Chapter 62: chapter 7
Elsewhere, Stoick and Gobber were flying in search of the two young Night Furies.
"Boar-headed! The both of them! Just like Hiccup's mother! She could never stay put either." The chief complained as he and the blacksmith flew over the icy waters below.
"Ah, they're just twenty. And dragons for that matter. I mean, could there be a worse combination? Ha! When I think of how stubborn and senseless YOU were back in the day…well, not much has changed, actually." Gobber said as he tapped his chin in thought.
Stoick groaned and ran a hand down his face. "You know what they're like. They won't give up, Gobber. And if Hiccup and Kala find Drago, before we find them…"
"Bah! NOTHING can hurt Hiccup and Kala. They're Night Furies!" Gobber stated confidently.
Stoick took notice of something floating in the waters below and he signaled to Gobber as he steered Skullcrusher to land. Gobber landed just a few seconds later as Stoick dismounts his Rumblehorn and grabs the item that caught his attention.
It was Hiccup's flight helmet.
The chief then made his way back to his dragon and held the helmet up to him.
"Find them, Skullcrusher. Find them." Stoick said, a bit of desperation in his words.
The Rumblehorn sniffed at the helmet and roared once he picked up the scent.

As the woman rushed through the maze of caves and rocks, Kala and I struggled to keep up with her.
"Hold on! Wait just a minute!" I yelled as I tried to climb over a large ledge without resorting to using my wings.
Kala took notice of this and helped me up. I smiled appreciatively at her as she climbed up right after, then we rushed to catch up with the woman once more.
"This way." She ushered before running off once more.
"Come back here!" I growled out in annoyance.
She looked back at Kala and I every once and a while as we chased her through the caves.
"Come." She said, gesturing for us to follow her yet again, which got me to growl once more.
"You can't just say something like that and run off! You're my MOTHER ?! I mean, what the–do you know how INSANE it sounds?!" I shouted angrily.
"Come. Quickly!" She urged again.
" This woman is starting to get on my nerves ." Kala growled out and I nodded in agreement.
"I need answers! If you're really my mother, why in Odin's name did you never come back?! And if what you say is true, then what have you been doing this entire time?!" I asked, trying the best I could to keep my scales from appearing and my eyes changing as I did so.
The woman then disappeared from sight and Kala and I sped up in our attempt to catch up to her. A couple seconds later, we emerged through an opening that led into what seemed to be a large nest. Hordes of dragons of various species flew about as we looked around the place in pure awe.
" I've never seen a nest like this before.. " Kala breathed out, her pupils fully dilated in curiosity.
The both of us looked up as we heard the Stormcutter move and saw that the woman was with him as he hung from the cave roof.
"How long have you been here?" I asked, my anger forgotten for the time being.
"Twenty years." The woman said calmly.
"And this entire time you're been rescuing dragons?" I questioned with a raised brow, my arms crossing as I did so.
The woman nodded then gained a nervous look upon her face. "You're not upset?"
"Yeah, I am a bit upset. Not everyday you find out your supposed mother is some kind of crazy, feral, vigilante dragon lady." I retorted rather upset again, my eyes narrowing at the woman.
"At least I'm not boring…right?" She asked.
I sighed and rubbed my temples. "I suppose there is that…"
"Do you like it?"
Kala and I exchanged a glance for a split second.
"It is definitely an impressive nest." I said, but my attention was taken away from the woman when my mate screeched in annoyance.
I stifled a laugh when I saw that there were dragons who were scattering from her. Kala huffed and made her way back to my side.
" Do these dragons not know what personal space is? " I heard her mumble out.
I smiled and scratched the top of her head, which got her to lean into the touch and purr from the attention like always. The woman then came down from the cave roof and cautiously made her way over to Kala and I, reaching out towards my mate.
"Can I..?" She asked.
I looked at Kala and she gave a slight nod, then I looked back at the woman and nodded just enough for her to see. She smiled and began to look over Kala once I was a couple steps back.
"She's beautiful! Incredible! And she might very well be the last of her kind." She began, Kala and I becoming a bit nervous when she mentioned that Kala may be the last Night Fury, which wasn't too far off from the truth. "And look, she's your age! No wonder you get along so well."
The woman then opened Kala's mouth and was in awe to see that her teeth were hidden within her gums. "And retractable teeth! How did you manage to tame her?"
"Oh, I found her in the woods five years ago. She was shot down during a raid and was wounded, so I helped her fly again." I explained, not feeling comfortable with explaining what truly happened that fateful day.
She gained a solemn look as she backed away from my mate and went up to a small group of injured dragons.
"This Snafflefang lost his leg to one of Drago Bludvist's iron traps. This Raincutter had her wing sliced by razor netting. And poor Gruff was blinded by a tree snare…then left to die alone and scared." She explained as she showed us the injury on each dragon.
"And what of this? Did Drago or his trappers do this, too?" She asked as she lifted Kala's prosthetic with her staff as she did to the Raincutter's wing.
That crossed the line and made me growl. "You have no right to know how she lost her tailfin. Hel, you don't have the right to know how she and I became so close. We don't even know who you are and you're asking questions on very personal subjects. Don't you dare talk to me as though you have been part of my life for years, because you weren't."
Kala crooned at me to get my attention and I huffed, giving her a quick pet before storming off.

I watched my mate as he walked off and released a heavy breath.
'He just needs time to calm himself. Yeah. He'll be okay.'
My attention was then broken when I saw that the woman was going to go after him, but I put a stop to that as I stepped in front of her with a glare.
"Step aside Kala dear. I need to go check on him." She said gently.
I huffed out steam, my glare hardening as I did. If she wouldn't take the hint the first time, then there was no other option.
With my mind set, I transformed into my human form and crossed my arms. The woman froze in place with wide eyes, her grip on her staff giving way resulting in it falling to the nest floor.
"You will not be going after my boyfriend. We just met you not too long ago, and might I say that it was not a very good first impression on your part. So, I suggest that you give him the time and space that he is wanting so that he can wrap his head around everything and figure out what to do with the information you have provided us." I growled out, some scales appearing around my eyes in the process.
"H-how are you able to become a human?! This is beyond natural, even for dragons!" The woman exclaimed out of pure shock.
I sighed, 'I should have thought this through. Of course she would freak out at seeing you transform. You and Hiccup are the first Night Furies she most likely has come across.' I berated myself mentally before taking a deep breath and putting my full attention back on the woman as my scales faded back into my skin.
"I'll explain, if you will be willing to explain to me your situation. Because we both have a lot to talk about. Especially when it comes to Hiccup. His reaction was quite valid in what you told us. It is a very big claim to make considering the circumstances."
"O-oh..o-of course. I should have known that he would react in such a way. I mean who wouldn't after growing up motherless?" She said nervously as she picked up her staff. "You have a point, let's talk."
I glared slightly. "So, me or you first?"
"I really am Hiccup's mother."
"We have no way of knowing that is true. With that being said, I want to see if it is the truth. I have trusted you with my truth, now I expect to earn the same from you."
The woman sighed and nodded with a sad smile. "I understand." She looked at me as her expression changed to one of skepticism. "And what about you?"
"Without divulging thousands of winters of history, Night Furies possess a certain trait that allows them to blend in with the human species for protection. How exactly can you prove that you are Hiccup's parent?"
"Hmm, you are quite a relentless one. But ask me anything about Berk. It is as familiar as the back of my hand." She said with a sad air about her. "You mentioned earlier that Hiccup was your boyfriend. How did his father take to that?"
I rubbed my arm slightly as I looked to the side. "He didn't take it all that well. But then…he changed. They all did. Pretty soon everyone back at Berk had dragons of their own."
"Is everyone courting their dragons?" She asked, a bit shocked.
I smiled as I kept myself from giggling. "No, it is just Hiccup and I."
"Oh, if only it were possible." She said dejectedly as she began to make her way back over to the Stormcutter.
"No, really, we–"
"Believe me, I tried, as well. But people are not capable of change, dear. Some of us…were just born different."
"If you do not mind me asking, what happened?" I asked cautiously.
She sighed and stopped in her attempt to mount the Stormcutter then she turned back to face me.
"Berk was a land of kill or be killed, but I believed peace was possible. It was a very unpopular opinion. One night, a dragon broke into my family's hut, finding Hiccup in the cradle. I rushed to protect him, but what I saw…was proof of everything I believed." She said as she rubbed the Stormcutter's snout gently. "This wasn't a vicious beast, but an intelligent, gentle creature, whose soul reflected my own. Hiccup and Stoick nearly died that night, all because I couldn't kill a dragon."
I smiled softly as I put a hand on my hip. "Yeah, well it runs in the family."
"It broke my heart to stay away, but I believed he'd be safer if I did." She sighed out.
"How did you survive?"
"Oh, Cloudjumper never meant to harm me." The woman assured as the Stormcutter, who I now knew as Cloudjumper, nudged her sweetly. "He must've thought I belonged here…In the home of the great Bewilderbeast!"
I raised a brow in confusion, which she took notice of and smiled. She grabbed my hand and led me further into the nest to an area that had a large pool of water that seemed to lead right out into the icy ocean. Lying within the water was an enormous white dragon that was sleeping soundly. Smaller dragons flew past and bowed at the white one respectfully before taking off once more.
I couldn't stop myself from looking on in awe.
"This is the Bewilderbeast. The Alpha species. One of very few that still exists. Every nest has its queen, as I am sure you know, but this is the king of all dragons." She explained. "With his icy breath, this graceful giant built our nest. A safe haven for dragons everywhere."
"Wait, that's the ice-spitter?" I asked as I gestured to the Bewilderbeast below us. " He's responsible for all the destruction?"
"He protects us. We all live under his care. And his command. All but the babies, of course…who listen to no one!" She laughed out.
Some baby dragons then flew past us and landed on the Bewilderbeast, who was awoken by their chaotic playing. He gently blew them off his horns, then turned to face the woman and I.
"I've lived among them for twenty years, Kala, learning your ways, discovering the secrets of other species…You are the first Night Fury I have come across in all those years."
The Bewilderbeast blew a puff of snow gently atop my hair. I stifled a laugh and shook out the snow with a smile.
"He likes you." She said with a laugh.
"Thank you for welcoming me." I thanked with a bow.
The Bewilderbeast nodded at me. " You will be safe here young one. "
The woman's eyes widened a bit as she looked at me. "You must be hungry."
"Um, yeah, I suppose I could eat." I agreed.
"Good. It's feeding time." She said with a smile, then she led me away.
