tell me you don’t dare to say? Are you playing with me?”
Qin Lingyun’s temperament was known to be quite volatile. Those who followed him were aware that he could be very amiable at times but was more often quick to anger.
The cousin, with a bitter face, said, “I really can’t say… eh, Brother Lingyun, don’t go. I’ll tell you, but don’t tell others.”
Qin Lingyun then stopped and looked down at him. “Speak quickly.”
The cousin said, “Actually, it’s like this. There are rumours that the death of the eldest uncle was related to Qin Yizhi, as if Qin Yizhi was responsible for the eldest uncle’s death. This matter is believed to be true. The old master sealed it at the time. Many people know but don’t dare to mention it.”
“What? If this were the case, Qin Yizhi should be in jail. How can he remain so calm?”
“Jail might not be the case. Anyway, it was said to be an accident at the time. Only Qin Yizhi knows whether it was truly an accident,” the cousin paused, “but I think Qin Yizhi is cold-hearted and ruthless, so it might be accurate.”
Qin Lingyun listened with a sombre face. “With things like this, grandfather can still make him the heir. What a joke.”
He quickly thought of something, and the corners of his lips lifted. “It doesn’t matter. Anyway, I’ll be better than him, more impressive. The Qin clan only needs a leader who can make it shine forever. Qin Yizhi has been completely out of touch with the Qin family for more than a year; he’s been thoroughly ruined.”
After saying this, Qin Lingyun left with a satisfied expression.
This left two teenagers behind, muttering, “How can he be so confident? Grandpa gave most of the power to Qin Yizhi. I think Grandpa might still favour Qin Yizhi.”
“Don’t talk nonsense. Qin Yizhi has been back for so long, and grandfather hasn’t seen him until now. But Qin Yizhi is indeed iron-willed; if grandfather didn’t call him, he wouldn’t have known to come back.”
“I just feel that although Grandpa doesn’t like Qin Yizhi much before, he still put the power in his hands quite quickly.”
“But Grandpa’s giving the power to Lingyun just as fast, though.”
“It’s different. I don’t really understand, but I feel it’s different. Lingyun is too proud. Isn’t there a saying that a proud soldier will be defeated?”
“Stop talking nonsense. Why are you always belittling Brother Lingyun? Do you want to be a traitor, huh? I warn you, we’re all on the same boat as Brother Lingyun. We can only be good if he’s good.”
“There’s nothing I can do about it. Actually, I’m more optimistic about Qin Yizhi. Lingyun’s character is too unstable and a bit too impatient, but my parents support Lingyun, so I can’t do anything about it.”
The teenagers’ mutterings did not spread further.
In fact, many of the Qin family’s younger members were forced into this hierarchy, and differing supporters of the family’s factions often led to disagreements and conflicts.
Qin Lingyun was indeed in a good mood now, while Qin Yizhi and his supporters remained very low-key.
Xie Qi felt that the atmosphere in the Qin family was indeed very serious. He scanned the crowd and noticed that almost no one was pleasant to look at, except for the child who had grown fat during puberty and supported large features. Everyone else seemed to be of the “dragon and phoenix” variety.
Despite this, Qin Yizhi’s appearance was the most outstanding among them.
Some people came over to talk to Qin Yizhi, and he conversed with them calmly, occasionally introducing Xie Qi to others. Xie Qi also smiled pleasantly and friendly.
After a while, the sound in the hall suddenly fell silent. All eyes turned toward the door, where an elderly man walked in amidst the crowd.
Xie Qi suppressed his voice and asked Qin Yizhi in a breathy tone, “Is that your grandfather?”
Qin Yizhi softly replied, “Hmm.”
Xie Qi asked, “Is he really 80 years old? He looks like he’s in his early sixties.”
Qin Yizhi answered, “Uh-huh.”
Xie Qi thought to himself that rich people must have some secret to eternal youth. However, considering the degree of feudalism in the Qin family… Xie Qi asked with curiosity, “He doesn’t indulge in boys and girls, does he?”
Qin Yizhi: “…”
Qin Yizhi glanced at Xie Qi, as if trying to figure out what was going on in his head, but his expression remained cold as he replied, “No, this is a rule-of-law society now.”
Xie Qi replied, “Oh.”
