104. The Backstab of Justice
After breakfast, Ling Ning brought Zhou Xiaoxiao to a parking lot near the café.
Zhou Xiaoxiao was curious as to why Ling Ning had brought her here, but her curiosity turned into surprise when she saw Ling Ning approach a sleek, aggressive-looking black luxury sports car, pull a set of keys out of her pocket, and quietly unlock the door.
Indeed, the car belonged to Qin Qing. This “Sombra” was the latest model from Overwatch Corporation—a luxury sports car with elegant lines, top-notch specs, and even some hidden features like cloaking, teleportation, and autopilot. It was said to have some secret, unpublicized technologies, but Salty Fish wouldn’t go into all the details here. Suffice to say, this was one impressive car.
Ling Ning had found the car keys while staying at Qin Qing’s house, and her hands itched to try it out. After some thought, she called Qin Qing.
Initially, Qin Qing was absolutely against letting Ling Ning drive it. She wasn’t worried about the car; rather, she feared for Ling Ning’s safety—after all, Ling Ning was still underage and didn’t have a driver’s license.
But after a lot of convincing and explaining her reasons for needing it, Qin Qing finally relented, with repeated instructions that Ling Ning should use autopilot.
“You can drive?” Zhou Xiaoxiao asked, incredulous.
“Well, kinda~ I’ve got the basics down,” Ling Ning replied with a cheerful grin.
Zhou Xiaoxiao still had her doubts, but after some thought, she got in the car. She couldn’t imagine Ling Ning risking both their lives for a stunt… could she?
As the car smoothly drove onto the highway, Zhou Xiaoxiao finally let out a sigh of relief. It seemed Ling Ning’s driving skills weren’t just picked up from playing racing games.
In fact, Ling Ning had been itching to speed, but the traffic conditions didn’t allow it. Driving such a high-caliber car so slowly felt like an insult to the machine. Honestly, if a sports car couldn’t actually run, could it even still be called a sports car?
“Oh, by the way, Ling Ning, how did you learn to drive?” Zhou Xiaoxiao asked, her curiosity piqued. She remembered that Ling Ning had led a pretty tough life before—where would she have learned to drive?
Ling Ning smiled, half-seriously, half-jokingly. “Need for Speed, obviously. I’m pretty good at it—at least five times out of ten, I won’t crash. Trust me, our luck shouldn’t be that bad today~” In truth, Ling Ning had gotten her license in her previous life and was a competent driver. At least, she had never had an accident.
Hearing Ling Ning’s explanation, Zhou Xiaoxiao couldn’t help but feel a fresh wave of worry about her safety.
“What did you prepare as a gift for my parents?” Zhou Xiaoxiao asked. She’d heard Ling Ning say she had already prepared gifts but didn’t know what exactly.
“I checked the notes you gave me. Your dad likes to drink, so I got a bottle of red wine from Old Yharnam.”
“As for your mom, she loves cooking, so I brought some specialty spices from Totsuki Academy and some red and blue flower teas from the Edge Town. They’re said to be great for skin care. I’m sure your mom will love them.”
Ling Ning had found these things while helping Qin Qing clean up. Of course, she had called to confirm if it was okay to take them, and Qin Qing had said she was planning to throw them out anyway, so Ling Ning was free to have them.
As for the wine, it had been a gift from Qin Qing before she left the country, and Ling Ning had never gotten around to drinking it. Now she figured it was the perfect opportunity to do a favor for a friend.
“How about it? Pretty good gifts, right?” Ling Ning said confidently.
Zhou Xiaoxiao gave Ling Ning a long look, then nodded silently.
The car drove smoothly to their destination—a luxurious villa community. Zhou Xiaoxiao’s parents lived here. Seeing the beautiful scenery and opulent villas, Ling Ning couldn’t help but think that owning a house like this in S City, where land was worth its weight in gold, meant Zhou Xiaoxiao’s family must be filthy rich.
From the notes Zhou Xiaoxiao gave her, Ling Ning learned that her family was originally a large landowner—if they lacked anything, it certainly wasn’t property. Whenever the government needed land for a project or redevelopment, they’d compensate her family, either with huge sums of money or with houses. That was why they had amassed over a hundred properties.
Renting out all those properties brought in an incredible amount of monthly income.
After parking the car, Ling Ning took a moment to straighten her clothes. Once she was satisfied, she picked up the gifts and got out of the car with Zhou Xiaoxiao.
“You remember everything in that notebook, right?” Zhou Xiaoxiao asked one last time before entering. She still felt a bit uneasy.
“Relax. I even know how many boyfriends your dad had before meeting your mom.” Ling Ning waved dismissively, clearly confident. She had memorized the information in that notebook inside out.
Seeing Ling Ning’s assured demeanor, Zhou Xiaoxiao took a deep breath, then slowly opened the door.
Ling Ning curiously took in the decorations around her. Everything exuded a sense of understated luxury. Clearly, the owners of the house had impeccable taste.
Following Zhou Xiaoxiao into the living room, Ling Ning saw three people seated there: Zhou Xiaoxiao’s father Zhou Jingshan, her mother Jiang Yuan, and her fiancé Qian Xu. Since Ling Ning had already seen their photos, she recognized them instantly.
Sensing that someone had arrived, a few pairs of eyes simultaneously turned to look at Ling Ning.
“Are you Xiaoxiao’s boyfriend?” Zhou Jingshan asked, his brow furrowing imperceptibly. The slender build, the delicate and somewhat effeminate face, and the rather flamboyant tone—this kid looked like a pretty boy. While many young girls liked this type, Zhou Jingshan certainly wasn’t one of them.
Ling Ning walked forward calmly and offered a slight smile. “Hello, Uncle, Auntie. I’m Xiaoxiao’s boyfriend, Ling Ling—Ling as in ‘soaring,’ and Ling as in ‘plume.’ Ling Ling.”
“For our first meeting, I wasn’t sure what to bring as a gift, but Xiaoxiao mentioned that you, Uncle, are fond of wine. So, I managed to get a bottle of red wine from the Yharnam Iosefka Estate. I hope you like it.”
“These are specialty spices from Totsuki Academy and some red and blue flower teas from Edge Town, known for their beauty-enhancing properties. I hope Auntie will like them.”
Qian Xu eyed the gifts, raising an eyebrow. It seemed Xiaoxiao’s boyfriend had come fully prepared. This wouldn’t be easy.
Zhou Jingshan had originally planned to reject the gifts, but when he heard that the wine was from the Iosefka Estate in Old Yharnam, he couldn’t hide his surprise. This was something money couldn’t easily buy. He had once tasted wine from that estate by chance and had never been able to forget its unique flavor.
Jiang Yuan was equally impressed. The specialty spices from Totsuki Academy were a significant draw for someone passionate about cooking, and the beauty-enhancing flower teas were an irresistible gift for a woman who loved taking care of her appearance.
Although their first impression of Ling Ning wasn’t particularly good, the gifts had certainly made a strong impact.
“Have a seat,” Zhou Jingshan said, his tone neutral.
Hearing this, Ling Ning knew that she had passed the first hurdle. She naturally reached out and took Zhou Xiaoxiao’s hand, sitting down beside her.
This action did not escape the notice of Zhou Jingshan and Jiang Yuan. As parents, they knew well how much their daughter disliked physical contact—she even brushed off her father’s hand-holding attempts. Yet here she was, holding hands with this “boyfriend” without any sign of displeasure, even with a hint of sweetness in her expression.
“Where and when did you meet Xiaoxiao?” Zhou Jingshan asked.
“Xiaoxiao and I met about six months ago. I remember it was at dusk. I was passing by an alley when I heard someone calling for help. When I went in, I found Xiaoxiao surrounded by some thugs. And, well, just like the classic ‘hero saves the damsel’ cliché, we met that way.” Ling Ning’s gaze turned distant, as though reminiscing.
Zhou Xiaoxiao almost choked on her own breath. Wasn’t that her parents’ love story? Was it really okay to just reuse it like this?
“With that scrawny build of yours, I’d say even one thug could probably handle you, let alone a group,” Qian Xu said scornfully, giving Ling Ning a dismissive glance.
“Sometimes, a just backstab is far more effective than facing them head-on,” Ling Ning replied coolly.
